Knife Sharpening Experts: Amazing Ceramic Knives

When I first heard about ceramic knives, I couldn't believe it. I know that ceramic statues that fall shatter into many pieces. Why would a ceramic knife be any different? Boy was I wrong. Ceramic knives are much stronger than I thought.

Ceramic knives are made out of zirconium oxide. They aren't metallic whatsoever and have a flat, off-white to bright white color. Their composition is much harder than steel. Actually, they're second only to diamonds, which are the hardest mineral of all. Isn't that something?

There is another class of ceramic knives that have black blades. These blades start out as white zirconium oxide. With an additional firing process called sintering, they are converted into black zirconium carbide. This process gives the blades the advantage of being even tougher than before. Now they are the strongest knives out there.

There are definite advantages of ceramic knives over steel knives.

?Edge Longevity. Because ceramic knives are harder than steel knives, they can hold a sharp edge much longer. Generally, most ceramic knives can hold their edge for months if used correctly.

?Easy Use. Because they hold their edges longer, ceramic knives are easier to use than steel knives. Less sharpening is required. Not only that, they are so much lighter than steel knives.

?Wear Resistance. Ceramic knives do not stain or rust. They will not become discolored by food acides.

?Chemically non-reactive. You needn't worry over whether or not your food will taste or smell like metal. Isn't that great?

?Simple To Clean. Ceramic knives are non-stick. It isn't ever necessary to use special cleaners or abrasives to get them clean.

Just as there are advantages, there are a few pretty important disadvantages to using ceramic knives.

?Expensive. Ceramic knives are usually more costly than steel knives. This is because zirconium oxide is a fairly advanced material and costs more than steel. In addition, imported ceramic knives, as most of them are, have a high import tax that adds to their price tag.

?Edge Fragility. Quality ceramic knives are not likely to shatter when dropped. They are, however, likely to gain a chipped edge or a broken tip. Even though ceramic knives are very strong, their edges are quite fragile. Cutting bone or anything of similar hardness, then, is out of the question.

?Breakable Blades. If you use your ceramic knife as a prying tool, you've got a very good chance of snapping the blade at the handle. Just don't do it. While your knife isn't meant for prying, the fact that the blade could actually snap in two when strong pressure is applied leaves room for concern. Use it only for cutting.

All in all, you are advised not to sharpen ceramic knives. When customers purchase ceramic knives, they are urged to let the manufacturers be the ones to sharpen them up. If that isn't possible, they're advised to bring their ceramic knives to a machine shop.

Sharpening a ceramic knife is not the same as sharpening a steel knife. It is a whole new animal. You've really got to already be a skilled sharpener. However, with good skill and the right tools, you really could sharpen them yourself.

Ceramic knives are truly amazing. They are highly efficient. Usability may be limited, but where you can use it, watch out. They are quite extraordinary.

No charges after Gunn lockdown
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office June 9 decided not to file criminal charges against Gunn High School senior...

This is the burning question many out-of-state hunters want to know. There's two different types of hunts in Utah for elk. There's the 'any bull' hunt then there's the 'spike only.' We'll talk about where to go for both of these hunts.

Spike Only: This type of hunt covers much more of the state then the 'any bull' hunt.

1. Strawberry: Strawberry has been famous for hunting elk for decades because of the shear numbers of elk that thrive here. This area is also famous for growing big fish in the famous Strawberry Reservoir. Just about anywhere is great hunting in this area however the north side of Strawberry holds more elk in my opinion.

2. Monroe: This place I talked about before as being famous for the size of the elk and the shear numbers that thrive here as well. If you're looking to fill your spike tag then Monroe is a great place. Be fore warned though this place is extremely popular so I would plan on hunting the weekdays to avoid the masses of people that hunt here during the general rifle season.

Any Bull:

1. Kamas: This area has been an 'any bull' since Utah switched over to the 'any bull' - 'spike only' system. Kamas holds some big elk merely because of the steep, extremely rugged country that makes up Kamas. If you're planning on hunting this area make sure you have access to horses or plan on spending a couple of days getting your elk out.

Utah changes the boundaries of these hunts it seems almost every year so make sure you check the proclamation before you decide on a place to go.

Ledger wears 2010 fair queen crown
Hailey Ledger was crowned the 2010 Greater Jefferson County Fair Queen Wednesday evening on the show arena stage.

Here's an observation worth noting: when it comes to dividing heirlooms and estate contents, everyone tenses up and no one wants to be the first to talk. You can sense the apprehension in the room, and it appears as if everyone is trying to predict what the other will do. Will my sister make a fuss? Will my brother want the same things I want, and if so, what do we do? Will there be fighting and resentment?

From the perspective of this 20 year veteran who has observed many families, we should be more concerned with our own behavior. If every heir was in tune with their own behavior and had the ability to stay on the peaceful path, there would be a lot less fighting in the world.

When a parent passes, particularly the last remaining parent, true colors, a few fangs, and an entitlement mentality will eventually surface. Most feuds break out for four basic reasons:

  • A misunderstanding has taken place and has not been effectively dealt with
  • Everyone grieves differently and emotions can be volatile
  • A situation has been festering for years that probably took place during childhood and will now appear, causing all kinds of problems
  • An heir perceives he or she is being cheated in the distribution of heirlooms

How do you contribute to a more peaceful resolution?

