What should be the future of gun control laws in America?

After yesterdays school massacre do Americans think there should be stricter gun control laws. I know that there have been many incidents like this in the US and that working class black areas have long been plagued by gun crime. I know that in the US people see it as their constitutional right to bear arms but this was written in the 1700's and technology has made weapons much more deadly since then. Where I live in Ireland there are problems with gun crime but on nowhere near the same scale as in the US. There is a lot of violent crime involving knives and other weapons here and I know for a fact that if people here had easier access to guns that crime would instantly rocket as criminals would have access to more deadly force. What price are Americans prepared to pay for their right to bear arms as I am aware that at the time of the Vietnam war that more Americans died from guncrime at home than died in Vietnam.

Tight gun controls the most powerful weapon

Shrinking the nation's firearms arsenal has been a lifesaver, write Simon Chapman and Philip Alpers.

TEN years ago tomorrow at Port Arthur, Martin Bryant killed 20 innocents with his first 29 bullets, all in the space of 90 seconds in the Broad Arrow Cafe and an adjacent souvenir shop. This lone "pathetic social misfit" (the judge's words) was empowered to achieve his record final toll of 35 people dead and 18 seriously wounded by a type of gun openly sold by law-abiding firearm dealers as "assault weapons".
No more. Attitudes to firearms and gun laws changed almost overnight. After a decade of very public gun massacres - Queen and Hoddle streets in Melbourne and at Strathfield Plaza - people had overwhelmingly had enough of anyone with a grudge gaining easy, mostly legal access to weapons designed expressly to kill a lot of people in a very short time.

Just 12 days after the Port Arthur shootings, John Howard's first major act of leadership, and by far his most popular in his first year as Prime Minister, was to announce nationwide gun law reform.

The new laws specifically addressed mass shootings, banning rapid-fire rifles and shotguns. In the 1996-97 Australian firearms buyback, 643,726 of the newly prohibited guns were purchased by the Government from owners at market value, funded by a small surcharge on the Medicare levy. Tens of thousands of gun owners also voluntarily surrendered non-prohibited firearms without compensation. In all, more than 700,000 guns were removed from the community and destroyed. No other nation had ever attempted anything on this scale.

So, 10 years later, can we see a difference? Resoundingly, yes. The results are in: Australia's tightened gun controls have been followed by remarkable reductions in gun deaths.

In the decade up to and including the Port Arthur event, Australia experienced 11 mass shootings, which are defined as taking five or more victims. One hundred people were shot dead and another 52 wounded. In the 10 years since Port Arthur and the new gun laws, not one mass shooting has occurred in Australia. For this reason alone Australia is a safer place.

But for each Australian killed in a mass shooting in the past 17 years, 80 have died by gunshot in less high-profile events, many of them in family violence. It is here, in the day-to-day tragedy of firearms-related homicide and suicide, that Australia's new restrictions and, perhaps equally importantly, changing attitudes to guns and gun owners, can most plausibly claim to have had the most effect.

Even before Port Arthur, gun-related deaths - suicides, homicides and unintentional shootings - were declining slowly. But the rate of decline accelerated markedly after the tragedy. From 1979 to 1996, 11,110 Australians died by gunshot, with an annual average of 617. In the seven years after new gun laws were announced (1997-2003), the yearly average almost halved, to 331.

With firearm homicide - the gun deaths that attract the most attention - the downward trend has been even more dramatic. In the same two periods, the average annual number of gun homicides fell from 93 to 56. But it was the acceleration in the rate of this decline which proved most remarkable: it fell 70 times faster after the new gun laws, than before.

Have murderers simply switched methods? While the annual average number of all homicides has increased since June 1996, the rate per 100,000 people has fallen marginally, but can be described as steady. This suggests that partially removing a single type of weapon may not reduce a type of crime committed using many possible means. This could change if Howard moves to tighten controls over handguns, which he has flagged.

Guns have a very high lethality index (or, as it is sometimes indelicately put, a high completion rate) in both homicides and suicides. Had the gun law reforms not occurred, more Australians contemplating suicide - in particular, impulsive young people - might have more easily found a method of instantly ending their lives.

Reliable national data on suicide attempts is not available to examine whether suicide completion rates changed after Port Arthur.

