Consider this, you're out hunting one of the most elusive, majestic big game animals in the world - The Rocky Mountain Bull Elk. You're 5 miles from your truck and you're in the most steep and rugged country imaginable, you've just killed a monster bull elk weighing 700-800 pounds unfield dressed. That's almost the same size as a horse. Their hide is as thick as the thickest leather and not to mention the hair that surrounds their hide is just as thick and just as tough. You get ready to field dress the elk and you realize that you've left your knife sharpener in your truck. At that moment your heart almost skips a beat and you slump down while making a strange groaning noise realizing the chore you're about to perform and what you're up against.
Well that happened to me last year elk hunting in Utah. First off let me say, don't ever forget your knife sharpener especially when you're out hunting elk in the west. You'll regret that more than anything the minute you start cutting into that think, strong hide.
To say the least it was by far the toughest field dress I've ever had to perform and I've done plenty in my day. I can't tell you how long I spent skinning that elk and slicing into that hide. Lets just say that I didn't get back to my truck until the middle of the night and I took a 3 hour detour in the wrong direction.
Whether you're out fishing, trapping or hunting you should always bring some type of sharpener whether it's a bench stone or just a pocket sharpener. When you're out enjoying all the beautiful nature God put here for us to enjoy, you never know what you're going to run into and what will happen. A dull knife is a useless knife, a sharp knife is a sportsman's best friend.
Next time you're heading outdoors don't forget your knife sharpener.

If you don’t know what those numbers and letters signify, then there is no way to know...
