An increasing popular dietary supplement, Krill Oil has gained a niche market and the growth in its use and popularity has brought it into a collision course with a traditional dietary supplement, fish oil. Both products are popular because of their health benefits, particularly since both are primary sources of Omega 3 fats. This has led into a debate on what product has more pronounced health benefits for the consumer.

Omega 3 fats are composed of two main fatty acids, EPA and DHA. Advocates and users of fish oil will argue that while both products provide the body with important Omega 3 fats, krill's oil only provides one-sixth of the DHA omega 3 fatty acids. Recent research has shown that it is the DHA fats that provides for almost all the benefits, particularly for brain and heart health.

To illustrate the discrepancy between the two products, a daily serving of krill's oil will provide the consumer with 90mg of DHA while a daily serving of fish oil will provide the consumer with 540 mg. Another factor worth noting is that krill oil is more expensive than fish oil.

But advocates of krill oil argue that the EPA from this oil contains an important antioxidant called astaxanthin that strengthens the immune system. Antioxidants also protect the body from free radicals that may cause cancer. Furthermore, the oil from krill contains vitamin E, vitamin A, vitamin D and canthaxanthin, which is also potent anti-oxidant. The anti-oxidant potency of krill oil in terms of ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorptance Capacity) was found to be 48x more potent than fish oil.

There are numerous benefits from this dietary supplement. The astaxanthin provides excellent protection against ultraviolet rays (UV rays). Krill oil has also been shown to be effective in lowering LDL cholesterol and in raising HDL cholesterol (up to 44% in some studies). Krill oil has also shown to be effective in treating arthritis, lessening symptoms in premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea.

Due to its small size, experts believe that oil from krill has less toxins as compared to fish oil. And because of the rapid absorption and high anti oxidant content, there is no fishy aftertaste as compared to fish oil.

There are several precautionary measures that have to be taken to ensure the safety of consumers. First, people with allergies for seafoods are adivse to refrain from taking this supplement. Second, people with bleeding disorders and who use blood thinners like aspirin, warfarin and heparin are advised to consult a health expert before taking krill oil. Lastly, people are advised that taking krill's oil may induce the following side effects, diarrhea and indigestion.

So which is better, krill oil or fish oil? I leave the verdict to you.

Hernando County activist Bill Newell Bill Newell, a former school guidance counselor, led many civic organizations. Enjoyment is a matter of subjectivity. Just as one person might like to eat sea food whilst another does not, enjoyment of all aspects of life are dependent upon individual preferences. Yes, there some things which the majority of people would not enjoy, but this does not need to have the effect of ruining ones overall enjoyment of life. The fact is that if you are not enjoying life you can change this personal reality simply by changing your mindset. I am absolutely certain of this fact. Your personal reality is only real because you make it so. What you are thinking...
