What is the Magic in Lee Trevino's Golf Swing?

Lee Trevino certainly didn't take the traditional route to becoming a great PGA Tour Golfer. The "Merry Mex" did not grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth so he had to learn golf the hard way...Lee Trevino found his swing in the Mexican dirt with long and hard practice sessions.

Lee certainly has a great understanding of the golf swing. His golf swing is far from classic as he reroutes his golf club on the way down...not a conventional golf swing to say the least. One thing Lee Trevino understands very well is how the golf ball responds to the club face at impact....which is the only thing the golf ball cares about. Do you think the golf ball cares about how your swing looks? All it knows is what is happening at impact.

When I finally figured out what Lee Trevino was talking about it made a tremendous impact on how solidly I began to strike the ball. I know this is a clich?nd you probably have heard it a million times, you must hit down on the golf ball to make it go up! Do you know what is really happening when a golf ball is well struck at impact? It took me 8 years before I figured this out...and it was Lee who finally explained it to me.

For some reason most recreational golfers feel they need to help the golf ball go up by flipping their hands at impact...if there ever was a move in the golf swing that robs you of power, this is it. Lee Trevino says the key to making solid contact with the golf ball is to visualize the club face as being the back of your left hand as you swing the club. On the down swing he imagines "trapping" the back of his left hand into the back of the ball...an incredibly powerful move that keeps the golf club at a right angle with the left arm deep into the downswing. "Hit the back of the ball with the back of the left hand" is Lee's mantra. World famous golf swing guru Butch Harmon says he likes to feel like he has Bethlehem Steel in his left wrist at impact.

So what happens to the golf ball at impact when it is struck correctly? When you swing down on the ball at impact the golf ball actually spins up the club face to the top grooves. This is what the grooves in the club face are for...this is what gives the golf ball spin. How do you think pro golfers stop the ball on a dime on the green? They are using more of the grooves on the club face than amateurs. Golfers who flip the club face at impact are only utilizing the bottom grooves on the club face...the result; a weak, flat trajectory with little spin...Their left wrist has completely broken down at impact.

Watch the golf pros left wrist at impact...most of them have a bowed left wrist at impact...the opposite of the golfers who flip at the ball where the left wrist has broken down. This bowed left wrist allows a late powerful release into the golf ball...the secret to tremendous power off the tee. Next time you go to the range, think "Back of Left Wrist Into Back of Ball" as you start your downswing. This mental image forces you to swing from the inside and retain the release deep into the downswing. You will notice your golf ball has a much more flatter, penetrating ball flight. Your golf ball will have a higher trajectory and it will go a lot further.

Try it...it works!

Hit 'em Long and Straight!

Enfield Rifle Bayonet

In the ever-growing worldwide popularity of the sport of Airsoft, no player has captured the imagination of war gamers more than the character known as the Airsoft "SNIPER".

Often referred to as the Lone Wolf or Rogue of Airsofting, the Sniper is the gamer who wants to set himself up in the perfect ambush position and than take out his opponents with long range speed and accuracy.

The weapon of choice for this exciting player is the popular Airsoft Sniper Rifle. Of all the available Airsoft guns, the Airsoft Sniper Rifle is best suited for this type of player. Big and somewhat cumbersome, the Airsoft Sniper Rifle is designed for long range shooting with high velocity. These Airsoft guns are capable of creating some of the highest pellet velocities in the entire industry. These rifles are also noted for delivering heightened accuracy. The Sniper Rifle has an average length of around 42 inches (1070mm), with a firing velocity that approaches roughly 390ft/sec. These guns are usually powered by a bolt-action spring instead of an electric motor or gas. This makes the rifle advantageous in combat due to the quietness of its firing mechanism as compared to the much louder discharge of other power sources. The quiet bolt-action spring allows the shooter the ability to surprise other players more easily.

Due to their large length, the Sniper Rifle functions more accurately when used in a stationary position, usually mounted on a bipod. Although big in size, they are primarily designed to be used by a gamer who is set up in one spot. Because of its hefty size, these Airsoft guns are difficult to wield in close quarter situations. To alleviate this problem some rifles come with folding or removable stocks.

