MYTHS GO WEST
Philosophers don't usually do interviews or pose for photographers when they publish a new book. This is the first time for Robert B. Pippin, author of "Hollywood Westerns and American Myth: The Importance of Howard Hawks and John Ford for Political Philosophy." Interpreting America through screen classics starring John Wayne and James Stewart draws a bigger crowd than "The Absence of Aesthetics ...

The Bowie knife

The Bowie knife. Made popular by Jim Bowie. It is one of the most famous knives in America. It was first made by a mane named James Black. All though the bowie knife was not just one design but many designs that evolved over the years. The store of how Jim Bowie and his knife first started when he was involved in the sandbar duel in 1827. I fight started and Bowie and his knife killed a man named Norris Wright. Even thought he was wounded with a  rifle shot he drove back Wrights party and he and his knife became instantly famous. After this event every one wanted a bowie knife.

The first Bowie knives where at least 6 inches long and  normally about two and a half inches in width. There is really know set size that these knives have to be but that is what they are all about. There are some that are bigger and  smaller. Now the actual design of the bowie knife is very sound design the curved top part of the edge is for skinning a carcass. While the strait part of the edge is for straight cutting. It is said that the bowie knife is long enough to use as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet. Later the United States Air Force put saw teeth on the back side of the knife. The reason for this is to saw thought acrylic glass canopy of a crashed aircraft. The United States Army also gave this variation of the bowie knife  to its helicopter crews for the same reason.

There are many variations of the bowie knife. Some use this name to describe any large sheath knife. In the Civil War Confederate soldiers made huge knives called D-Guard Bowie knives. Even thought they where more like short swords. Bowie knives are still very popular with collectors and there are many spin off like the Ka-Bar. It is a knife that is based off the Bowie design. Ernest Emerson used the Bowie as a logo on his folding Bowie knives.

Jim Bowie was inducted into the Blade Magazine in the 1988 Blade show in Atlanta Georgia for his huge impact on the knife making industry. Now the Bowie knife is illegal in many states. Even in the state where Jim Bowie died (Texas) Where Jim Bowie and his knife fought and died in the Alamo to help make Texas apart of the United States. It is also illegal in many other states.

Long-ago person found
We could spend many words describing the writing of Juneau author Lynn Schooler and speculating about why it has made such an impact on readers outside Alaska. However, this excerpt from his recent book, "Walking Home," can speak for itself.

Transgressive Art - The Concept

As evident from the name, Transgressive Art is the one that transgresses against the basic norms or the traditionally accepted rules. In order words, Transgressive Art can be defined as a Shocking Art, developed to insult the social conservatives of one type or another. The word 'transgressive' has a wide meaning ranging from offenses against God, to breaching pieties and taboos, to crossing the conventional boundaries. Anthony Julius (1956), an eminent lawyer and lecturer, in his book Transgressions: The Offences of Art (2003) provides a useful typology to the Transgressions artwork, by breaking it into the following categories:

o By violating its own rule

o By breaking taboos

o By being politically resistant

Writer Jack Sergeant's Deathtripping: The Cinema of Transgression was the most thorough book on the early Transgressive movement.

The History

In 1985, American filmmaker Nick Zedd in his 'Cinema of Transgression' used the term 'transgressive' for the first time to show his association with some of the filmmakers, such as Andy Warhol (1928-87), John Waters (born 1946), and Kenneth Anger (born 1927). In the later 90s, Transgressive Art extended its boundaries from art to literature and music. Around the same time, the art form gained popularity in China too.

The Details

Bordering on Dadaism, Surrealism, and Fluxus, Transgressive Art deals with mentally abnormal levels and psychological disturbances.

The Artists & the Artworks

Transgression Art was a Visual Arts movement. The sculptures, collages, and installations, intended to upset Christian religious sensibilities are among the most infamous works of Transgressive Art. The milestones range from the French painter Edouard Manet's (1832-83) 'Le Dejeuner sur l'herbe' (1862-63), to the French artist Marcel Duchamp's (1887-1968) 'Fountain' (1917), to American photographer Andres Serrano's (born 1950) 'Piss Christ' (1987) - depicting a crucifix in a beaker of urine, to British painter Chris Ofili's (born 1968) multi-media painting 'The Holy Virgin Mary' - some parts were made of elephant dung, to English performance artist Marisa Carnesky's 'Jewess Tatooess' (2000).

