The Glories of Pinehurst
I've been covering the Hilton Head golf beat for more than a dozen years. Time and again, I have espoused an ongoing theory in a wide range of various travel features.

The World of Funny and Strange Awards

Everyone loves to win an award but sometimes you want to be careful of what you wish for because you may just get it. Winning an award is always fun and it is nice to be recognized. Maybe you won employee of the month at work or perhaps your civic work caused your community to recognize you with an outstanding citizen award. But not every award is one you want to put on your mantle and show off to your family and friends. There is a company in Upstate New York that has a bowling tournament every year. First place is a lovely golden bowling pin for the winner to proudly display. Last prize, and there is a last prize, is an old bowling shoe referred to as the Smelly Shoe Award. An old smelly bowling shoe is not what you want sitting on the mantle at home. Of course it is all in fun but some awards and recognitions can be a little critical and sometimes downright mean.

Mr. Blackwell was a well-known fashion critic who released two lists every year that were highly anticipated. The first was the best-dressed celebrity list and to make it on that list meant a whole new level of recognition from the media and possible opportunities in show business. The other list was the top ten worst dressed celebrities and that was a list that usually meant you would find a rather unattractive picture of yourself in a national tabloid magazine. So Mr. Blackwell's worst dressed celebrity is definitely not an award you want to win. But that pales in comparison to what the movie industry has to offer.

Few industries have as many awards as the movie industry. Between the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes, and the People's Choice Awards there are hundreds of award winners every year in Hollywood and that does not count things like the Kids Choice Movie Awards or the MTV Movie Awards either. But as good as Hollywood can be at patting itself on the back there are always Hollywood outsiders who are willing to let Hollywood know that not every movie is an award winner. The desire to keep Hollywood in its place has spawned some funny trophies and award shows and the top funny Hollywood award show of them all is the Razzies.

The Razzies is short for the Golden Raspberry Award and it is given every year for the worst actors and worst movies Hollywood put out for the previous year. The trophy is a large golden raspberry and, needless to say, very few Hollywood celebrities show up to the ceremony each year to collect their award. In recent years Hollywood has been continually accused of having no worthwhile movies coming out and that has caused an increase in the media exposure of the Razzies and its accompanying ceremony every year. Many Oscar winning movies are awarded Razzies and it looks like the Razzies will be around for a very long time.

Aviator sunglasses never go out of style. This is true. Since they were first introduced to the public during WWII, this style of sunglasses with the large lenses under a flat rim have been a popular favorite for both men and women.

During WWII, aviator sunglasses were given to pilots so that they could avoid the harmful glare of the sun when they were flying missions. The sunglasses were not only practical, they were also considered very dashing. So much so that they began to be worn by people who were not flying planes.

In the 1970s, women began wearing aviator glasses as well as men. This fad did not last that long and today, aviator sunglasses are worn almost exclusively by men. They generally have lightly tinted lenses of either yellow or blue. In some cases, they are mirrored.

Aviator sunglasses have wire rims that are very light weight. They have a very masculine look to them which is probably the reason they have appealed to men since the 1940s. Today, you will see many film stars and other male celebrities wearing aviator sunglasses.

It is true that aviator sunglasses never go out of style, despite the reason for wearing them has changed. During WWII, the glare of the sun was a concern because it could prevent a pilot from doing his job properly. Naturally, these sunglasses were a necessity for pilots.

Today, sunglasses are still used to keep the glare from our eyes as we do things outside when the sun is out. The bright sunlight bothers most people and most of us find it very difficult to see when driving or performing a task when the sun is at its brightest. Like the pilots in WWII, many of us feel that it is essential to wear sunglasses when driving a car or operating heavy machinery to avoid injury to ourselves or others. However, sunglasses today are not just used to keep the glare out.

Eye cancer, macular degeneration and cataracts are all linked to the ever increasing ultra violet rays from the sun. We owe it to ourselves to keep the sun out of our eyes not only so we can see, but so that we can see in the future. Although cataracts can be treated with laser therapy most of the time, eye cancer can be deadly. There is a form of melanoma that attacks the eyes and can cause blindness or even death. Skin cancers like melanoma are at an all time high and are one of the few cancers that are growing at an alarming rate.

Macular degeneration can also cause weak eyesight and blindness. Why go through any of these problems when you age when you can avoid them by wearing sunglasses?

If you want to purchase a pair of sunglasses that will protect your eyes from the glare of the sun and also look good now and for ages to come, invest in a pair of aviator sunglasses. Unlike other types of sunglasses, aviator sunglasses never go out of style.

The author Kirk Bachelder runs a wholesale sunglasses company who manufactures the popular Aviator Sunglasses

Owning a German Shepherd can be lots of fun. Because of their intelligence, playful nature, and loyalty, they can become your best friend or a beloved family member. If ever you are interested in getting one and have no idea where to start, then here are some tips to help you.

