Kids in the Victorian era had a tough life. However, they did enjoy playing as everybody else does. Many of them were required to work long hours. Not many kids could afford toys. However, generally it was only the upper class and middle class that had any toys at all.

In Victorian era, toys were primarily being made by hand. Any toys that were purchased were made by a skilled craftsman. Lower class perhaps built their own toys that were given during popular festivals such as Christmas. Toys were very few simply because of the expense and time that it took to build them.

Therefore, unlike to day, it was not uncommon to see even upper class children to be limited on the toys.

As the industrial revolution really began to change the way of life for many people, toys were becoming increasingly popular during Victorian Era.

Since many of them were being mass produced in a short period of time using machines, the pricing of the toys dropped. It was now not so uncommon to see even the lower class children to have a handful of small toys.

One major change happened by the industrial revolution is the appearance of the toys. Prior to this, almost all toys were handcrafted which typically meant some type of wood and sometimes a metal of some kind.

The colors were limited and many times were somewhat of poor quality. However, with the introduction of mechanization toys started becoming varied in material used, colours, shapes and quality.

Knife Wielding Man in Downtown Spokane Apprehended
SPOKANE, Wash. - Spokane Police arrested 48 year-old Wilfred Dale Corse for brandishing a hunting knife at several people on a public sidewalk.  Corse was booked into Spokane County Jail for a weapon apparently capable of producing bodily harm and possession of less than 1 ounce of Marijuana.

A stone fireplace adds a rustic, solid appeal to any room's décor. The fireplace has long been a centerpiece for many homes. It serves as a gathering point, a place where the family comes together and shares some good cheer, a warm drink, a good story. When you add wood and make a fire, you have a place where you can sit for hours and just soak in the warmth. The fireplace is so ingrained in our culture, that almost every home has one and many paintings depict family gatherings around it.

If you are not one of the lucky people who have a house with a fireplace, never fear because there are so many options out there. You have a million choices regarding building materials and construction. If you get a contractor, be sure that they have experience and a good list of references and that they know how to deal with local codes and ordinances. One of the first choices you are likely to make is what type of configuration you want. You can choose a free standing unit which is set away from the walls, or you may choose a unit that is built into the wall. Typically, free standing units burn wood or coal and are made of cast iron and have an exhaust pipe which goes through the wall or ceiling to exhaust combustion fumes. The benefit of a free standing unit is the flexibility of moving it to another room or simply getting rid of it without any major demolition and modification to your home.

Most people don't like the look of cast iron. Free standing units are now available in a huge variety of styles and colors and materials. You can get a unit that looks like an audio video cabinet. The flames are centered where a television would normally be and you are protected by glass doors and optionally a chain link barrier. The cabinet is finished in wood accents and even has storage for firewood underneath in an attractive alcove. The exhaust pipe is hidden by the top of the cabinet so it has a very neat appearance.

If you have a large home, you would normally opt for a stone fireplace built into the wall. You can also have it finished in brick or marble or granite, any number of materials are suitable. Installation is much more involved than it would be for a free standing unit, but it is well worth the hassle and cost as your family will enjoy it for years to come. If you have a talented stone mason, they can craft a wonderful fireplace and mantle. Some ideas include half-round tops, or the traditional rectangular opening. There is no limit to what you can build. Just make sure that you look at plenty of pictures. You can get some great ideas such as marble accents, statues, granite tops, cooking inserts, ventilation fans, etc. You can also have a gas line installed and burn gas instead of firewood. This can come in handy on a cold day when you run out of wood.

Stone fireplace styles are a great way of making your home look more elegant. Stone fireplaces add something special to any home they inhabit.

Bowie Knives: Then and Now

There are a lot of stories about how the bowie knife came about.   Bowie Knife was named after a famous soldier, land speculator, slave trader, gambler named Colonel James Bowie.  The story goes that James was in a fight in 1826 where a sheriff named Norris Wright fired at James at point blank range but the bullet was deflected and James survived the encounter. After the fight, James' brother Rezin Bowie gave James a large knife that resembled a large butcher knife.  Many believe that James' brother Rezin Bowie actually designed the knife and commissioned the first one to be made and not James Black, an Arkansas blacksmith as others claim.

James’Bowie had been involved in a famous fight where his knife had been of great help to him. All those who witnessed the fight remembered Bowie's "big butcher knife". His fight was reported in newspapers around the country and the legend of Jim Bowie and his Bowie knife was born. People everywhere wanted a Bowie knife and countless versions of various sizes and styles were made by countless cutlers and blacksmiths.

Since then, the famous knife has been redesigned and popularized in Hollywood movies like “The Iron Mistress” and several books and TV shows.  In the late 1970s, Bowie knives with saw teeth machined into the back side of the blade have had a certain popularity among collectors, possibly due to the appearance of such a knife in the first Rambo film with Sylvester Stallone. Knives with this feature are still being made and sold, often called "survival knives" and incorporating a hollow handle that can theoretically be used to carry assorted survival gear, of quality ranging from the excellent to the very poor. Today,  almost any knife with a blade more than a few inches long and a clip point is often called a Bowie knife. For that reason, the Bowie knife deserves a part in knife history as one of the most famous and often copied knives in the world.

Today, Bowie Knife comes with handles made of wood, bone, leather or gold, in lengths ranging from miniature to near short sword size. Handles have finger holds and brass plated guards and pommels.  You can now have  varied choices  from the different types of <a keyword=”Bowie  Knives for salehref= “www.BowieKnifesale.com”> Bowie  Knives for sale </a>  or  a <a keyword=”custom bowie knife” href= “www.BowieKnifesale.com”> custom bowie knife</a>. You can also avail of good bargain prices  in  stores offering <a keyword=”Bowie Knife sale”href= “www.BowieKnifesale.com”> Bowie Knife sale</a>.