Along with a bipod, other important accessories for the Lone Wolf Airsoft Sniper and his rifle would include a laser scope. The advanced laser scope gives the shooter his best chance for optimal long-range accuracy. Being on the move for better ambush locations often necessitates the need for a quality shoulder harness to help in transporting the rifle. A large hi-cap magazine that holds a minimum of thirty bbs is also a necessary ingredient in prolonging the battle life of the gallant Airsoft Sniper.

One of the more popular Airsoft Sniper Rifle model lines is the Super 9 series. Designed after the Belgian police rifle with the customary windows in the stock, the Super 9 series has an extremely realistic look. The Super 9 series Airsoft guns cost around 100 U.S. dollars without any upgrades. It is important to keep in mind from a cost perspective that in order for the Super 9 to be effective in a serious Airsoft war game such as the Mil-Sim, it will require a number of the significant upgrades already mentioned. This will also increase the financial investment.

There are many exciting types of Airsoft guns available to all Airssoft enthusiasts and veteran war game players. But to those gamers who prefer the sniper's thrill of stealth and surprise, no gun can match the exciting Airsoft Sniper Rifle.

Obituaries - June 18, 2010
Donald J. Bainton, 79, Korean War veteran, Greenwich resident and former president of Continental Can Company , died peacefully on June 13, 2010 in Boca Raton, Fla.

When you are on your journey of how to play bass, in my opinion one of the key ways of making progress is to learn challenging lines by bass players you like and admire (which are not necessarily the same thing). Geddy Lee has anchored the bottom end of Canadian power trio Rush for over 35 years now and has produced consistently inventive and demanding bass lines in that period. Here are 5 of them.

1) YYZ

This was originally featured on the Moving Pictures album - which many people think was the highlight of Rush's career. YYZ is an instrumental tune - if you can learn this and reproduce it flawlessly at the tune's performance tempo you can pat yourself on the back, your bass playing is obviously moving in the right direction. This tune has got everything, short solo sections, unison riffs, some laid back grooving and more. 4 minutes of magic.

2. Free Will

For the bulk of the tune the bass line is pretty straightforward - although there are lots of different time signatures to contend with. That all changes with the guitar solo and the lead up to it. What Geddy plays here is almost like they are from another tune - there are 28 bars of 12:8 mayhem that form a great study just on their own.

3. 2112

This is one of my favourite Rush tunes of all time. Learning to play the entire 15 minutes or so of the piece is a masterclass in memory and endurance. Some of the rockier sections of the tune also contain some good material for further development and study.

4. La Villa Strangiato

La Villa Strangiato first appeared on the Hemispheres album - and although that album received general critical acclaim I remember that at the time this tune was considered a bit of an oddity. Over time however it's become a firm fan favourite - and you should definitely check it out. The virtuosity on display from all of the members of Rush is jaw dropping.

5. Malignant Narcisism

This is from the Snakes & Arrows CD and is a short instrumental. The bass line is a fast, hypnotic sounding line that will test your right hand chops to the max.

Summary

Over the course of Rush's career Geddy lee has produced many great bass performances. As well as the 5 listed above there's a wealth of great bass lines in the early Rush catalogue that you could learn and analyze and incorporate into your own playing. The All The World's A Stage live album is in my opinion a great place to sample Geddy's earlier works.

Going for a spin back in time
A CHERISHED annual test for veterans of the road reaches a landmark of its own tomorrow.

This is the latest (April 2008) Jack Reacher thriller and just as in the previous eleven, Lee Child has written an easy to get into thriller, and one that will have you busting a gut to get through.

There is no doubt there is an element of "Been here before - read this before" to this one, but as someone else wrote, Lee Child could not write a bad book if he tried.

Two towns in Middle America, Hope and Despair, Hope's good, Despair is decidedly odd, and of course Jack cannot depart without investigating why. Throw in the usual pretty woman, this time the policewoman herself, and if you are an avid Jack Reacher reader, you will get the picture.

So it starts, and the writer begins spinning his web.

I admire greatly how every single fact mentioned is later carefully entwined into the story. Mister Child is a very good writer indeed, and one to be studied closely by anyone aspiring to progress as a thriller-type writer.

