The "Tigers" of Bangladesh squared off against India in the second match of the Asia Cup at the Rangiri Dambulla Stadium. India had a strong line-up for this opening game, even though Sachin Tendulkar was rested from the squad. Bangladesh remained the underdogs for this fixture, although they showed glimpses of potential from time to time.
Bangladesh batted first in the game and had one of their more enterprising starts in an ODI. Nine runs came off Praveen Kumar's first over before Tamim Iqbal hit three boundaries in Zaheer Khan's second over. Bangladesh scored 35 for the first wicket in just 17 balls. However, Kumar dismissed Iqbal in the third over for 22 off 12 balls. Mohammad Ashraful joined Imrul Kayes and helped the score to 81 in the 14th over. After Ashish Nehra dismissed Ashraful, Imrul Kayes (37) and Shakib Al Hasan (7) departed with the score at 88 and 100 respectively.
Bangladesh managed to reach 155/4 in the 30th over, before Mahmudullah (23) fell to Ravindra Jadeja; Bangladesh was 155/5. At the start of the 32nd over, bowled by part-time offspinner Virender Sehwag, Bangladesh was 160/5. Sehwag started the over by having Rahim (30) caught at the wicket by MS Dhoni. Sehwag took three more wickets in the 34th over to dismiss Bangladesh for 167 runs in 34.5 overs. Sehwag's spell of 4/6 off 2.5 overs was the best bowling analysis for the Indians, while Ashish Nehra pouched two wickets. Bangladesh lost their last six wickets for just 12 runs, sabotaging their promising start and giving India a facile target.
Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir responded positively to chasing a low total. However, Sehwag fell to Mashrafe Mortaza for 11 at the start of the seventh over. Although Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma fell with the score on 12, to leave India wobbling at 80/3, Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni prevented the Bangladeshis from seizing the momentum. The Bangladeshi bowlers were expensive, but Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan took two wickets each. Gambhir scored 82 off 101 balls, while Dhoni hit an unbeaten 38 off 45 balls. For his composed 82, Gautam Bambhir was the player of the match.
India's victory came by six wickets with 116 balls remaining. India even picked up a bonus point for the margin of victory in this game. With such a comprehensive victory, India were in good stead to qualify for the final of the tournament,

In general, I would say that American era history...