The breed

The German Shepherd or GSD gained its popularity around the world due to its intelligence and temperament. It is because of these traits that GSDs can easily be trained. It is also considered as the most diverse breed in history. The list of jobs which this breed can do goes on and on.Traditionally, GSDs are great herding dogs and police dogs, but they can also be useful as watchdogs, leaders of the blind, in search and rescue, scent identification, and as a companion. Though they may look poised and friendly, GSDs can be very aggressive when provoked.

The physical attributes

An ideal German Shepherd is active and alert. Its body is agile, powerful, and usually longer than it is taller, giving it a deep-bodied look.

The average height of a GSD is around 24 to 26 inches. The ideal proportion of a GSD is 10 to 8 1/2 (length to height) and this creates a body that is slightly elongated. It has a straight muzzle that is accented by its elegant black nose. Its jaws are strong which enable it to bite through anything and it should have a set of 42 teeth, 22 in the upper jaw and 20 below. Its eyes are dark and shaped like almonds which give it a sense of intelligence. The ears of a GSD should always point upward. The more they stand erect, the better.

It has two coats of medium length. The first coat is dense and rough, covering an undercoat which should not be visible at the top. The GSD's hairs are coarser on its neck and behind its legs.

The color of the GSD differ, but usually they come in color combinations such as black and tan, black and red, black and cream, solid black, and black and silver. There may be some GSDs that are white in color. But for some breeders who are purists, they do not consider this color for this breed.

German Shepherds provides detailed information on German Shepherds, German Shepherd Breeders, German Shepherd Kennels, German Shepherd Puppies and more. German Shepherds is affiliated with Golden Retriever Training.

WWII as Told by Heller's Catch-22 and Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five

Everyone is talking about the new HBO miniseries The Pacific. While it is well scripted, brilliantly performed, and visually realistic, what really has critics' attention is its jumbled storyline. Herein, they say, lies the series' real strength. So why is it that when we have no overarching narrative, we get bad marks in creative writing, but when Tom Hanks does it, he gets his own miniseries?

Historically, war stories have been told from a zoomed-out perspective that focuses on major events and overall movements. This is a tidy, logical, and totally misleading way of representing war. Just ask any veteran. With time, however, war stories have become increasingly fragmented, switching from the historian's perspective to the combatant's. With this trend comes a heightened awareness of - and ambiguity toward - the morality of individual actions during war.

With technological developments immensely increasing our capacity for destruction, the last century has forever changed the way the world looks at combat. WWI started with the assassination of one man and spiraled out of control into a thirty/plus-nation massacre. WWII had an unprecedented fifty million civilian casualties - many of whom were not simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's no wonder that the way war stories are told increasingly reflects a frustrated, absurdist point of view.

Joseph Heller's 1961 novel, Catch-22, is one of the finest examples of war satire. It follows – if you can justify using that word – a Captain Yossarian, who is hell-bent on getting out of fighting in WWII because he thinks "every one of them" is trying to kill him. Every one of whom? Them. His dream is to get discharged on grounds of insanity, but obviously he can't request to leave outright. After all, only sane people would want to stop fighting, which means the only people qualified to leave are the ones who want to be there in the first place. Now you see why the novel coined the term "catch-22".

Heller's novel is filled with enough circular reasoning to give Lewis Carroll a run for his money. If the idiocy of the plot itself isn't enough to drive the point home, the plot structure certainly will: its forty-two chapters shuffle through time unannounced and incessantly, leaving us readers just as disoriented as the soldiers themselves. Mercifully, Catch-22 is hilarious, which seems to suggest that sometimes, there's really nothing you can do but laugh.

Another WWII novel in this vein is Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, which he published in 1969 based on his experience as a prisoner of war during the Allied bombing of Dresden. Its protagonist, Billy Pilgrim, is an optometrist who is woefully unprepared for the war. At one point, he is saved from extremely friendly fire by the fortuitous arrival of German soldiers, who take him and his would-be assassin prisoner. Because they are locked safely away in a Dresden slaughterhouse, Billy and the other prisoners miraculously survive the demolition of the city.

If this all sounds unsatisfactorily straightforward to you, you'll be happy to hear that Billy is also involuntarily time-tripping between different moments in his life, taking you, the reader, along for the ride. Among these moments is his future life as an abductee on the planet Tralfamadore, where he lives in captivity with another abductee, also from Earth, who happens to be a female porn star. Living with the Tralfamadorians teaches Billy that because there's no such thing as linear time, there's also no free will, which keeps Billy from getting too worked up about the whole thing.

So, the next time you sit down to watch a dizzying installment of The Pacific, keep in mind that it's books like Catch-22 and Slaughterhouse-Five that inspired its unusual piecemeal structure. After all, who wants to stay focused on the big picture when there doesn't seem to be one.
