Modified biosensors improve early cancer diagnosis
Imec has found a way to improve the biosensors used for the early diagnosis of cancer using nanotechnology.

Let's face it as a society we really don't take the idea of women and heart disease all that seriously. After all isn't a heart attack or stroke only something men have to worry about? Doesn't estrogen protect women from this silent killer? Isn't cancer a bigger threat to women than heart disease? All of these question seem logical but the fact of the matter is none of them are true. The truth about women and heart disease or stroke is that in America twice as many women die of these two cardiovascular disorders than from all forms of cancer, including breast cancer.

So identifying the possible factors that increase the chances of a women having a heart attack or stroke should to be identified, and either modified or eliminated. Let's take a few minutes to run through five risk factors that can be modified, treated or managed wit h lifestyle modification and/or medication if needed.

When it comes to women and heart disease smoking is not cool.

While you can't change your family history, gender, the aging process, or a previous history of heart attack or stroke you can certainly say no to tobacco. Women who smoke, or for that matter inhale large amounts of second hand smoke, are at increased risk for ischemic stroke and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Studies show birth control pills only make matters worse, increasing a smokers risk of cardiovascular disease substantially.

High blood cholesterol is not good for your heart.

Up until the age of 55 women have some natural protection against arterial plaque deposits but after that it is all downhill, with men and women having virtually identical chances of dying of a heart attack by the age of 62. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) raise the risk of heart attack. High levels of good cholesterol (HDL) lower the risk of heart disease. Research seems to suggest that low levels of good cholesterol seems to a stronger risk factor in women than men.

Be aware to the risks of high blood pressure

High blood pressure in women increases their chances of having a heart attack. But perhaps more importantly it is the most important risk factor for stroke. Obesity, a family history of high blood pressure, pregnancy, and certain types of birth control pills are the biggest threats to a woman developing high blood pressure. It is also important to point out that African American women are the highest risk demographic.

Inactivity will literally kill you.

Heart disease is twice as likely to occur in those who are inactive than those who stay active. Being inactive can also lead to weight gain which in turn leads to high blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes, and an increased risk of heart attack. A recent study showed that 38 percent of heart attack victims were inactive or underactive.

Obesity and being overweight were great in 16 century.

Yes, what a difference a few centuries can make! Today we know that having too much fat, especially when is causes an expanding waistline, puts a women at risk for many health problems including high cholesterol, high triglycerides, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

In summary, women and heart disease and stoke is a serious problem but by taking steps to stay active, consuming a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and saying no to tobacco you can greatly reduce your chances of become a heart attack or stroke victim. German Shepherds are among the most popular and smartest dog breeds in the United States - and for good reason. Not only are they extremely intelligent, but they make both excellent work and family dogs. They are versatile enough to be both protective and extremely loyal. They can be ferocious while working as police K9s, helping to capture criminals. And yet, a working GSD will come home to play with children in their family, instinctively sensing when and how to act in each situation.

The history of the German Shepherd breed goes back to 1889 at a dog show in Germany. Even then, the dog that became the first GSD, displayed the grace, power, endurance and strength that are still integral to the breed. The first German Shepherd was named Horand Von Grafrath (renamed from is original name, Hektor Linksrhein). Back then, the beauty of the dog was secondary to traits such as intelligence and the ability to be a good working dog or servant for its owners.

While the founder of the breed, Captain Max von Stephanitz, did not place a high emphasis on appearance, today's German Shepherds are considered among the best looking dogs in the world. In addition to their innately intelligent eyes, their bodies are distinguished by muscular front legs and shoulders, thick thighs and well proportioned legs topped by strong chests. The thickness of the coat can vary greatly, including rough or long rough-coated as well as long-haired. Coat color is often mixed, including black, tan and sable mixtures.

There are also completely black German Shepherds, always a stunning sight. Some coat colors are considered faulty, according to the German Shepherd breed standard. These include blue, white and liver colors, although White German Shepherds are now considered a separate breed (the American White Shepherd).

If you are considering adding a German Shepherd to your family, you need to be aware of the dog's needs as well as the ideal home or work environment. They grow very quickly so a small pup can turn out to be a large dog in a relatively short time. They can live to be between 10 and 13 years old, so owners need to be committed to a dog that will be a part of the family for a decade or more. It is not ideal to leave a GSD alone for a long period of time as they love to be close to their owners, whether at work or home. Be very careful about putting this breed in an apartment, as it may be forbidden by the landlord and can result in an increase in insurance rates.

Because they consider their families to be part of their pack, they have a strong protective instinct. This means they can be suspicious of strangers. While this makes them excellent for protection and as watch dogs, obedience training is vital to make sure your dog can be controlled when necessary. Proper training of the breed depends on positive reinforcement. They are very sensitive to improper training and angry words or other methods can have negative results. Respect the dog's innate intelligence and desire to please and realize that the German Shepherd can be sensitive to other methods.

When buying a German Shepherd, always avoid puppy mills. Make sure the breeder has a solid reputation among lovers of the breed. Buying from puppy mills or backyard breeders can result in dogs which have been traumatized, are shy and prone to fear biting. Pet stores are also undesirable when choosing where to buy this breed. However, shelters and rescue groups may have quality dogs which need good homes and they may be able to match you to the right German Shepherd for you.

The popularity of the breed seems to be increasing year by year, especially after a GSD was named Best in Show at Westminster. Their winning personalities seem to charm those who see them. If you want a loyal, loving and versatile dog, a German Shepherd could be the ideal choice.

Lets' take a look a 4 ways on how to read chord pictures and diagrams properly.

1. Find what style of chord picture you like: There are so many different ways to demonstrate how a chord is played. Some chord manuals use real life pictures, some are drawings, and thanks to modern technology, some combine both real life guitar pictures with digital imprints of where your fingers are to be placed on your instrument.

2. Determine which way the chord picture is facing: There are three primary ways that a chord can be demonstrated by picture. The first way is by having the guitar positioned as if you are facing another guitar player. The second way is by having the chord picture look as if you are looking down on top of your fret board. The third way is to have the chord picture vertically. Once you determine which angle the chord picture is drawn, make sure that your string fingering corresponds with the chord picture. I.e. Make sure if your placing your finger on the 2nd fret, 1st string, that the picture you are looking at is really implying the 2nd fret, 1st string.

3. Your fingers may not line up exactly the way the picture is shown: Depending on what kind of picture or diagram is used, your fingers may not exactly line up with the diagram given. A good example of this is when you learn the A major chord. Most chord diagrams have the A major chord finger placements all nice and neat in a row. Visually this is good for the guitar player to see. However, when actually playing the A major chord, you will soon find out that where your fingers end up on the frets board are much different than the nicely designed chord diagram.

4. Make sure you practice your chords without looking at the picture: As you are learning your guitar chords by utilizing chord pictures and diagrams, make sure that you begin to memorize your guitar chords as soon as possible. It can be very easy to want to always refer to your chord chart when practicing guitar. The easiest way to break the habit of always looking at your chord chat is to look at the chart, and then turn your chord manual over and try playing the chord to the best ability possible by memory. Turn the chord manual over, and then compare your left hand fingering to the diagram you are looking at.