By destroying one-fifth of this country's estimated stock of firearms - the equivalent figure in the US would be 40 million guns - Australians shrank significantly their private arsenal. In 2002-03, Australia's rate of 0.27 gun-related homicides per 100,000 people was one-fifteenth that of the US.

Sword Vietnam

Has anyone ever threatened you with a deadly weapon?

For me it was when I was like 8 or 9. This guy who was a vietnam vet who lived in the neighborhood came out with a butcher knife and started yelling at all the kids outside that he was going to kill them.

yes a few times

Farewell fit for a hero: Vietnam veteran finally laid to rest after 39-year wait
Pallbearers carry the remains of Chief Warrant Officer Donald L. Wann to a horse-drawn caisson after the eulogy in Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Wann, who had been missing in action since he was shot down in Vietnam in 1971, was buried Saturday with full military honors.

When you start the fabulous hobby of sword collecting one of the first things you have to come to terms with is the words with which the various parts of the sword are known. This article will describe the following items:

  • Pommel
  • Grips
  • a
    Quillons
  • Cutaway
  • Fuller
  • Blade
  • Point

Starting at the very top of the sword there is either a round or square item at the top of the handle and this in known as the pommel. The pommel performs two very useful functions.

The first is to stop your hand from slipping from the handle, and in fact your hand is sandwiched between two components of the sword, the pommel and the quillons, whose collective responsibilities are to stop your hand from slipping off either into your own blade or off the sword completely.

The pommel has another function which is to form a weapon for close quarters combat. It is used to strike down on the head of an opponent when they are close enough. This is where the term pommelling comes from and it means to strike down upon someone. The word is originates from the french word pommel as do so many words in the sword dictionary.

The next part of a sword is the handle or grips whose name describes the function for which it is used and that is to hold the sword.

The next part is the quillons, which is always spoken of in the plural as there are two halves of a quillon the left hand side and the right hand side. The quillons job is to both protect the hand from the blade and also to stop the hand from slipping off the sword.

Quillons can be made to look quite ornate and in the case of the old swashbuckling swords of the buccaneers they were very large and round and quite similar to the quillons used on an epee which is the sword used for the sport of fencing.

There is also something which in modern language terms would be described as a cutaway but in more traditional terms is known as a fuller. The job of the fuller is to give the blade flexibility and strength and also leads to a reduction in weight as well. It runs the whole length of the blade and is best described as a groove.

The blade is quite obviously for slashing or cutting and does not really require any further description as to the functionality. A more interesting perspective about the blade is what it can be constructed from. Whilst most blades are steel you can get everything from glass to gold although these more ornate structures are for ceremonial purposes rather than battle situations.

And finally there is the point which is the business end of the sword at the very tip of the sword.

The phrase "do you get my point" is believed originate from this part of the sword as in when asking someone if they understood what you mean, as in ancient times to get the point meant you really did understand what they meant.

Alex has been writing for about 3 years. His particular interest is in ancient swords and in particular the hattori hanzo sword. Why not visit his web site http://www.hattorihanzosword.com/ and learn more about this fascinating subject.

Do Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly suffer from foot in mouth disease?

Limbaugh on his radio show referred to soldiers who speak out against the war in Iraq as "phony soldiers." O'Reilly was impressed with how civil the African-American customers were at Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem. They didn't beat their wifes in public or scream obscenties, and they even used forks and knives. O'Reilly meant well. He was trying to dispell racial stereotypes, but it came out as patronizing and naive. Having served in Vietnam as a young Marine, I find Limbaugh's remarks more offensive. It galls me that anyone who has never served a day in our military should call anyone a 'phony soldier.'

I read the transcript of the Limbaugh exchange and was saddened that anyone who doesn't fall into lockstep with the pro-war yakkity-yaks is now deemed "phony". This isn't even a liberal/conservative issue anymore....MANY troops, both active and veteran, have come out to criticize the war in Iraq and how it's been conveyed to the American public.

I read the issue about O'Reilly's trip to Harlem. There, I'll cut him some slack, if just a little. He dined with Al Sharpton which is a feat in itself (not sure I'd even be patient or brave to do that) but he really could've stated his sentiments a little more sensibly.

And so the media organ grinders roll on and on.....

Can i bring a pocket knife with me on an airplane ?