Nevertheless, the choice of a Bowie knife is an acquisition that requires a great deal of review and study for the true aficionado or collector.  Weight, balance, appearance and size are all features that should be reviewed and ranked before making the final selection of the right Bowie knife.

The term "Bowie knife" does not refer to a specific company, as many believe. The term actually refers to a certain style of knife popularized by Colonel James "Jim" Bowie. Today, a bowie knife is any type of large sheath knife with a clip point.

The first knives made for Jim Bowie throughout his lifetime resembled other common knives of that time period. The first knife, designed by Jim Bowie's brother and made by blacksmith James Black, looked like a cross between a Spanish hunting knife and a regular butcher knife, with a blade nearly 10 inches long, a quarter of an inch thick, and about an inch and a half wide. Unlike modern Bowie knives, this knife did not have a clip point; it also did not have a hand guard, unlike modern versions. The first Bowie knife and all subsequent knives made by James Black are known for very hard steel; he died without giving up the secret, and to the present day, the process has not been duplicated.

This first version of the Bowie knife became quite famous after a fight following a duel in 1827. Once the duel was over, a fight broke out among the spectators, and Bowie killed three men using his knife even though he had been shot with a rifle. When Bowie and his knife rose to instant popularity, Bowie and his brother began receiving many requests for the knife, and ended up commissioning many versions from various knife makers.

Most Bowie knives have a blade of between 6 and 12 inches long. The steel is usually relatively thick and broad, up to 2 inches wide and 1/4" thick. Some Bowie knife blades have a strip of brass, copper, or another soft metal, which was intended as a shock absorber to prevent relatively poor quality blades from breaking. Other features included an upper guard to catch an opponent's blade and protect the user's hand. Some also included a unique notch on the bottom of the blade, near the hilt. This "Spanish Notch" is said to have been used to catch the opponent's blade, although its actual use is somewhat unclear. It may have been used as a tool or as a guide for the blade sharpening process.

The clip point found on most Bowie knives had a unique back edge, sometimes called a "false edge," which could also be sharpened. These knives were made by many companies in Sheffield, England, since the 1850s, and are sometimes called "Sheffield Bowie" knives. The Bowie knife also has a curved tip. Since the 1960s many Bowie knives have been made with serrated teeth on the blade's backside; during the Vietnam War the U.S. Army issued these knives, because the teeth could cut through the acrylic of a downed plane or helicopter.

Today, many different companies make Bowie knives, and term is often used to describe any large sheath knife. They are available in decorative and commemorative styles as well as functional hunting or survival knives. This knife, in its modern incarnation, is useful for camping and hunting as well as a weapon; it is designed to do both jobs exceptionally well, leading to its present-day popularity.

Sharpen 'Em offers a large selection of quality knife sharpeners from all the best manufacturers, from low-budget pocket-sized sharpeners to high-end sharpening steels.

Civil rights workers remembered
Three men made a lasting impact on Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Neshoba County in 1964 by fighting for equality in a time when it was unpopular.     James Chaney, Michael Schwerner and Andrew Goodman were in Neshoba County for voter registration many years ago. They became sidetracked when Mt. Zion was burned down, deciding to investigate the crime. Mt. Zion ended up being the last ...

Under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Title VII protects people from employers' discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. While Title VII only applies to businesses of 15 employees or more, it was crucial legislation for equal opportunity employment. Unfortunately, Title VII has been enacted for nearly 50 years and its stipulations are still not upheld by all employers.

Title VII

Previous to Civil Rights Act, employers were able to discriminate against potential employees for any reason. The segregation of the workforce was not only divided between "white jobs" and "black jobs," women were excluded in many sectors. Higher paying jobs were almost exclusively performed by white men, and blue collar jobs were occupied predominantly by racial minorities.

Following the legislation outlawing employer discrimination, many employment standards were erased. For example, there were height regulations on being a police officer that excluded almost all women. In an effort to abide by the Civil Rights Act, law enforcement officials did away with the height requirement. Similar accommodations were made in all sectors of the workforce.

Exceptions

Title VII allows employers to discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin under certain circumstances when such characteristics are considered a "bona fide occupational requirement," or a BFOQ. The circumstances surrounding BFOQs require that the characteristic be necessary in order for an employee to perform the job satisfactorily. For example, when a director is casting an actor for the role of a Cuban general, they may discriminate based on a person's nation of origin.

Situations when BFOQs apply are rare and the requirements surrounding their legality are very strict.

Filing a Complaint

If you have experienced workplace discrimination, there are several options for a course of action. Under Title VII, you can file a complaint with your state's Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or the Fair Employment Practices Agency (FEPA). You must file a complaint at one of these agencies within 180 days of suspected discrimination in order for it to be valid. These agencies will take up a lawsuit against the employer on your behalf if you do not want to hire a personal attorney.

Additionally, you have the right to file a personal lawsuit against their employer. If you are seeking legal representation for a violation of your civil rights, the San Antonio civil rights attorneys may be able to help. For more information on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, or filing a complaint against an employer, contact the San Antonio civil rights attorneys of Melton & Kumler, LLP.

Good reads We crave better-than-average books. Self Defense And Street Fight PsychologyLet's speak about the psychological aspect of a street collision. You should differentiate two items. You must realize, whether your fight is a result of a usual domestic conflict, or you are attacked by a robber, killer or bandit. Your actions will flow depending on these circumstances.

If it is an everyday domestic conflict that happens in the street (someone pushed you or your leg, disturbed the queue order etc.), you should not use your fighting knowledge and skills to put your opponent out of action.

As a rule, all these conflicts occur because of trifles, and you need to behave...
