Classical Hollywood Cinema

Classical Hollywood Cinema is the time period of the film industry that began with the movie release of "The Birth of a Nation." It incorporates both the Silent Era and Studio Era of filmmaking. Unique to Classical Cinema, the mode of production during this timeframe encouraged film directors to view their work from the perspective of an employee of the studios rather than as auteurists who exercised creative control over their works with an individual film style. The Classical Cinema time period ended in the 1960s when the motion picture industry ushered in a new Post-Classical film style by auteurist film directors with the release of "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967) as well as other landmark films of that decade.

Silent Era

The Silent Era is commonly referred to as the "Age of the Silver Screen" from 1917 to 1928. During this time period, there was no sound or synchronized speech accompanying the character's images being projected on the movie screen. To accommodate for the lack of sound, on-screen captions were utilized to emphasize important points and dialogue in the story. Oftentimes, the projection of silent films onto the big screen was accompanied by live instrumental music (pianist, organist, or even a large orchestra). The standard stylistic elements fundamental to classical Hollywood silent filmmaking were implemented through the Silent Era's Director-Unit System. This system of filmmaking included a fully integrated work force with a set of employees that had precise areas of responsibility under the leadership of the film director.

Studio Era

The Studio Era was a period in film history that started after the end of the Silent Era (1927/1928) with the release of "Jazz Singer", the first full length film that contained talking sequences in it. The advent of the Studio Era also marked the beginning of the "Golden Age of Hollywood." The contribution of Irving Thalberg was significant in development of Hollywood's Central Producer System during the Studio Era while he was Chief of Production at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). In fact, the successful transition of classical Hollywood film production style from the Silent Era's Director-Unit System to the Studio Era's Central Producer System at MGM took place under Thalberg's leadership. His ability to produce a quality film with aesthetic value was demonstrated through his balanced view of budgetary controls, script and story development, and use of the "star system" in the successful movie "Grand Hotel."

Intrinsic to the studio system, the marketing strategies for motion pictures utilized by the major Hollywood film studios was rather straightforward and uncomplicated because the studios obtained most of their money from theater box office ticket sales throughout America. At that time, there were five major studios that owned a production studio, distribution arm, contracts with actors and technical support personnel, as well as a theater chain. These studios were known as the "Big Five" and included Warner Brothers, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century-Fox, Radio-Keith-Orpheum (RKO), and Loew's, Inc. (owner of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/MGM). Their revenues came from monies paid by the theaters for renting films from the studios. Since the "Big Five" studios controlled almost every theater throughout America, they received the majority of their money from box office ticket sales.

To further extend their power over the movie houses throughout America, these studios took steps to control almost all of the smaller independently owned theaters, as well. Through the contracting process of "block booking", theater owners were required to show a block of films (typically in blocks of ten) at their movie house. If the independently owned theaters did not agree to purchase a block of films from a studio, they received no films from the studio at all. Thus, during the Studio Era, the Hollywood film industry was tightly controlled by the powerful studio moguls. However, in 1948, a federal court case outlawed block booking. The United States Supreme Court ruled that the vertical integration of the majors violated federal anti-trust laws and ordered the "Big Five" companies to divest themselves of their theaters over a five-year period. This decision basically brought the studio system era to a close by 1954.

Making the Case for Case Studies

Brochures and other promotional materials have their place in the sales process, but for building relationships that win the hearts and minds of prospects, try case studies – they are much more effective because they offer quantifiable success stories told from the perspective of current satisfied customers.

In a cluttered, “me too” market place, prospects require vendors to establish themselves as credible experts before they take them seriously – much less take their calls or return their e-mail solicitations.  One of the best ways to demonstrate credibility is through case studies co-developed with existing customers.  These become de facto letters of reference and strong referrals.

While sales sheets are ideal for highlighting specific services or products, case studies allow businesses to tell a compelling story that resonates with prospects without being overly promotional.  Case studies also shift the focus from “it’s all about me and my company” to something that is more educational in tone and content – and they highlight tangible situations prospects can relate to. This subtle approach is typically more effective and leads to a deeper connection with potential customers than “in-your-face” ads and brochures.

