military regulation knife size?

I have a deployment coming up and I'm looking to get myself a good sturdy knife for self defense and general utility purposes. The only problem is I've heard many different things regarding the size of the blade. If anyone could give me a definite answer with some solid backing I'd greatly appreciate it.

Dude, you can bring a Machete if you want. If you can pack it, bring it. We really don't care what you bring over into Iraq or 'Stan as long as it's not a fire arm. Been there done that and went back because I forgot the T-shirt.

Classical Hollywood Cinema

Classical Hollywood Cinema is the time period of the film industry that began with the movie release of "The Birth of a Nation." It incorporates both the Silent Era and Studio Era of filmmaking. Unique to Classical Cinema, the mode of production during this timeframe encouraged film directors to view their work from the perspective of an employee of the studios rather than as auteurists who exercised creative control over their works with an individual film style. The Classical Cinema time period ended in the 1960s when the motion picture industry ushered in a new Post-Classical film style by auteurist film directors with the release of "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) as well as other landmark films of that decade.

Silent Era

The Silent Era is commonly referred to as the "Age of the Silver Screen" from 1917 to 1928. During this time period, there was no sound or synchronized speech accompanying the character's images being projected on the movie screen. To accommodate for the lack of sound, on-screen captions were utilized to emphasize important points and dialogue in the story. Oftentimes, the projection of silent films onto the big screen was accompanied by live instrumental music (pianist, organist, or even a large orchestra). The standard stylistic elements fundamental to classical Hollywood silent filmmaking were implemented through the Silent Era's Director-Unit System. This system of filmmaking included a fully integrated work force with a set of employees that had precise areas of responsibility under the leadership of the film director.

Studio Era

The Studio Era was a period in film history that started after the end of the Silent Era (1927/1928) with the release of "Jazz Singer", the first full length film that contained talking sequences in it. The advent of the Studio Era also marked the beginning of the "Golden Age of Hollywood." The contribution of Irving Thalberg was significant in development of Hollywood's Central Producer System during the Studio Era while he was Chief of Production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). In fact, the successful transition of classical Hollywood film production style from the Silent Era's Director-Unit System to the Studio Era's Central Producer System at MGM took place under Thalberg's leadership. His ability to produce a quality film with aesthetic value was demonstrated through his balanced view of budgetary controls, script and story development, and use of the "star system" in the successful movie "Grand Hotel."

Intrinsic to the studio system, the marketing strategies for motion pictures utilized by the major Hollywood film studios was rather straightforward and uncomplicated because the studios obtained most of their money from theater box office ticket sales throughout America. At that time, there were five major studios that owned a production studio, distribution arm, contracts with actors and technical support personnel, as well as a theater chain. These studios were known as the "Big Five" and included Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century-Fox, Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO), and Loew's, Inc. (owner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/MGM). Their revenues came from monies paid by the theaters for renting films from the studios. Since the "Big Five" studios controlled almost every theater throughout America, they received the majority of their money from box office ticket sales.

To further extend their power over the movie houses throughout America, these studios took steps to control almost all of the smaller independently owned theaters, as well. Through the contracting process of "block booking", theater owners were required to show a block of films (typically in blocks of ten) at their movie house. If the independently owned theaters did not agree to purchase a block of films from a studio, they received no films from the studio at all. Thus, during the Studio Era, the Hollywood film industry was tightly controlled by the powerful studio moguls. However, in 1948, a federal court case outlawed block booking. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the vertical integration of the majors violated federal anti-trust laws and ordered the "Big Five" companies to divest themselves of their theaters over a five-year period. This decision basically brought the studio system era to a close by 1954.

Spain Steel

Global steel output surges 29 per cent
Global steel production surged 29 per cent in May from May 2009, exceeding pre-crisis levels.

Many people, including satellite installers in Spain, get confused about Freeview and Freesat. If satellite TV installers are unable to get their terminology correct, then no wonder British expats on the Costas in Spain are getting more and more confused about how to receive UK TV in Spain.

As British expats move to the warm coastal areas of southern Spain in the Mediterranean, they find it frustrating that they are not able to watch the UK television programmes such as BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5, or the other 100plus other UK TV channels, including Sports, movies and news, that are available to view for free. Although they try to watch local Spanish television channels, some feel the quality of programmes on Spanish TV is not that good as UK TV, they do not show many popular UK TV programmes like Coronation Street or Eastenders, and not all programmes are available in English, (although the switch to Digital Terrestrial Television - TDT - has meant a lot more UK and USA imported programmes are available in English.)

Freeview is a free digital TV package that is available to people living in the UK. It is not, like many people say, available outside the UK especially Spain. You cannot receive Freeview in Spain. Freeview is a UK only digital television system that is transmitted from the land based television transmitter masts, like Emley Moor and Crystal Palace. The signals from these terrestrial transmitters are not strong enough to reach Spain.

