Peterborough man charged in stabbing death of his mother
A 21-year-old man has been charged with the first degree murder of his mother, who was stabbed to death on Wednesday.
The Chief Medical Officers report for the UK estimates that almost 8 million people suffer from chronic pain. 1.6 million people say it is in their back while another 1 million women report chronic pelvic pain. Nearly half of the people who report the pain say it has lead to depression and 16% say it is so bad they want to die. These people do not have to suffer though; many are finding relief through myofascial release therapy.
Myofascial is a term derived from Latin. Myo means muscle and fascia means band. In your body, there are bands of connective tissue that surround all muscles, bones and organs and research shows that damage to the tissue can cause chronic pain. It is very difficult to identify the damage because it does not show up on an x-ray or an MRI but a trained therapist can find your trigger points and work the area to relieve the pain.
This effective therapy is similar to massage with some subtle differences. The therapist who performs the technique applies gentle sustained pressure to the trigger points, sometimes using their knuckles or palms. Through their experience, massage and physio therapists will seek out connective tissue that has hardened and work the area to loosen it up.
Myofascial release therapy can also be performed on your own. Self myofascial release involves the use of a foam roller. Rollers are typically about 15cm wide and 90cm long.
The roller is placed under various parts of the body and then rolled back and forth to work specific areas. Use of the foam roller is highly recommended for athletes to battle stiffness and soreness which can follow exercise.
Doctors are just beginning to discover the benefits of myofascial release. It is now viewed as a mainstream solution to chronic pain and is being recommended more and more as an alternative to expensive medications or surgeries. Myofascial Release is easy to learn and therapists are needed to work across the UK, Canada and the US.