  1. Sit down and say what's on your mind. Beating around the bush confuses everyone. Confrontation is not necessarily a bad thing. My father always said that the day after a thunderstorm is usually clean, bright, and beautiful. It clears the air and so does a confrontation that is more about sharing than finger pointing. Some heirs can't handle this confrontation, and I would definitely recommend some kind of mediation, if they want to save the relationship. The down side is that if they don't fix this early on, the relationship is normally irreparable as the damage is done. Then, both parties live out their lives with anger in their hearts.
  2. It's vital to do everything you can to keep the peace. Regardless of what part you play in this, it will have an impact on you too, most especially a negative impact. Even indirectly connected, it will touch you in some negative way. To avoid this, do your best to take the "high road." It feels good to do so, though it's not always easy.
  3. Validate the other person's feelings if they share them with you. At least, listen. Repeat what they said to you so they feel you heard them. Both should agree to simply do the best you can to smooth it over somehow. A photo of Mom and Dad sitting in front of you wouldn't hurt. After all, this is about honoring them and not about the heirs.
  4. Encourage others to be a part of the healing process, if they would like to be. It is not about taking sides. It is about encouraging both parties to do what they can to heal the hurt. Always remain objective and try very hard to see the other side. Seeing both sides, or at least putting yourself in the other's shoes, might very well lend some insight into the situation. The problem is that we are generally too self-centered to do this. Promise me you'll try!

Dividing heirlooms can be one of the most contentious experiences of our adult lives. There is no way to completely eliminate family squabbles. But, you can learn to put them out when they are smoldering, instead of when they grow into a full-blown forest fire.

Knife Sharpening Experts: Electric Knife Sharpening's Come a Very Long Way

If you're a person who has many knives, many edges to sharpen at a fairly consistent pace, electric knife sharpening is for you. So much time and effort will be saved. But take heed. Using these devices without proper training and only a little experience could be a regrettable move.

Electric knife sharpeners are well known for producing great heat while sharpening. Friction from the metal edge against the sharpener over time will do that. You've got to know just how hot you'll allow the metal edge to get. If your blade changes color on you, if you're waiting for that to be the sign, you've blown it. If you see sparks, forget about it. Your blade edge has been overheated and has lost its temper. Yeah, you've got an angry knife on your hands! (Ha!) No. To lose temper on a blade means that you have weakened it. Made it brittle, even pliable. Just imagine using it now. That is a knife that you don't want.

Even knowing that, electric knife sharpeners have improved a great deal over the last decade. Some of them are astonishing in what they claim they're able to do. Many are quoted as saying that they "will never detemper" a knife's edge. Wow. Wouldn't that be something? To never, ever have to worry. Truly amazing.

What about the sharpening angle? This is the angle of the bevel that determines the functionality and durability of each knife. Some modern electric knife sharpeners have high precision knife guides that it is said will achieve the exact sharpening angle they want, precisely. You needn't concern yourself over it. Some sharpeners actually claim that they will do as much as convert the existing sharpening angle of some knives to a different, more high performing sharpening angle. Another says that it'll get the edge to a condition that is better than the factory edge. It'll give it a sharpening angle that performs better than that given by the one's who've made the knife. Truly awesome declarations, one and all.

Many of the latest electric knife sharpeners have improved to having several sharpening stages all in one. The first stage is meant to get the edge to sharpness. You could stop right there if you wanted. The second stage is usually a finer sharpening with smaller abrasive particles than is found in the first stage. It is meant to get the edge to razor-sharpness. The third stage is meant for stropping. How about that? An electric knife stopper to get your edge silky smooth. Absolutely extraordinary.

Electric knife sharpening has definitely grown by leaps and bounds. If everything they claim is true, why would anyone want to know how to manually sharpen their knives? A very good question. Here's your answer: It isn't possible to take most kinds of electric knife sharpeners away from home and out into the field. Many of them are battery powered but they're size or bulk doesn't make transport very practical. It isn't very wise to take an electric knife sharpener out camping or on a fishing trip. You really shouldn't take it out on a boat or on a hunt. With electric knife sharpeners, you've got to be near an outlet or in a secure and safe location.

Most times then, it just isn't reasonable. Too many times you'll need to sharpen your knife's edge right where you are, where all you've got is yourself, maybe a pack and your own two hands. But most of all, more than all of this, sharpening on a sharpening stone will still get you the sharpest edge possible. It is still the most reliable way to sharpen your knives.

If you only need to sharpen your knives while you're at home, an electric knife sharpener is probably all you'll ever need. But if you're an active individual who often needs to do some sharpening while you're out in the world, you'll want to learn how to sharpen knives with your own two hands. And don't worry. You've got many choices to make that happen.

Knife sharpening isn't difficult. It just takes a bit of practice. Once you've got it, you'll have a very valuable skill that'll last your lifetime. And you can do this almost anywhere, at any time. That's pretty amazing right there? And when you're home, surrounded by the many advantages of modern living, your electric knife sharpener can get your knife sharpening done for you in two flashes. Truly incredible, to be able to manually and electrically sharpen your knives. There'd be nothing slowing you down.

Cocaine is a white powder made from an extract of the leaves of the coca plant indigenous to South America. It is believed the natives in South America were chewing coca leaves as far back as 3000 BC. The leaves gave them a lift, and staved off exhaustion and hunger. For these beneficial properties, the coca plant was considered a gift from God. In the 1400s, the Incas, an ancient Peruvian civilization, started cultivating coca extensively. This was the foundation of the modern coca crop, the origin of today's cocaine. The Spanish were exposed to the plant when they invaded parts of South America in the early 1500s. Sensing the benefits of the plant they promptly took over the coca...