I have this swiss army knife that I have and I use it almost every single day. I will be traveling to Vietnam for 29 days and I would like to bring it. It' is about 1.5 inches long and it does have a sharp tip. It also includes a small scissors with a sharp tip aswell, then theres my folding knife with the blade about 3 inches long . are these fine to put in my checked luggage? i dont plan on carrying it on with me through the metal detector and stuff .

In your checked luggage it should be OK, just not forget to put it in before you go to the plane, both directions of travel.

I do not know if there are any laws about knives in Vietnam.

Search for missing plane off N.S. called off
HALIFAX - The military search for two men whose plane disappeared off the northern coast of Cape Breton was called off Saturday afternoon with no sign of the aircraft being found.

Every year, millions of people learn how to fly and end up getting their pilot's license to fly their own personal plane. There are so many different licenses for operating different kinds of vehicles that it can be easy to mix up the different rules and processes. There are driving licenses, motorcycle licenses, boat licenses, plane licenses, and many more. Float planes, however, are a little different in that they require the skills of a float endorsement boat license as well as mass amounts of floatplane training. It could take you well over a year before you are ready to successfully operate a float plane.

Float planes require a lot of practice with depth perception and steadiness of the hand. Float planes are very different from regular planes in that they have to land and take off from a body of water. Water, is not always the same shape and therefore becomes rigid and uneven when something comes flying towards it. One of the hardest things to do is land a plane but try landing a plane on rocky waters. The key to a perfect landing is a smooth glide in and lots and lots of good practice and training. Because landing is one of the hardest parts, it is a big accomplishment when you finally get it.

Another important characteristic of planes to learn when you are learning how to fly them is how they work in the air. You will want to get to know your plane. Understand its weight, its balance tendencies, as well as how sensitive its controls are. Planes can be very different in that, for example, one steering wheel might be very easy to turn, while one might need a bit more pressure. Some planes require a bit more force than others, while some plans are very easy to move and tend to need less management from you, the pilot.

When learning how to fly the plane and when you are taking your actually lessons, it is extremely important that you can learn how to read and follow all of the gauges that the plane has. If there is a gauge with numbers or symbol that you do not understand, that could potentially solve a problem. Therefore, if you are able to learn about them before hand you will be just fine. The major gauges in the plane are the speedometer, the altitude, and the level of the plane. These three gauges are directly in front of you behind the steering wheel.

Though float planes are very different from any other automobile or vehicle you have ever operated, they are still operational if you can learn the tricks of the trade and get your piloting license. Once you learn how to fly them well, you will be out on the water each and every day! Your new float plane will be your new pride and joy and you will be able to take friends and family out on the water, and into the sky!

Connor R. Sullivan recently researched the business of float endorsement company in order to write an article about the subject. His son completed his floatplane training and is eligible to fly.

TCU Baseball, big-game hunters, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Classy on and off the field When many people purchase a new tablesaw one of the first thing they do is look at the riving knife, think to themselves, "what is this thing" ad then throw it in a drawer or in the trash. Well I'm here to tell you what that thing is and why you should use it. The purpose of a riving knife is to make a tablesaw safer. Riving knives prevent kickback which can be extremely dangerous. Kickback occurs when the workpiece makes contact with the back teeth of the saw blade. The workpiece can be fired into the operators body or worse, pull a hand or other body part into the blade causing serious injury...

It's no secret that metal lunch boxes are going to be a thing of the past soon. The cool bag versus the metal lunch box literally has no real competition at all. There are so many different products of this type. Lunch boxes are all made of metal and food can perish because they basically keep the temperature of the surrounding environment. However with a cool bag the food or contents inside stay at a much cooler temperature and the contents stay cool. Breaking a cool bag down would be much like as follows. The outer shell is made of nylon and PVC coating. The lining is of course made of PVC as well. And most of them have an adjustable strap or a handle of some type. If an individual...

Brass Steel Knob

When it comes to buying grommets, it is always advantageous to prefer a strong material. If you actually go for a weaker material then the problem of durability arises. Most of us know the fact that the most popular material used for grommets is steel. They last longer and they pass the test of time. Some people feel that installing stainless steel grommets is a bit difficult but still I would say that it would be the best choice. So when it comes to the installation of steel grommets you need to actually make sure that the whole installation doesn't hang lose. This is very important for the safety at home. If you're actually planning to buy grommets, then you can get them in your...
