American caught on bin Laden hunt
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- An ailing, middle-age construction worker from Colorado, on a self-proclaimed mission to help U.S. troops, armed himself with a dagger, a pistol, a sword, Christian texts, hashish and night-vision goggles and headed to the lawless tribal areas near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border to personally hunt down Osama bin Laden.
As anyone looking for a solid, reliable knife knows, the Buck Knife carries a special weight with it. Most of us, however, do not know the history and why this knife is a household name. A look at how the knife came to be reveals its roots in an earlier era of American history.
The story begins nearly 100 years ago, with a blacksmith who made some changes to how he worked with metals. Creating a worldwide brand was far from his mind. Rather, he was mostly concerned with making his tools stronger, and he did. But this also laid the groundwork for a company that would make its mark on how knives are made.
The outset of World War II presented just the opportunity Buck needed. The US government, as well as others, found itself lacking hardware to support the war effort. Knives were a small but important part of this lacking inventory. Through this voluntary effort, soldiers in various campaigns would come to know and love the knife. This did not change when they came home.
But Buck did not rely on this alone. Instead, he headed out to sell his knives to retailers and dealers throughout the country. This grueling process proved to stoke demand for his high-quality product and before he knew it, the business was up and running.
The road was not always smooth, and the company fell on hard times a few decades later. However, the quality of the knives and some innovations helped the company weather the storm. A big factor in this was innovation. While the initial model continued to be successful, the company recognized the need to modify and update its products to keep up with technological change. Now, Buck Knives come in all shapes and sizes, catering to different uses. In keeping with the times, the company has also gone global, selling a good slice of its inventory abroad.
Despite the global scale of the brand, the Buck Knives is still family-owned. Like with any company, manufacturing and distribution have undergone unforeseeable changes. Access to international markets inevitably brings international competition, which requires adaptation. But its heart, the pride and craftsmanship that have made this brand famous continue to be paramount.
So, at the end of the day, the Buck Knife is just another product in a sea of competitors. But, the rich history of the company and the loyalty of its customers have set it apart as a survivor and, possibly more importantly, a cultural icon.

Eight months' jail for weapons importer A man caught trying to import the largest-ever cache of weapons into Australia has been jailed for eight months. It's important to store your knives properly for safety reason and and to prevent damage and premature dulling of your the blades. It's not a good idea to store knives loosely in a kitchen drawer because it can be dangerous to unwary cooks and the blades can easily be nicked as they slide around with the other kitchen gadgets. If you want to store your knives in a drawer, there a couple of safe options. Knife sheaths or guards wrap around the knife blade and prevent the blade from coming into contact with other utensils or, worse yet,...
