BOWLING DREAMS
Adam Wade If only my last
name was Rockefeller. Many of my dreams could come true! One of these dreams is to build,
own and operate a bowling alley in my beloved Hoboken.
ORIGINS OF WADE'S LOVE FOR BOWLING:
Growing up in New Hampshire I used to love going to the
bowling alley. It was always very exciting. I was 2 or 3 when my mom first started taking me to her bowling
league matches (on Tuesday mornings). I remember those times fondly. The sounds of the
ball rolling down the wood floor and crashing into the pins. My mom was great. She had
tons of bowling trophies, some of which I kept in my room as a teenager. Looking back it
was a bit odd. A 6 inch little league trophy, a 7 inch basketball trophy and a bright pink
14 inch ladies bowling trophy all side by side on my mini-bookcase.
In high school and college if and when I had a date, it was
always to the bowling alley. My mother would give me all her 'free string bowling passes'
so all I had to pay for was the renting of our shoes. It may seem to the average person
that Im petty, but it goes beyond being bowling coupons. I treasure those moments
bowling with Nicole, Andrea, Jessie, and of course Melanie.
BOWLING: THE MOVIE:
In college I shot a movie short about a date and
budding love, in a bowling alley.
What an experience! Looking at it now, I can see how excited
I was to be in a movie that took place IN A BOWLING ALLEY! This is no joke. I can't help
but smile throughout my awful acting debut.
GODFATHER JOE:
Every winter holiday break from college I'd go bowling with
my brother Matt, cousin Greg, and Godfather Joe. We'd always go a few days after
Christmas. Following the bowling we'd go out for pizza and talk about how great/terrible
we did. It was always fun and something we all looked forward to. My Godfather Joe would
pay for everything. Then we'd go back to his house, and he'd make up all chocolate
milkshakes.
IF I HAD A MILLION DOLLARS TO PISS AWAY:
The big city gets to everybody once in a while. There's been
many times after a hard day of work I wish I could let out some frustration as I walk into
the Port Authority. And about a year and a half ago I had a 'GREAT' idea.
On the southwest corner of 42nd and 8th Avenue where there
used to be a Duane Reade 7-8 years ago, there's a vacant storefront in the PA. If I had a
million dollars to piss away, I would rent that space, build a two lane bowling alley. And
charge people headed home from a hard days work, TWO DOLLARS to take a bowling ball and
roll it down a lane and smack some pins.
I think it would help them blow off some steam, it wouldn't
take more than five minutes, and I honestly think it would put many smiles on people's
faces.
I'd even hire a guy to make old fashion hot dogs, and of
course a beer guy - like the ones who walk around sporting events.
AS FOR HOBOKEN:
In the year 2022, if all goes well, I'll be building a
bowling alley in my beloved Hoboken.
Yes, it may seem like many years away, but I'm confident by
then I will have the funds.
-How many lanes?
-Will I be selling hot dogs?
-Will I have midnight glow in the dark bowling?
-Where exactly will the bowling alley be in Hoboken?
-Will I serve Italian Tuna sandwiches from Fiore's on
Fridays?
-Will it be called "Hoboken Wade Lanes?" or
"Wade's Hoboken Bowlerama?"
These are many questions that will have to go unanswered for
now. But I think it would be sweet.
The famous songwriter/singer Harry Chapin once sang that:
"You say you should have been a ballerina, babe
There are songs I should have sung
But I guess our dreams have come and gone
You gotta dream when you are young"
I hope I can keep the dream alive.
