When you are leaving the armed forces, and after the army, is the perfect opportunity to discover and gain clarity of your purpose, vision, and path in life. To find your mission.
There is a big clue in that last sentence - you don't create your mission, you find your mission. You discover it.
Each of us has something unique to bring to the world - ideas, inventions, theatrical talent, humour, stories. Each of us is blessed with gifts like these, which often go unnoticed by the very person who matters the most - ourselves.
This can happen because many of us are taught as we grow up that enjoying yourself is something to be done only after the work has finished. It's not that there is a particular lesson meted out on this subject, often we just pick it up from the attitude of those around us.
Sometimes, our gifts and talents are out of the ordinary, and remain hidden because society often discourages us from stepping out of the norm and so our talents generally stay untapped. Nobody likes a show off after all! You really can make your living whilst fulfilling your purpose and a life on purpose, where you are living in your passion, will make you and others happy.
If you still need to find your mission, the following questions may help. Whilst you may check in with them every now and then these are designed to be the starting point for your life plan. You might find it useful to get a small book, specifically to record your thoughts on the following questions:
What were my dreams when I was a child (around 10 years old)? What and who did I want to be?
What have been my greatest moments of joy and fulfillment in my life?
What activities have brought me the greatest joy in my career?
What activities do I enjoy most in my personal life?
What are my talents and natural skills?
What is the ONE most important thing I would like to accomplish in my professional life?
What is the ONE thing I would like to accomplish in my personal life?
List the characteristics which you admire in other people?
List the characteristics which you find obnoxious in other people?
What are the characteristics or traits which you are committed to being?
Write down everything you want to DO in your life?
List everything you want to HAVE in your lifetime?
What has been the one question that has driven you your entire life?
How can I best contribute to the world?
And remember, your family, friends and often acquaintances may be the best source of information to help you find your mission. Don't be shy - ask them. After all this could be the key to your happy life.
I was looking forward to a new life after the army. I didn't expect to feel like a fish out of water.
