Best way to learn hand to hand combat?

My school is pretty dangerous, there are always fights, and my neighborhood isn't much better. I was threatened by a group of 4 and the only thing that saved me was my Fairbairn-Skykes commando knife. I want to learn how to defend myself effectively, but I don't know what is the best method or how I can train. Any ideas?