I know for a fact that Lee Child is responsible for bringing a whole host of new readers to the reading watering hole with this series of books, and anyone who can persuade non-readers to become so, is fine in my book.

If you have read the other Reacher novels I am sure you will like this one too. If you haven't, may be there are better ones out there that you might prefer to begin with, but hey, who cares, once you start reading one, you will want to read more. Either way, this is still a cracking read and money well spent.

David Carter's new novel "The Fish Catcher" tells the story of a group of children evacuated from London during World War II to escape the blitz bombing. It turns into a murder mystery and has been well reviewed. You can check out the first chapter on David's website at http://www.davidcarter.eu

Why North Americans Hire British Voice Talents

When you think of Britain and the British, images of pomp, chivalry, royalty, tradition, authenticity, and power come to mind. To some, the UK musters romance, dignity and prestige, reminiscent of Jane Austen novels or the strength, bluntness and grit of a book by Charles Dickens. For others, perhaps it's fashion, cosmopolitan airs, trend setting ways, stoicism, and dry wit. Whatever their reasons, thousands of companies in Canada and the US are strategically hiring voices from across the pond to represent their corporate images.

Why is that? Let's look at some of the reasons why some companies find British voice talent more attractive to sell their product or service. British voices are in the mainstream and in most cases are respected for their perceived intelligence and vocal eloquence.

North Americans have always had a love affair with the British. Starting in the early days of settlement in the New World and confederation of both the United States of America and Canada, the British have played a major role in the development of the land and establishment of policy, culture, government and education.

The British, among other nations, principally the French, gave us a heritage and shared connections with trading partners. Tens of thousands of these brave people opted to stay in this new found land to nurture, protect, and establish their own communities.

All loyalties aside, another aspect that influences people to hire a British voice talent is that many high profile celebrities in Hollywood are from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. If you stopped to think, you could likely name at least 20 people who hail from the UK in the movies.

To illustrate, Scotland has given us Russell Waters, Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor, and Dee Hepburn. Ireland has yielded Peter O'Toole, Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, and Colin Farrell. Wales has given us Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ioan Gruffudd, Richard Burton, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Christian Bale. England, perhaps the most generous of them all for celebrities, produced greats over the decades like Sir Laurence Olivier, Dame Julie Andrews, Dame Judi Dench, John Cleese, Helena Bonham-Carter, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and more.

A statistic published on January 27th, 2007 in a British newspaper states that there are currently 678,000 landed immigrants from Britain living in the United States today. This is merely a conservative estimate.

In the most recent US Census (2000), there were 824,000 citizens of British birth living in the United States, the majority of which prefer to live outside of large cities scattered throughout the country.

The article also reported that a fifth of all British people who live in the United States are living in the state of California with only a slight margin living in metropolitan Los Angeles and the surrounding area. Additionally, most British people living in America have American spouses. That's quite a number, which makes even more of a case for British talent in the Americas. People hear their lilting, distinguished accents and find them comforting and pleasing not to mention sophisticated.

Surely if there are that many people living in the US and Canada, some of them are personalities who are in the media or use their voice to make a living. Those individuals are seeking work opportunities and promoting their British voices as an asset and differentiator, offering refinement and exotic appeal.

To sum up, here are the key reasons why people opt to hire British voices in North America:

- Elevate their company status
- Help connect with people on an intellectual level
- Give perceived refinement to a product or service
- Tap into the sentimentality of people of British heritage
- Differentiate themselves from standard North American branding
- Present listeners with subtle yet persuasive marketing

British voice-overs and what they embody are very powerful without seeming salesy. They establish and engage. British voice-overs can be elegant, heroic, strong, graceful, jovial, quaint, condescending, posh, school masterly, didactic, forceful, and influential among other adjectives.

The dialects in Britain are numerous with each nook and cranny possessing their own twist on the Queen's English. If you went from one end of the nations capital to the other, you will be exposed to several completely different dialects; such is life in the bustling city of London.

While it is true that other accents embody those attributes, somehow (likely due to shared heritage and the entertainment industry), the British manage to pull them off with a more universal style, making them citizens of the world as well as the lands from which they came.
