As a consumer, you have to understand your rights. The difference between knowing and not knowing your own rights is huge. This often means being able to get the best value out of everything you purchase. How many times do you find yourself being dissatisfied with a certain product or quality? Worse, you might have bought it at a very high price.
What people do not know is that they should pay with credit. Yes, spending on credit can be a very dangerous thing to do. But in this case, it is best to do so with that plastic card. Provided your credit has a good standing (you clear credit loans every month and make payments on time), you should buy things on credit. Why is this so? This is because you have the benefit of disputing a charge within 60 days after buying something. This indefinitely gives you the power when it comes to getting your money back for something you have bought.
What if you cannot get back your money? The company just would not compensate you?
It is good advice to write down everything the company claims. People just would not do it in black and white until a dispute occurs. This is even more important when it involves big purchases, for the bigger money at stake. Keep note of conversations, and especially promises made by the salesperson. These are your proof to protect you in future and will make the refund process easier.
Elevate things when they simply would not agree with you. For example, a salesperson might reject your confrontation. But it is a different ball game when you consult his or her superior. If things still do not work, get the CEO (chief executive officer) of the company. Note that you can even do a press release to "badmouth" the company if you want. This is part of knowing your rights.
Spread the word to your friends and family of the company (in case they under deliver their promises). Contact a consumer help group. These groups are usually funded by the media in city areas. With the press behind your back, you have publicity as your leverage point. This will ultimately give you the refund that you want!
If all else fails, you should take the matter to small claims court. This is of course, if the company is not responsive to your claims. For this method to work, you have to plan your finance at the first place. Know whether it is worth your time and effort and money before battling a court case. It does not make sense to fight over a faulty computer mouse in front of judges and lawyers.