Many UK TV channels are available on "free to air" satellite systems. British expats around Europe can watch their favourite UK TV channels for free via free to air satellite in Spain. Free to air means that there is no monthly subscription to pay, unlike the pay TV channels offered on satellite packages offered by Sky TV.

Freesat is the name of a brand of satellite receivers designed to receive these free to air UK satellite television channels. You can also use a Sky digibox or any other digital satellite receiver to receive the free to air signals. A Sky digibox without a viewing card will still be able to receive BBC and ITV channels, and all the channels a Freesat receiver can receive.

You can receive many of the UK free to air TV channels by installing a small satellite dish and a digital satellite set top box. However, due to the frequencies used, the main UK TV channels such as BBC and ITV may not be available on these small satellite dishes, and therefore much larger satellite dishes will be required, from 1.8m to 2.4m.

Spain does have its own version of Freeview, called Television Digital Terrestrial - TDT. Using a TDT set top box, you are able to receive around 30 digital Spanish television channels via your TV aerial on your roof. The digital aspect allows a much clearer picture than the old analogue TV system, and has the option to change the Spanish dubbing soundtrack on UK and USA imported programmes into the original version. It should also be noted that some UK "Freeivew" set top boxes do not work in Spain correctly, as they are programmed for the UK TV service and not the TDT service.

For more on TDT in Spain, installations and equipment required, and the channels available, see: http://www.satandpcguy.com/Site/tdt_spanish_digital_terrestrial_freeview_spain.php

So if an installer says that they are able to install a UK Freeview television system for you in Spain, ask them a few questions. As Freeview is a service received by a TV aerial, then why are they installing a satellite dish? Will you able to receive all the UK Freeview channels, like "Dave" and Sky Sports News, for free on their system, as many channels available for free on Freeview are in fact subscripion only on satellite. Remember You cannot receive Freeview in Spain!

MCCHRYSTAL AFFAIR MAY HAVE A SECOND ACT
WASHINGTON -- It is clear that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, caught in the spider's web of a war that isn't being won and the frustration of his troops, went way out of military bounds in insulting the civilians back home.

The politics of war should be left in the hands of the military not the politicians. When engaged in battle the military leadership should have the ability to decide what are the proper actions to take for #1 to win and #2 to minimize our casualties. Its been proven time and time again when the politicians get involved with military decisions we suffer the loss of good men and women who serve our nation.

The Vietnam War (1964 to 1973) is a good example of politicians gone wild. Not only was this war botched by the political apparatus but it was our government that controlled the news media on what to report and what not to. Whether the war was something we should have gotten involved with or not is and never was the point in my estimation. The point was Americans, the youth of our nation who were put in harm's way with their hands tied behind their backs. I guess that was considered politically correct not to use the power and might at our disposal against a smaller country or weaker country that we are at war with. That kind of thinking cost us over 300,000 wounded with over 58,000 killed in action and over 700 POWs ( just over 100 died in captivity).

The men and women who served during the Vietnam War deserve our respect and our gratitude. The sacrifices they had to live through not only having served in the war but just being a soldier when the military was not very popular in those days. The misreporting of atrocities propagated supposedly by American soldiers reflected upon all our military. Every war has atrocities that are carried out by both sides. This is a reality of war, it happened before Vietnam in other wars and still happens today. You never heard anything good about the actions of our service people over in Vietnam but there were plenty.

Our military did not lose the war in Vietnam. The fact is our military won every conflict and battle that it engaged in during that conflict. The politicians who wavered under public pressure resulting in tying the hands of our military leaders lost this political war.

Celebrate this Memorial Day and honor those fallen heroes of an unpopular war. If you know anyone that served their country during the Vietnam War whether stationed their or not show your appreciation for their devotion, their steadfast to stand with their country at a difficult time of our history. You know what, I replied to all American men who contacted me. However, there were 15 guys who answered my messages. Some guys asked me to chat right away. So, I went to the chat room and chatted with him. Then, I chatted with some guys (of course at different time) and we exchanged phone numbers with some. However, we talked on the phone to understand more about each other. A few weeks later, I decided to go for a face to face meeting with two guys, at different day. Mother died in Yr 2002 in her sleep in her house (as she wanted it to be) one early April Morning after having been served a cup of Vegetable Soup, by her Caregiver, while sitting upright in her bed and made to lie down again. Shortly thereafter, she must have simply dosed off to death - probably, just a few seconds before she could have even seen me visit her that morning. As I was shocked to see her expressionless face while I quickly embraced her tightly in my arms, I still heard her gasp her last breath-of-life. She was 84 yrs old. Mother lived a very much "challenged life". This is her story. As a growing-up bright young provincial girl making good grades in her Elementary and...
