Long-overdue honors for Charlton native, Vietnam veteran John Kasko
BALLSTON SPA — Like many Vietnam veterans, Charlton native John Kasko didn’t receive the accolades that veterans of earlier eras did when he returned home from his year-long tour of duty.
Successful company commanders share many similar traits. I'll cover a few of the more common traits below:
#1 Confident
A leader must act confident. As an officer, soldiers expect their leaders to remain calm, cool, collected and confident. If you worry, your soldiers will worry. If you are confident, your soldiers will be confident.
#2 Technically Proficient
As the leader of the team, you must be technically proficient. In other words, you must be thoroughly trained on individual and collective tasks. You must be able to perform any task your soldiers do; especially the common warrior tasks.
#3 Decision Maker
Leaders get paid to make decisions. Anyone can make a decision, but company commanders must be willing to make the tough decisions.
#4 Big Picture Thinking
Company Commanders must understand the big picture. They must understand how the unit objectives intertwine with the battalion's objectives. They must be able to see the trees from the forest.
#5 Loyalty to Subordinate Officers and NCOs
As the leader of a company, the commander must have his follower's back. He or she must stand by their NCOs and Officers. Yes, the commander should be loyal to her soldiers too, but the commander leads the NCOs and Officers. The NCOs and Officers lead the soldiers.
#6 Inspire
Soldiers want to be inspired. As a leader, you should have the ability to improve the morale of the organization. You inspire others by setting a strong personal example, enforcing the standards and by recognizing soldiers who do great work.
#7 Ability to Get Things Done
Good commanders produce. Their unit's produce. Successful commanders must get things done. Their unit must accomplish all missions on time and to standard. Commanders don't make excuses, they make things happen.
#8 Delegate
You can't do it all. You just need to make sure things get done. Empower your subordinate leaders and give them the resources they need to succeed. Achieve results through other people.
#9 Team Player
Good commanders are team players. They do whatever they can to help their battalion, their fellow company commanders and most importantly, their officers, NCOs and Soldiers. The Army is a team game. Good commanders understand this and do whatever they can to help the team.
#10 Mission Planning
One of the primary responsibilities of a company commander is mission planning. Good commanders plan, resource and supervise all training. They write Operation Orders. They share information with their followers, ahead of time. They follow the 1/3 - 2/3 planning rule and give their subordinates time to plan.
In summary, successful company commanders share similar traits. The secret to success is to be yourself and follow time tested principles. Be confident, be fair and always lead by example.
