The Legacy of the British Raj in India

The British ruled over and administered India for the best part of 100 years.

They started trading with India in the early 1600’s. By the mid 1700’s they were engaged in fighting against various kingdoms. By the mid 1800’s they were fully in control of the Indian subcontinent and were either directly administering through the means of the Indian civil service, or were letting the local Maharajahs administer their own Kingdoms as long as the Maharajahs were paying the British the desired licence fee and were prepared to follow the terms and conditions set out by the British.

In 1947 the British left India partitioned into India and Pakistan as a result of which over one million people died in migration between the two new countries. In addition India was virtually bankrupt with very little infrastructure

or industry. Yet when the British first went to India in the 1600’s it was a very prosperous place with a large GDP and a huge manufacturing base, which is the reason why the British wanted to trade in the first place. The conclusion being that the British left India in a far worse state then how they found it.

Since 1947 India has developed all its infrastructure and industries from ground up, including roads, agriculture, textiles, steel, nuclear, space, military, telecoms and IT and much more. It has made so much progress that some consider it to be a potential global superpower in the very near future, and this has all happened within 60 years of The British leaving India.

So what really was the legacy of the British in India? Many would say that the British went into a prosperous land, bled it dry, and then left. Others would say the British brought culture (education to the heathens), technology and of course the great English language to a country that otherwise would never have experienced all of this.

But one point that often gets missed is that India is now a united country with a democracy and all the relevant institutions needed to sustain democracy, like a judiciary and armed forces. The British had a big hand in this although their motives were all together different. Basically when the British came to India in the 1600’s, it was a fragmented country with many little kingdoms none of whom liked each other. The British took advantage of these differences and slowly gobbled up each kingdom, eventually bringing the sum total of all these kingdoms under British rule. Eventually when the British left they handed over a united India.

It seems that this unification could only have been achieved by an alien power like the British because the Kingdoms hated each other to the extent that they would join the British against each other, yet they would not join each other against the British. This character flaw in the Indian persona is exactly what the British exploited and is also why it would have been very difficult for the Indians to have unified by themselves without some external influence.

India has made great progress over the last 60 years because it is unified. Surely this has to be counted as an important British legac

SAS 70 Audit Pricing & Scoping Information You Need to Know

In today’s complex and growing regulatory compliance arena, SAS 70 Type I and Type II audits have become commonplace for many organizations that provide critical outsourcing services to companies. Known in the SAS 70 world as a “service organizations”, these companies range from traditional payroll companies, Software as a Service (SaaS) providers, data centers, and third party administrators (TPA), just to name a few.

They’ve all fallen under the mantra of having to be SAS 70 compliant, either because of Sarbanes Oxley (SOX) or some other type of compliance mandate. Often, the first question from these service organizations is how much does a SAS 70 cost. What’s important to note are the two main factors that drive SAS 70 audit pricing: who the CPA firm is conducting the audit and what is the scope of the audit itself.

CPA Firms Who Specialize in SAS 70 Audits

From small regional accounting firms to the nationally recognized big four firms, there are a host of providers available for SAS 70 audits. As with anything in life, most organizations try to find the most value for their money. Small regional firms may be cost-effective, yet they may lack the expertise and name recognition of other firms. Likewise, big four accounting firms will charge you a heavy premium audit fee, yet will “stamp” their name on the report, ultimately giving it a high level of credibility simply based on who they are.

Because SAS 70 Type I and Type II audit prices have a wide range, it’s probably a good idea to pick the healthy middle, that is, a firm who is specialized, nationally known, not too large and bureaucratic, and provides you with a cost-effective, “fixed fee” for the audit. You get highly specialized auditors, a fair fee, and traditionally a quick turnaround in receiving the final report from the CPA firm.

Scoping for the SAS 70 Audit

Many variables come into play for pricing considerations, but scoping is so important. It tells you and the CPA firm what will be tested, where it will be tested, and how long the test period will be, if a SAS 70 Type II audit is being conducted. With that said, listed below are the main points to discuss and consider with any CPA firm you enter into dialogue with regarding a SAS 70 Type I or Type II audit. Use this as a baseline for conversing on the scope of the audit and it will ensure your fees are fair and equitable from the proposal you ultimately receive:

  • Discuss if the audit will be only a “general controls’ audit, that is, one that covers the essential, core components of any SAS 70 audit, or will their be specific business processes or activities included in the scope. For example, if you are a data center, will the CPA firm include in the scope all managed services activities you conduct. Another example would be if you are a third party administrator (TPA); would the scope include testing for specific plan administration and billing & eligibility activities, or would it just be a general controls audit. In essence, discuss and come to an agreement on what additional business lines outside the scope of a “general controls” SAS 70 will the audit fee include.

  • Location-Where are you primary facilities located and what testing has is done at these physical locations. You may have more than one location, and if so, the CPA firm needs to know what is being conducted there and if it will be included in the scope.

