Each year, Macy's shows off a parade which is the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This yearly practice began in 1924, which makes it the second oldest parade on Thanksgiving Day in the US, tying with America's Thanksgiving Parade in Detroit. It is younger by four years than the Philadelphia's 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade. The celebration is held on Thanksgiving Day for three hours in New York City from 9AM EST.

During the 1920's, a lot of employees of Macy's department store were first-generation settlers. They embraced the American flags, as if their own, and are truly happy with their new American inheritance. Because of that, they intended to commemorate the Thanksgiving US holiday with the kind of celebration their parents had valued in Europe.

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Christmas Parade was initially called Macy's Christmas Parade and the first ever event was presented in 1924. Fully clad in lively outfits and together with professional performers, employees paraded from 145th Street in Harlem until the flagship store of Macy's on 34th Street. Professional musicians, floats and living animals that are borrowed from Central Park Zoo can be seen on the streets. Like each parade since its inception, Santa Claus is hailed at Herald Square. But the Jolly Old Elf was proclaimed as the "King of the Kiddies" during the initial parade.

Aside from the famous floats and balloons, the Parade highlights live music presentations among others. Marching bands, high school and college alike, from all over the US play a part on this Thanksgiving parade. TV broadcasts present performances from well-known bands and singers.
