Let's not forget the Exxon Valdez oil disaster that had more than 40 million liters of crude oil draining from a wrecked oil tanker in its attempt to reach Long Beach California. In 2007, the oil spill at Francisco Bay poured 58000 gallons of oil in the bay covering birds and other wildlife.

Although the American Government has declared this a National disaster; they are paying close attention to major threats to wildlife, fisheries and tourism. We really need to treat this as an environmental risk that affects us all. These spills carry toxic material and damage to coastal habitats and an obstruction to marine life.

As declared by the US Government, this spill could continue as much as ninety days. If this happens as much as four States could be affected. Florida, with its beaches known to inhabit marine life will see devastation beyond comprehension.

With all these oil spills, shouldn't we ask the question, is there a need to continue with offshore drilling and are there alternatives such as wind and solar technology? The US Government needs to start looking into allocating funds towards this effort. In the attempt to extract oil from well below the ocean floor this is upsetting our marine and deep sea life and as well posses a risk to future oil spills. With offshore drilling accounting for at least 30 percent of the total US oil production their reliance on it is becoming quite evident. Americans uses about 8 billion barrels of oil per year and it's projected that at least 1000 barrels will spill in the Gulf of Mexico over the next 40 years.

Canada is keeping close watch in order to learn from the mismanagement of this disaster. Although Canadian provinces such as Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as Nova Scotia already has been taking measures to prevent these oil spill disasters. With Canada's polar arctic there is much at stake.

We are all affected by the need for our marine and wild life. We cannot live without them because they contribute to our own existence. If we can start to harness the powers of wind, solar and alternative energy we could do away with the need for offshore drilling that is upsetting our ecosystem.

We need to prevent disasters from happening year after year. There are many things each of us can do to contribute to prevent these unnecessary disasters. We can volunteer, write, as well as advocate and educate ourselves to learning about ways to help the Government harness these powers to eliminate offshore drilling.

HUFFPOST HILL - JUNE 23RD, 2010
What's Your Reaction? Now THAT was an interesting day. Shortly after the U.S. put Algeria away with a last-minute goal from Landon Donovan, Barack Obama put Stanley McChrystal away, replacing him with David Pretraeus.

The Anatomy of a Chef Knife

The Anatomy of a Chef Knife

Contrary to what most cooks think, a Chef Knife is not just a big knife with a big blade.

A good Chef Knife is a precision tool which allows you to do almost any job in the kitchen.

In this article I will break down the anatomy of the Sakura 8" Chef Knife.

It is the knife I use. Probably one of the best I ever had.

It is a Japanese 8" Chef knife. Hand forged in VG-10 Carbon Steel metal. Folded 67 times.

A: The Chef Knife Tip: Right at the end of the blade. It is used to cut through onions, shallots, and other vegetables to make cuts for cubes or strips. May also be used to cut strips through meat or boning.

Most chefs will tell you never to use the knife tip for anything else, but it will easily open plastic or paper bags.

B: The Chef Knife Cutting Edge: Used for long slice cuts through meat fruit or vegetables. It is the third most used part of the knife.

C: The Chef Knife Heel: These are the last two inches closest to the Bolster. It is the most used part of the chef knife. Used for dicing or slicing in a forward wave motion, and hard cutting of bones or tendons.

Also it is the right place for holding between your forefinger and thumb for best grip of the chef knife.

D: The Chef Knife Back: Mainly the part of the blade that will give you the power to use the knife. It is between 2.5 and 3 inches wide in a quality chef knife.

Can be used for breaking ice, or forced blows.

E: The Chef Knife Bolster: It is the metal part between the blade and the handle.

It usually extends all the way down to the bottom of the blade.

This allows for two uses: It will protect your fingers from sliding under the blade. But more importantly, it is a heavy chunk of metal the gives balance to the whole chef knife making it effortlessly usable for long periods of time.

F: The Chef Knife Tang: The Tang is the back end of the blade. Is a good chef knife it extends all the way to the back of the handle giving the chef knife strength and stability.

G: The Rivet: A metal pin forged into the Handle and through the Tang to hold them together.

H: The Chef Knife Butt: The back end of the chef knife. Helps grip the knife comfortably, but can also, in good quality chef knives, be used as a hammer.

This was a quick break down of the anatomy of a chef knife.

Preview: Deus Ex: Human Revolution
We're still a good long way away from the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution , so keep in mind that it's hard to say if what I saw inside Square-Enix is truly representative of what we'll get when the game finally releases. But the small sliver of combat and social puzzle solving I saw looked extremely promising for series stalwarts and newcomers alike. Gallery: Deus Ex: Human Revolution ...

