Themed Chess Sets - The Civil War Era

Whether you are purchasing a chess set for yourself, or gifting one to a particularly special person, you often need to think about what that person's hobbies and interests are. Everyone seems to have some hobby, or perhaps they enjoy a certain style of movie or literature you can turn into a unique gift idea. If you are trying to find the perfect gift for an American history buff that is a chess player, you may want to take a look at a themed chess sets, particularly the Civil War era.

This beautifully detailed game is a fine representation of the North and the South. The players are painted in the colors that represented both sides during that war, and the figures represent the two sides in dramatic detail. The Confederate Queen is a beautiful southern belle with her full skirt, simply ready for a ball. The Confederate King is a wonderful symbol of the personification of the confederate army dressed in a grey suit to match his Queen, his generals, and his soldiers. He appears ready to send his soldiers into battle. The soldiers dressed in their grey uniforms, carrying their arms at their sides prepared to face their foes. With golden bases to each figure, they cut a stunning collection all on their own. Even the Confederate flag is represented as a playing piece.

The other side of the match up is the Union army, commonly referred to as Yankees. With the dark blue uniforms, and each piece set on a silver-tone base, they each make a striking figure. Each figure shows the features in exquisite detail from the details on the uniforms to the arms they carry. The union flag still flies, bearing the stars and stripes of that time period.

Themed chess sets such as the Civil War Era set can inspire long history chats and children to read and learn more about American history. This skillfully created chess sets will make history come alive and show the thought you put into your gift giving. While enjoying a match up you may even find you have a different winner than what you read in the history books.

Colonial Williamsburg to host naturalization ceremony
The ceremony will make 100 people official U.S. citizens. WILLIAMSBURG—The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation will host a naturalization ceremony Monday for Flag Day.

An eye-catching title with a message, Bageant's book claims that many liberals, especially those on the east and west coasts, do not understand "beer-loving, Nascar-loving, church-going, gun-owning" Americans. Urban America: meet your working-class heartland neighbors.

While my intent in this article is not to be political, we must be aware of the terrain. Whatever our affiliation, Practical Spirituality includes the need to be a good citizen with enough accurate information to make intelligent decisions. This book shows another side of the political scene, and Bageant succeeds with humor and clarity. He wants us to listen to those the rural conservative citizens whose strong voice influences elections and with whom we have much in common.

Bageant wants us to be less judgmental and more inclusive in our views. The problems of the world, and there are significant ones, can only be solved with some consensus, not with judgmental exclusion. There is a need to compromise with others in order to work together. That is part of Bageant's message as well.

Bageant provides a view of "America's class war." The American "redneck" is part of us. Perhaps it is time to embrace that part. There is a class conflict, one we often ignore. A better future depends on our understanding that. We have something to learn from one another.

There is another side to this author, however. In the three years since his work was published, I have continued to read his material. Recently, in one of his blogs, he reminisces about how he feels something is missing in the failure of the reasonable Americans to win, following his beliefs in the book that we need consensus not judgment and that we all have much in common. What has happened? His answer, and one I agree with, is we have lost our spiritual direction and have let the materialistic rule. Bageant is not usually a spiritual writer, but his conclusion reflects his realization of what he feels is lacking in our society.

He talks about the "thing inside us...the consciousness that ebbs and flows between all external events;" this is spiritual, not religious. He describes that feeling when we sit silently and listen. This is a common and shared understanding. He recognizes that when we are quiet, we know. And the oppressors, whoever they may be in our society, are the ones who want to keep us busy, keep us worrying, otherwise we will have time to figure it all out. Meanwhile, he claims, we are left with our inner selves to keep us sane and going forward. That is our inner strength, not something we can buy or get from others.

Isn't it promising that many people are recognizing that it is our spiritual selves that can save the day and that the material world has taken us too far from ourselves? Bageant is one more voice of reason in the wilderness. Are we beginning to listen?

Colonial Jack

Capturing the city's cadence
Listen carefully as dawn breaks over The Battery. Squawking seabirds combine with the sounds of lapping waves on the rocks below to announce another day in paradise has begun.

The Magic Jack is basically a small box that needs to be plugged into the USB port of your computer to be able to make free calls to USA and Canada. The device uses VoIP technology and offers a host of benefits that others in the category don't. The company now plans to launch another service that [if it works as good as the Magic Jack] is bound to attract some frowns from the conventional cell phone service providers. A cell phone version of Magic Jack will soon flood the market. This device will cost just $40 and allow the user to make free calls without having to subscribe to a cell phone service. It's good to see that the price tag is at least lower than an average monthly cell phone bill, but the company plans to pull off signals from the conventional phone service providers and use that for the new device. It remains to be seen, whether, the cell phone companies will allow a competitor to feed on their signals and serve its own customers.

The biggest issue with this version of the Magic jack is that it would work only with AT&T and T-Mobile phones. It won't work with Verizon and Sprint phones. Does this suggest that there's a minor glitch in the device, that won't let it work with Verizon and Sprint? We won't know the answer until the problem is solved. It doesn't look like they have collaborated with AT&T and T-Mobile, so it's probably a glitch that is contributing towards this limited functionality. The device not only needs to be plugged into a computer, but also needs to be connected to the internet. This means that you'd not be able to make calls while taking a brisk walk in the garden. You need to be connected to an internet connected computer, to be able to use the device.

The new cell phone version will also allow users to make international calls for free, but it's yet not clear whether people from countries other than the U.S would be able to use this facility. A regular cell phone could burn a hole in your pocket in you are too much into international calls. The Magic Jack can save you those bucks.

The device is going to be available to the public sometime in May 2010. It has a mini antenna that will supposedly cover a three thousand foot range. The FCC and major cell phone carriers are yet to decide on whether the product is legal or not. The regular phone service providers spend millions on phone towers and signals; sucking them off without permission will surely draw some negative attention. If the verdict goes in favor of the Magic Jack, it'll for sure change the way people make and receive calls.

USA Track: Sprinter’s hubby definitely knows how to pick ’em Sanya Richards-Ross, a sprinter, is among the favorites at this week’s USA Track and Field Championships. Aaron Ross is preparing for fourth season as a defensive back for the New York Giants. The idea of starting a home business seems a bit defeatist. In a society when people equate success with big corporation, starting a home based business does not seemed to be something to be proud of. Home business seems to be the domain of people that can not make it in the corporate world. However, the statistics I am going to give will prove this common perception is wrong. If you do a research with the Small Business Administration...
