When radio station owners look past the momentary inconvenience of installing wireless carrier antennas on their AM radio towers (a process called colocation) they can realize a steady stream of revenue so long as they are useful to the wireless carriers.

For example, one such owner listened to a proposal from a wireless carrier five years ago and soon thereafter his 200-foot-tall tower was earning him extra revenue. This particular tower is now home to 4 different wireless carrier antennas. In all, three of four towers serving this individual's stable of radio stations in are partnering with wireless companies.

The process of colocation requires a patented signal isolation device (CoLoCoil). This device will allow station owners to reap the rewards that come from colocation with wireless carriers.

"I've never had a problem with the CoLoCoils," the individual said, referring to the original installation and several others that followed on his towers. "I would certainly recommend colocation of wireless and other carriers. It is painless."

Many AM radio station owners haven't offered their towers for colocation because they have never been asked. Why? Wireless carries aren't always aware of their towers. It is recommended that owners have their towers listed - it's free - by the Federal Aviation Administration so wireless companies know of their existence.

Different rates are negotiated between the tower owners and the wireless carriers, with height being a determining factor. The higher on a tower an antenna is placed, the greater the premium charged. Typically, wireless partners pay from $1,600 to $2,400 a month to colocate on these structures.

There is a little down time during the construction phase, and sometimes there is some lost broadcast time, but the revenue from the leases can more than make up for the lost time up front.

LBA has years of experience in RF Compliance and tower colocation services.

Bang Your Head: The Rise and Fall of Heavy Metal, David Konow, Three Rivers Press, 2002. I always have been fascinated with both music and history and a book about the history of a particular music is just like killing two birds with one stone. I have read a few books about the history of heavy metal and Bang Your Head is the least elevating one. Of course it was a fun read, but all Rock n Roll books are fun to read. The only thing that made me bought this book is the fact that I have yet to find a book about the rise and fall of the 80's Cock Rock scene, and this book, although not as comprehensive and thorough as I hoped it should be, contained some murky information about the craze,...