Many of today's organizations represent the global society we currently live in. Many of these Organizations could incur communication problems, because of a lack of basic cultural understanding.

What are the six ways can we can effectively combat communication failure?

1. Simplifying Language

Even if different cultures can speak one language, their understanding of the language can be misinterpreted. In many cultures communication is spoken rather than written, and based on how we interact with each other. Simplifying explanations, and using visual images like videos, and photographs, could cut down any communication difficulties.

2. Fairness

The concept of fairness and equality is common in most societies, but all societies deal with this concept differently. All Employees may want to be accepted, and fairly treated, but often misunderstandings arise on how this concept is communicated.

Those used to a more structured authoritarian background, may be confused when instructions are dealt with in a casual manner, whilst people used to working in a more open system resent being ordered instead of asked- leading to communication failure, and eventual resentment.

3. Cutting Down on Code Noise

Imagine the same email being sent from person to person, this simple email could be interpreted differently, leading to communication failure at its worse. The use of jargon could even confuse but make the message sound different, creating complete communication failure.

4. Information Retention

There is a "big picture," and then a series of "smaller pictures," within the big picture. As a message is sent around an organization, it often reaches those who only know the "smaller picture," and many people only see how it affects them- not the whole organization. This could lead to eventual information blockage, and even a complete misinterpretation of the original message.

5. Perceptual factors

One fault many people have is stereotyping, and most of us are guilty at one time or another of having a fixed view on people. In some societies the habits of the so-called "uneducated" may be viewed in a different light.Bob the builder may have great ideas in some societies, but in others he would be considered too uneducated to know anything.

Perceptual factors are important in organizations. A more liberal manager could fail in a conservative environment, because of a simple habit, or accent. The more narrow-minded the environment, the more it is open to communication failure. The messenger has to be accepted, and respected, otherwise the message no matter how informative, and correct- could be ignored, or even seen as an insult.

6. "Crabology"

Some people simply do not like the ideas of others getting ahead. Imagine a bucket of crabs, one tries to crawl out the bucket, but the rest of the crabs always pull it back down. This can happen in organizations, were some groups are in their comfort zone, and see as a threat an idea or a person who is getting on. Communications from that person or section, could be deliberately ignored, or even fought against, pulling that person down down to their level.

Multi-Cultural workplaces are going to be increasingly common in today's brave new World. Our governments are already multi-cultural, as are many corporations that survived the economic crisis. Understanding basic human nature, perceptual factors and the way different groups communicate, is the key to running a successful, innovative organization today.

Discover how to survive and thrive in a changing economy.

Archery and Combat Archery

Archery and Combat Archery :

Combat Archery is probably one of the most widely used forms of Archery next to hunting for the Archer. It has proven itself time and time again. To show it's face in times when it had to be used. It has saved civilizations and brought devastation upon the loser, Victory for the predecessor. As we know of combat Archery today, It is of a competition style more than what it is to kill another human. But when we look at ancient combat archery this is usually where we look at it from.

By todays standards, The below example would be more of what modern combat Archery has become.:

Combat archery involves the use of light draw weight (thirty pound maximum or fifty pounds with special oversize arrows) bows and specially constructed arrows. Special protection is worn to help prevent injuries. It consists of several types of combat, from individual duels between lights to full scale field or woods battles involving both heavies and lights. All participants are required to be familiar with and follow the Rules of the List and SCA and West kingdom heavy and light combat rules.

Combat archery first began in the SCA in the Kingdom of the West at the Island War in 1967. The arrows were eighteen inch long green stained bamboo garden stakes. There was no fletching and the blunt heads were made of one inch thick foam rubber secured with white first-aid tape and were about one to one and a half inches wide. There was no maximum weight limit for the bows, because the short arrows kept the draw and power down. The archers were not required to wear any face protection.

In missile combat, as in heavy, hits are counted on a honor system. The fighter being hit decides how to count the blow. The main difference is that a hit to a heavy fighter from the impact weapon of a heavy fighter must strike with sufficient force to count. While a hit from an arrow does not require a minimum impact to count. It counts no matter how light the impact as long as it is not a glancing hit. This is because bows strong enough and arrows hard enough to be felt in Armour or padding at sixty yards or more, would be highly unsafe at our minimum range of five yards.

Arrow hits to the head or torso count as kills. Hits to the arms or legs cause only the loss of that limb. Hits to the hand or below the knee are not counted. In a mixed battle it is safer to have dead lights leave the field, rather than remain upon it and be tread upon by live heavies.