Today’s prospects want documented proof that your company has brought success to businesses similar to their own. Case studies create parallels in the minds of your prospects between their own business needs and those of similar customers you’ve already successfully served. Below are some ways you can use case studies to get in the door with potential customers:

Showcase Your Industry-specific Expertise

Make sure to profile customer success stories that are relevant to your current prospect pool.  If you are targeting businesses in the banking industry, develop a case study with a customer in this sector.  The closer to home you can make these anecdotes; the more effective they will be at persuading your prospects that you would be a strong business partner.

Demonstrate That You Keep Good Company

By highlighting well-known customers, you can significantly enhance your company’s credibility. Ideally, choose customers with recognizable names and strong reputations —businesses that your prospects may want to emulate. In pairing your company’s name with proven industry leaders, your company becomes a winner by association. If recognizable companies are not yet among your customer base, than highlight quantifiable success stories that illustrate your company’s value and strengths.

Speak Your Prospects’ Language

Case studies are “been there, done that, got the results” tales of exactly why your company is a good fit. They allow you to resonate with your prospects by speaking to them in their language and from their perspective. For this reason, the customers you choose to feature should be as similar to your prospects as possible.

Profile successes of current customers who are of a similar size organization as your prospects (i.e. small business, middle market or enterprise); espouse similar objectives as your prospects (i.e. cost savings, revenue generation, efficiencies); operate in the same or similar industries as your prospects; and face similar challenges as your prospects.

Focus on Your Prospects’ Business Goals

Prior to writing case studies, think carefully about your prospects’ needs and business objectives. This will enable you to speak directly to those challenges.

Case studies can demonstrate your company’s expertise in specific service areas; meeting specific industry regulations (i.e. HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley or Gramm-Leach-Bliley); and forging business partnerships that offer greater, more lasting benefits than the traditional vendor relationship.

Quantify the Successes You Create

It’s not enough to say that your company has helped a business be more successful. Truly effective case studies include quantifiable metrics and measurable results, such as new revenue generate; amount of sales increased; faster time to market; cost savings achieved; operational savings or efficiencies realized; and new markets penetrated.

Extend the Value of Your Case Studies

To reach as many prospects as possible, extend the value and shelf life of case studies by leveraging them in a multitude of formats. This can include posting them on your company’s Web site to highlight quantifiable customer successes; including quotes or results in brochures, sales sheets and other marketing collateral; offering them as tangible examples of your work in proposals; fulfilling reference requests with a case study and contact information; using them to enhance award applications; and submitting them to local newspapers and trade magazines for extra exposure.

Satisfied customers are your strongest asset in winning new business. Use your company’s past successes to generate new leads. Before your sales staff calls on a prospect, position your company to be viewed as the expert in its field. Give your prospects real-world examples of how a partnership with your company is the quickest route to success—give them a case study.

A Leather Pen Case is a Tool for Sincere Readers

When you go out to buy a pen holder, a leather pen case or a pen display case, you will find a variety of these tools in the bazaar. Whatever you choose to purchase, your pen collection will then have its personal space. A leather pen case presents a modish and a comfy protection to your most cherished and priceless writing instruments. There is a plethora of manufacturing companies and individuals who totally understand the need of properly taking care of writing tools.

They understand what it is to shield those priceless pens from the harms and pressures of even the mildest catastrophes. Therefore they provide you with the leather pen case or a pen display case, which ensures a dependable breathing space.. The leather pen cases are usually crafted from the finest leathers – Italian or Indian. The leather is available in many rich tones.

A pen display case has a glass top which exhibits the best of your collections. The lid can be handcrafted or made with machines. The handcrafted lid may have designer frills and will look more elegant than the one which is robotically manufactured. However, the machine made pen display case will have more finesse in its finish. The handcrafted pen display cases will comprise of an heirloom finish. Moreover they are more expensive than their machine made counterparts.

The wood used in the manufacturing of wooden pen display case is always kiln dried. This is to ensure that warps and splits are removed from the final product. The premium quality of a supreme wooden pen display case is that it is made out of a single piece of wood. This kind of creation ensures that the wood used for the entire pen case shows similar surface grains and a kind of harmony is set. Brass is used for the joints to make certain that the pen display case is durable and strong.

