The Human Terrain System changed from an academic exercise to a chaotic military reality on Colonel Steve Fondacaro's watch, embedding anthropologists into combat units. Now, Fondacaro is gone.

Thousands of High School seniors enlist in the military each year. For many soon to be graduates the armed forces offers money for college, in depth training, and much needed job security. Each applicant must first take a test called the ASVAB, a comprehensive aptitude test given by the military, before beginning their services. The type of job an applicant is given and even whether or not they may join the military at all are determined by his or her ASVAB scores.

Currently, ten sections make up the test. The ASVAB tests in areas such as arithmetic reasoning, general science, and word knowledge among others. To allow each taker of the test a same scale scoring, the test uses a special model. Also, if they are not familiar with a certain test section, there is a very low chance that an applicant will be able to guess correctly.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery uses a 1-99 percentile ranking system. Which means a person scored better or as well as 60 percent of test takers if they get a 60 on the test. To assure the test stays unbiased, evaluations are performed each year on it.

Applicants must get a certain score on the test to gain admittance into the military. Each branch accepts different scores, for the Coast Guard a forty five must be obtained and a thirty one is all the Army requires. If a satisfactory score is not made the first time it can be taken again once a month.

After basic training, the type of job an applicant is assigned to is determined by his or her ASVAB score. The test scores are adept at determining an applicant's suited field of work and since there are thousands of jobs in the military, this method is the best way. A score means getting a job that is well fitted to your abilities.

For those who don't join the armed forces but still take it, the ASVAB is still a helpful tool. High School students can get help choosing their future careers and goals by evaluating their test scores with guidance counselors. The ASVAB scores of students before graduation can be an incredibly useful tool for those who are unsure of their plans for the future.

Many different things are determined by someone's ASVAB scores. Whether you're ready to enlist in the armed forces, what type of assigned job you will get, and even just career help for those that are unsure. The ASVAB is designed to highlight a person's weaknesses and strengths and as there is absolutely no obligation to join anything, why not take it for the useful help it provides?
