A brass instrument, being a musical instrument, works on the principle of resonance. This type of instrument is provided with valves for changing the pitch of the sound being produced. Pitch of the sound can also be altered by the player by changing the pressure from the lips which is put against the mouthpiece. These instruments are usually plated and polished so that the material of the instrument prevents corrosion. Plating could be done with alloys of copper and silver but other precious metals like gold and silver could also be used. However, it is not necessary that all of them are made from brass as in some cases wood is used for making such instruments like the serpent and the alphorn.
Brass instruments like trumpet, tuba, cornet, baritone horn, etc. are generally made with valves. These valves could be piston as well as rotatory valves. Other instruments like bazooka and trombone, which is main component of jazz music, are categorized as sliding brass instruments.
The air through the instrument through reflection and superimposition produce standing waves. Muscular control of the player and the length of the instrument enables him to get a good range of notes which are then produced accordingly. The removable mouthpiece is another characteristic of these types of instruments. The sound travels straight linearly towards the bell and the sounds produced are well suited for some occasions like marching parades, etc.
Brass types like trumpets and tuba are included in orchestras. Big bands, concert bands and other jazz bands also prefer brass instruments like trumpets, horns, baritones and trombone. This class of musical instruments is primarily main component of western music and provides exotic, romantic, patriotic kind of music comfortably. Brass instruments have undergone drastic change due to advances in technology and tastes of music.
Some brass models like Trombone, Trumpet, Baritone are the most commonly used instruments due to their perfection. Trombone, is blown softly which produces a kind of sound that is rich and also becomes harsh when tones are changed. It has no key or pistons and it is one of its kinds. Tuba is the largest and heavier of all brass instruments and used as a part of marching bands. Trumpets are among the oldest and have three piston valves. Trumpet was used by some of the classical players like Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie. Baritone is a male voice brass instrument. Like other wind instruments Brass Instruments are under the aero phone class of musical instruments.