  • Test Period-If conducting a SAS 70 Type II audit, what will the test period be. Traditionally, test periods range from six (6) to twelve (12) months, but they may be shorter based on pressing circumstances. The longer the audit test period, then generally the more the CPA firm will charge. Thus, agree on what the test period will be that goes along with the particular proposal you receive.

  • Out of Pocket Fees-Travel, lodging, and any other out of pocket, miscellaneous fees can add up, thus it’s important to get a fee that is “fixed”, meaning it includes all of these expenses into the proposal. If not, then expect to pay anywhere from 10% to 20% more than the fee proposal itself because that’s what these costs can typically run in comparison to the underlying audit fee where these items are excluded.

-Some Commando Units responds to emergencies around the world and it is treated as Joint Rapid Reaction Force

Inquiry finds soldiers lost 'self control'
Serious mistakes and failings by officers and soldiers led to the deaths of 13 civilians on Bloody Sunday, the head of the British Army has said.

British Vs. American English

George Bernard Shaw famously said that the British and the Americans were "two nations separated by a common language".

Below are some examples of different usage in British and American English. You may already be aware of some of these differences, others may surprise you.

UK / US

Bank holiday / Legal holiday

Fortnight / Two weeks

Ordinary/extraordinary general meeting (of the shareholders) / Regular/special shareholders' meeting

(Memorandum and) articles of association / (Articles of incorporation and) bylaws

Profit and loss account / Income statement

Chairman / President/Chairman

Managing director / Chief Executive Officer

Estate agent / Realtor

Bureau de change / Currency exchange

Property / Real estate

Post code / Zip code

Prison / Penitentiary

Stand (for office) / Run (for office)

Unit trust / Mutual fund

Cheque / Check

Current account / Checking account

These are just a few examples. It is often worthwhile establishing whether your audience/the recipients of your document would prefer British or American terminology, as although many US terms may be understood by a British person and vice versa others may cause confusion and a need for time to be spent on further explanations/clarifications.

As well as the differences in vocabulary we just looked at, it is also possible to spot differences in grammar and country-specific structures in 'British' and 'American' documents. Often there are no hard and fast rules, it is simply a question of usage and a result of how the language has developed in each country.

Dates are one well-known example:

UK / US

29 September 2003 / September 29, 2003

29/9/2003 / 9/29/2003

Helpful Hint: It may be worth writing a date out in full, to avoid confusion:

3/9/2003 - 3 September 2003 or March 9, 2003 ?

The use of the comma in a list is also different. Note the extra comma in the US version of the following sentence:

UK:

The company has not issued any shares, bonds, stock options or securities this year.

US:

The company has not issued any shares, bonds, stock options, or securities this year.

The next table shows some grammatical differences:

UK / US

I will write to him next week / I will write him next week

It was nice to talk to you / It was nice to talk with you

I am meeting the union representatives tomorrow / I am meeting with the union representatives tomorrow

I live in Main Street / I live on Main Street

Let's go and see a film / Let's go see a movie

Different from/different to / Different than/different from

I have already eaten / I already ate

Look out of the window / Look out the window

River Thames / Hudson River

Another interesting example is the third person singular form 'one':

"one does what one is told to do".

This is still in use in the UK in formal language, but is very rarely heard in the US .

Familiar speech forms can also differ greatly. Whereas Americans might say "I sure could use a drink", the British would say "I really need a drink" or even "I'm dying for a drink".

You are much more likely to hear an American say "sure can" or "will do" when asked to do something, while a British person might say "yes, of course" or "leave it with me".

Although such usage may be specific to one country, in most cases it is readily understood in the other. Indeed, with today's increasingly 'global' culture, many British people are now using 'Americanisms', although the opposite is rarely true!

Lastly, words are often spelt differently in American and British English. For instance:

UK / US

-s organise / -z organize

-our favour, behaviour / -or favor, behavior

Mistakes can easily be avoided by selecting the appropriate language (British or American English) in your word processing software and running a spell-check. It sounds obvious, but is easy to forget!

Prohibition Schlitz poster for 'near beer' Question I have a beer poster that seems quite old. It pictures a nymph sitting next to a bottle of Schlitz beer. The label on the bottle says it is less than 1/2 percent alcohol. How old is this poster? Bowie knives are beautiful, useful tools. They can be the centerpiece of a knife display, or they can be utilitarian tools that help you accomplish numerous mundane tasks. If you find that you actually use your knife, it's quite possible that the blade will become soiled (it's expected, actually). However, in order to keep your knife in the best condition possible and to prolong its useful life, you need to know a bit more about care and...

Knife Short Hanger

Perhaps, like many people, you are not aware what happens to your credit score or rating if you have to short sell. Therefore, if you are considering this option, you must first get your mortgage lender to agree to accept the sale, which would be accepting less money than the amount that you owe on the mortgage loan. These kinds of sales became more and more common as the real estate crisis worsened, but it is still not an easy thing to accomplish. The idea behind doing a short sale of the property is to avoid having a foreclosure reported to the CRAs, which is far more damaging to your credit score and takes longer to fix. In addition, a short sale is generally done more quickly and...