It is not necessary that the pen display case has an internal lining of suede or velvet. The handcrafted pen display cases which are the work of local artisans will typically come under this category. However, some of them will have an internal cushioning of suede. It is important to provide an inbuilt cushioning for the pens, otherwise the fundamental idea of protection is not met with. A pen display case which does not meet this criterion is good for show purposes only.

A leather pen case is ideal to keep safe your Pelican, Mont Blanc or Waterman collection. Any damage to such a beautiful collection hurts and it’s not for nothing that so many people are interested in such produts. The use of a leather pen case will keep any problems at bay. Moreover, it is a very thoughtful and a great and gift idea to a student, journalist or a writer.

Real men take delivery
James Taylor was by his wife's side in the operating room when his son, Andrew, was born via Caesarean section in 2009.And he was by his wife's side earlier this month, when their daughter, Grace, came into the world.Taylor, of Quarryville, said that being in the operating room was where he ...

You have had nothing but fun and relaxation for several days, but all good things come to an end sooner or later. And that means for now, your camping trip is just about over. But before you pack up and head back to civilization, there are a few things you want to do to make sure your camping ends on a good note.

First, make sure you stow away your camping gear. Keep a whisk broom or some old rags handy to wipe off your camping gear as you pack it away. Try to keep you gear as organized as you had it when you left for the camping trip. Also, try to keep your dirty clothes in a separate bag so that they are ready to throw in the washer when you get home.

Next, check your cooler for any food or excess water that may be left over. Get it as clean as you can and add some new ice if you still have food to transport home.

The final thing you want to do before you leave the campsite is dowse the campfire. This is very important as you do not want the responsibility of having started a forest fire. Make sure the campfire is completely out and dowse the firepit area with the left over water from your cooler or using some water from another source.

If you follow these simple to remember tips, you will ensure that your campsite will be in the same shape it was when you arrived. And trust me, your fellow campers will thank you for it!

US Economic Growth Slides
Last week the US Federal Reserve surprised with a post meeting statement that weakened its previously confident stance about the strength of the US economic recovery. On Friday that 'reserve' from the Fed about the current health of the economy was supported by another cut in the estimate for first quarter GDP.As a result the annual rate of growth in the US economy is now around half what it was ...

The Factory Five GTM is the second fastest car ever tested by Car and Driver Magazine. That's right. Only the all-wheel drive, 1000 hp, Million dollar Bugatti Veyron recorded a faster 0-60 mph time!

The crew at Car & Driver Magazine just published a really cool compilation of all of their test numbers for the last 50 years! This should forever end bench-racing arguments about the fastest cars of all-time and give us all a nice reference point for comparing vintage cars from the 60's to modern cars.

The big news for us is that the stock LS7 powered Factory Five GTM that was tested just last year by Larry Webster out at the Bondurant track in Arizona is at the very top of a very expensive and impressive heap!

The GTM was the second fastest car ever tested in 0-60 mph and fourth fastest in the quarter mile. That's some pretty heady stuff. Here's the performance charts, but for the complete data set click here.

The only car on the planet faster that the GTM 0-60 mph (3.0 seconds) was the Bugatti Veyron at an amazing 2.5 seconds.

The only cars on the planet capable of outrunning the GTM in the quarter mile (11.0 seconds) are the Bugatti Veyron at 10.1 seconds, the Hennesey twin turbo Ford GT at 10.6 seconds, and the Saleen Twin Turbo S7 by a narrow margin of 0.1 seconds at 10.9 seconds!

The cars that tied the GTM in the quarter are only the Mosler MT900 and the Lingenfelter Dodge ACR Viper.

Cars the GTM bested read like a who's who of exotic supercars and include the mighty Ferrari Enzo and Ferrari 599 GTB, and the Porsche Carrera GT and 911 GT2 Turbo!

The data compiled by Car and Driver is really fun to read and includes a very interststing collection of all of our favorite cars from over the years. Check out the full article and if you have a GTM or are building one, smile big and wide when ANYONE pulls up next to you at ANY light in ANY town in the world. That's cool man!

Considered a leader in Corvette forums, and highly recommended by A. Schult is the blog and forum found at SmokinVette.com, where you can find tips and resources for the Corvette enthusiast. For additional info on the GTM, check out SmokinVette.com
