Modern-day utility crews can forget about those hydraulic-operated bucket trucks that hoist them up to power lines this weekend.

The ratcheting box wrench is an excellent combination of most of the benefits that you get from other wrenches, but combined into one very useful tool. First of all, it is a closed end wrench that helps you keep the wrench securely on the bolt or fastener that you are turning. The two major characteristics of the wrench, that it is closed end and that it ratchets, combine to make a major benefit in the use of the wrench. This benefit means that you do not have to remove the wrench from the head of the fastener after you have made one turn and you need to continue turning the bolt head. To take another "bite" at tightening a bolt for instance, you would just turn the wrench back the opposite way to get that next "bite". You will hear the gear or pawl mechanism clicking while you are turning the wrench backward. The bolt head will not move while you are turning the wrench backward. Once you stop turning the wrench backward the gear or pawl mechanism will engage as you start to tighten the bolt again. Being able to do this means that there must be enough clearance in order to make the turn to tighten and then turn to take the next "bite".

Normally the swing angle of a ratcheting box wrench is about 30 degrees. That means that you would need enough space opposite to the tightening direction of the wrench to turn the wrench back to get another "bite". Usually the closed end wrench will give you the ability to develop higher torque on the bolt you are turning, than its open end counterpart. When using a non-ratcheting box wrench there is a real liability created because the wrench does not have the ratcheting capability. You have to remove the wrench from the head of the bolt in order to take that next "bite". This increases the amount of time that is required to get work done.

The ratcheting box wrench is found usually in the 6 and 12-point types and sometimes the 8-point. The 12-point type wrench is used in lower torque applications, while the 6 and 8-point types are meant for higher torque applications. You can get this tool with both ends closed or as a combination wrench that has one end closed as a ratcheting wrench and the other end as a non-ratcheting open end wrench. The ratcheting end always has a switch that you can flip to change the direction of the wrench action. The ratcheting box wrench comes in a flat version and an offset version. The flat version is just a straight tool, while the offset version has wrench heads at each end that are set at an angle of 25 or 30 degrees. Usually the thickness of the wrench is less than the thickness of a comparable open end or standard combination wrench. The slenderness gives the tool a great deal of usefulness in tight places.

A recent experience with the ratcheting box wrench and its utility came while I was rebuilding a car. To take the bolts out of tight places when disassembling and assembling the engine, I mostly used a set of ratcheting box wrenches and my socket set. These tools saved me a lot of time and consternation in getting this job done quickly. Any time that you have a large assembly job to do, like putting together or taking apart a swing set, it is great idea to have the usefulness of a set of ratcheting box wrenches available to make the job much easier.
