The year was 1993. The Fugitive was the best movie of the year, Stone
Temple Pilots was taking over the music scene, and 8-pound cell phones were all the rage.
Meanwhile in Ponce, Puerto Rico, a deranged man named Carlos Rodriguez-Torres decided to
throw an unsuspecting jogger off an overpass down to a highway and his death.
C-Rod was sentenced to 99 years in prison for his crime.
However, according to Ponce police, he was released from the big house and installed in an
ingenious program where convicts, even those guilty of murder, can live in the comfort of
home while wearing an electronic surveillance ankle bracelet. The San Juan Star reports
that more than 100 convicted murderers were let out of prison thanks to the
"program". But after realizing this simply wasn't a good idea, the government
decided to begin putting participants in the program back in jail starting in 2003. But
when they went looking for Torres-Rodriguez, apparently he wasn't at home. In fact, he
wasn't even in the country.
Instead, C-Rod decided that a vacation in Hoboken was long overdue.
Fortunately for the Hoboken Harriers and Mile Square Running Clubs, Hoboken's Anti-Vice
Squad came across the tourist/murderer in the vicinity of 3rd and Jackson in the city's
public housing complex while doing a sweep for possible drug dealers. The squad, comprised
of Detectives Steven Aguair, Mike DeTrizio and Anthony Russo, as well as Sgt. Mike
DeTrizio, approached C-Rod after not recognizing him as a resident of the building. They
proceeded to question the Puerto Rican why he was there (he said he was visiting an Aunt,
but the name didn't check out) and eventually they compelled him to hand over an ID Card
with a Social Security number on it.
Upon checking the nationwide crime database, police
found a warrant reading that C-Rod had escaped from Puerto Rico after being convicted for
homicide and for not returning an anklet. And if you needed one more reason not to get
body ink, tattoos confirmed that the HPD had nabbed the correct man.
"I applaud our Police Department for their actions," Mayor
Roberts told the Jersey Journal, "and as I have said repeatedly, our public safety
departments do a remarkable job with the highest levels of professionalism."
C-Rod is scheduled to be extradited to Puerto Rico for re-sentencing
soon.