Several Chinese artists have also done iconic work in the field. Zhu Yu's (born 1970) images of himself eating human fetus, Peng Yu's (born 1974) animal killing, and Yang Zhi Chao's (born 1963) extreme body art are some marked works in the genre. In the early 80s, the famous American Transgressive artist was Richard Kern (born 1954). He started making films which some unpopular underground actors like Nick Zedd and Lung Leg.

The famous Transgressive artists of the 90s were American writer Lisa Crystal Carver (born 1968), American Punk Rock singer and lyricist GG Allin (1956-93), French performer Costes, and American artist Dame Darcy (born 1971). These artists significantly modified the art form. They were the source of influence for other artists, such as American band Cock E.S.P., German musician Alec Empire (born 1972), American action group Crash Worship, American writer Liz Armstrong, Iraqi-American film maker Usama Alshaibi (born 1969), British artist Lennie Lee, American Noise Artist Andy Ortmann, American musician Weasel Walter and American cartoonist Peter Bagge (born 1957).

10 years after Md. monsignor's slaying, his nephew joins priesthood

When you go out to purchase Bowie knives you'll likely be surprised by some of the options available. Bowies are known for their distinctive blade style, their hand guard and their size. They are a combination fighting, hunting and utility knife. As is the case with all knives, there are numerous variations in design that appeal to some users and not to others. Many of these design variations center on the blade. Different blade configurations are preferred depending on the planned utilization of the knife.

The way in which the blades on Bowie knives are shaped is referred to as the grind of the blade. It is also sometimes referred to by its end result, and is then called the bevel. Both of these terms simply refer to how the edge of the blade is formed and to its characteristics where the angle of the edge is concerned. A chisel-ground blade is a one-sided blade that can be referred to as either right- or left-handed, depending upon the side on which it is ground.

Most chisel point Bowie knives are ground to a 45-degree angle on one side and are flat on the other. Where hand-sharpening is concerned, this is the easiest type of blade to maintain. In fact, this grind is used on kitchen knives a great deal for this reason. The knife need only be sharpened on the one side, the excess metal is removed from the other and it's very difficult to do any damage to the bevel.

Bowie knives with this type of blade will have some distinctive cutting characteristics. They'll tend to pull away from the side to which they're handed, for starters. These edges can be incredibly sharp, but they are more brittle. This grind is often used where knives need to be precise but not remarkably durable, such as in the case of the aforementioned kitchen knives. This grind can work for a Bowie, provided its limitations are kept in mind.

A Bowie knife with this grind is easy to sharpen in the field. In fact, with in the space of a few strokes along a sharpening stone, these blades can be largely restored to good edges, even if they've been heavily worn. Remember the fragility of the edge, however. This edge will give great cutting results in soft tissue, but it will dull very quickly if it is used for rugged purposes, such as cutting through bone or wood.

Pony Express: adventure, legend and lies
SAND SPRINGS -- Out here, miles from nowhere, one doesn't need much of an imagination to visualize "Pony Bob" Haslam galloping by on his horse while being pursued by Indians.

There are three primary types of sushi knives:

Heavy Duty Cleaver (Debo-Bocho)

This type of knife is used for cutting through thick bones and filleting fish. Probably won't need this if you are buying your fish in prepared blocks.

Sashimi Knife (Sashimi-Bocho)

This knife is used for the finish cutting. Cutting the pieces off of the blocks of fish and shaping the pieces into presentable offerings.

Vegetable Knife (Usuba or Nakiri Bocho)

Used for cutting razor thin pieces of vegetables required in the recipes. Also can chop or mince the vegetables.

The knives can be made of carbon steel, stainless steel or new composite metals. Take your pick, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. For instance, while the carbon steel knife will hold a very sharp edge it also has the disadvantage of rusting if not properly maintained. The stainless steel knife won't rust but it won't hold an edge like the carbon steel one will. The new composite knives will hold an edge and will not rust but they are the most expensive of the lot.

The main point you want to consider when choosing is to find one that is well balanced and comfortable, almost like an extension of your hand.

Whatever you choose make sure you follow the following tips:

* Don't hurry. These knives are extremely sharp and will cut you before you even feel it.

* Use a cutting board. Never let the knife hit surfaces that will dull or mar the blade.

* Lay your knife down away from the working surface and pointed away from you

* Keep your hands and knife clean and dry while using.

Using a little common sense while cutting your sushi ingredients will go a long way to keeping you safe while preparing your sushi.
