Korean War remembered -- six decades later

The rosy picture of the brave Danes who rescued the Jews out of their heart's goodness does not hold water because some of these rescue missions were partly based on economic considerations. Not that that deducts from the bravery of the action, but it brings some nuances to the discussion of these "Danish angels" of World War II. I am glad to say that we are not angels, but ordinary people and that others might have done the same. Actually, that is what the Bulgarians did. As has been stated by Bulgarsk-Dansk Forening (: Bulgarian-Danish Society) in the book "Bulgariens redning af 51,500 jøder" the Bulgarian people saved almost 52,000 Jews, basically because the king, Boris III (1918-1943) succeeded in delaying the deportations. On the other hand there were some Bulgarian-German transactions that lead to disaster for 11,000 Jews from first and foremost Makedonia so the picture of the rescuers is not clear.
(By the way, the above mentioned book is a chapter of another book, i.e. Jans-Joachim Hoppe's "Dimension des Völkermords"; published by Wolfgang Benz, München, 1991: R. Oldenbourg. This book gives a comprehensive reading of the fate of the Jews in all of the countries that were occupied or under pressure by Hitler).
As to the Danish rescue of the Jewish population then only 1 percentage was lost and all in all there was a national will to save these people when the October 1943-huntings started. Denmark had been occupied since April 1940, but had not been treated as roughly as any of the other occupied countries. In Poland the hunt for Jews started in 1939 and 90% were lost. As to Romania then 400,000 Jews were murdered by the population. The rough treatment had turned countryman against countryman, whereas we only had to fight Danish or German Nazi informers.
It should not be overlooked that certain facts - or coincidences - had an important part in the success of the rescue mission. For instance, had the hunt for the Jews been four months earlier it would have been impossible to send them to Sweden which at that time was neutral, but with pro-German tendencies. I do not know whether it had any impact on the mission that the mother of our present queen, Margrethe II, Crown Princess Ingrid, was a Swede, but it should not surprise me if that is the case.
The stories of the rescue go on the bravity of the fishermen who used their boats to bring the Jews to Sweden. It is a very beautiful story and it is true, but not all were able to do it for free as the fishermen also had families to support. If they were caught their families would suffer and perhaps lose everything, including their freedom.
