What are good but relatively cheap brands for combat/survival and pocket knives??

Before answering this question, I would have to ask this question. Are you going to actually use it for a survival knife under actual survival conditions or do you just want a nifty looking knife to play with. If you are looking for a knife that will be used under actual survival conditions, you have just excluded everything in the "cheap" category. Buy cheap survival gear only if you have a cheap life. If it will be used as a real survival knife, spend the money and get a good knife that will do what you need and will not break just when you need it.

There are many good brands out there. If you buy something from a maker like Cold Steel, Gerber or Buck, you will get a good knife that will withstand the rigors of a survival condition and may save your life. If you waste your money on the cheap crap that just looks good but is poorly made, you have just decided that your life is not worth much. You get what you pay for. Save up the money and get a good knife, you will never be sorry.

Sanibel Island in southwest Florida is a popular vacation destination, world-famous for its shelling beaches. Just 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, bicycling is a great way to see Sanibel. Bike rentals are readily available and sometimes it seems there are more bicycles than cars, but why not? Paved bike paths cover more than 22 miles the island, with access to restaurants, shops, beaches, fishing, golfing, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and more.

To reach Sanibel take I-75 exit 131 (Daniels Parkway) west to Summerlin Rd., turn left to the Sanibel Causeway (one-way $6 toll). Stop at the Visitor's Center for maps, information, restrooms and water. Parking on Sanibel is fee-based, so this is also a good place to park (for free) to start your bike tour. Be aware there is not much shade - bring water, sunscreen, and bug repellent.

Take Causeway Road to Periwinkle Way and cross to the bike path. Going west the path goes through a busy area and bikers should be careful of vehicles. There are shady canopies at 2 miles (Donax Road) with a view of the golf course, and at 3 miles before the Periwinkle Place shopping center (restaurants, shops, restrooms). The path crosses Periwinkle Way and connects to Sanibel-Captiva Road (San-Cap) at Tarpon Bay Road - go straight on Tarpon Bay for a scenic bay view.

The 7-mile San-Cap path is an escape from the commercial area. Within the first mile, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum features an array of shell exhibits. The entrance to the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is another 1.3 miles.

This 6,300 acre Refuge is a birdwatchers' paradise. Wildlife Drive ($1 per person/bike, $5 per car) is open from sunrise to sunset. Access to hiking trails, fishing, and an observation tower; the Education Center has maps, exhibits, restrooms, and water. The 4-mile drive on shells and limestone can be rough for biking. For a smoother alternative, ride the drive about halfway and take the Indigo Trail (2 miles) back to the entrance. The full drive ends on San-Cap Road west of the entrance.

Continuing west on San-Cap, there is a cut-off to Turner Beach, a popular shelling destination. Further along, a short bridge crosses to Captiva Island with its beaches, restaurants, shops, cottages and resorts - but there are no bike paths and bikers need to take care on the narrow roads.

For the return trip, ride about five miles back on San-Cap. This is a long, mostly unshaded stretch; restrooms, water, parking, and a playground are available at the Sanibel Recreation Complex. Swing off San-Cap onto the southern path along Gulf Drive by turning onto the Rabbit Road path - named for the marsh rabbits seen along the path, it runs one mile along a canal where heron and alligators can be seen.

After meeting West Gulf Drive, the path goes past hotels and resorts to Tarpon Bay Road (1.5 miles), where Tarpon Bay Beach offers parking, water, and restrooms. Take Tarpon Bay Road back to Periwinkle, or continue on West Gulf to the intersection of Casa Ybel Road and Algiers Lane (2.2 miles). Casa Ybel leads back to Periwinkle, or continue along Algiers to Middle Gulf Drive. Here the path goes into a wooded area, past the historic cemetery, and links to the beach at Gulfside City Park.

Back on Middle Gulf, the bike path passes beachside hotels and resorts. At Lindgren Blvd., turn north and return to Causeway Road and the visitor center. Or, go straight along East Gulf Drive about one mile to Periwinkle Way and Old Town Sanibel with its cafes and shops. Continue to the Sanibel Lighthouse (1884, the oldest structure on the island), beach, and fishing pier.

End your bike tour by returning along Periwinkle to the causeway and Visitor's center.

Listed among the top Florida bike trails for recreational biking, the Sanibel Island bike trails are featured here, with photos and recommendations on the best sections to ride.

Welcome to Dominica - Land of the Sisserou Parrot!

Eco-tourism

Did you know- One of the most attractive natural wonders for visitors to the Island is the Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Apart from being home to abundant rainforests and wildlife, this park boasts the second-largest boiling lake on Earth. However, the Island has other amazing landscapes: for example amazing beaches, waterfalls, rivers, old towns, and spectacular mountains. The coastline of Dominica is also rich in marine life. Finally, about 70 percent of the Island consists of protected rainforests, one the highest of the world's developing countries, along with Suriname and Gabon.

Democracy

Did you know- The Island has had more than 30 years of democratic governance, a great example in the Third World, where there are few democratic states. In the meantime, it also has one of the most peaceful societies in the Western Hemisphere.

Geography

Did you know- The Island of Dominica, shaped like a tobacco leaf, is located in eastern Caribbean (Americas). The Commonwealth of Dominica, has an area of 300 square miles ( 754 km2),making it the 188th -largest country on the planet (between the Netherlands Antilles and the Kingdom of Tonga). This English-speaking country is made up mainly of mountains and rainforests, while much of the rest of the Island is covered by spectacular beaches. There are many lakes and rivers. Finally, Dominica should not be confused with the Dominican Republic, a Spanish-speaking country in the Caribbean.

Rosseau

Did you know- Rosseau is the capital city of the Caribbean Island. Most of Dominica's population lives in the capital.

Wild Birds

Did you know- The Island is home to one of the continent's greatest varieties of birds, including bananaquits, grey kingbirds, red-neckeds, frigatebirds, siffleurs, barn owls, brown pelicans, yellow warblers and plumbeous warblers. The Sisserou Parrot - Dominica's national bird-- is one of the several species of exotic birds that can be found in the tiny island of Dominica. This exotic bird is one of largest parrots on the planet.

Human Development

Did you know- The year 1997 was a great year for Dominica. Why? Because of its exemplary democratic system and its education and social welfare this English-speaking Island ranked 41 of 175 countries and territories in the United Nations Human Development Index. Since then, it was a great victory for the developing countries, especially those in the Caribbean.

Jerome Romain- A National Hero

Did you know- By the mid-1990s, surprisingly, Dominica's athlete Jerome Romain won the bronze medal in the triple jump -with a fantastic jump of 17,59 metres- at the IAFF World Championships in Sweden (Goteborg). He also earned a silver medal at the 1995 Pan American Games in Mar del Plata, Argentina.

International Organizations

Did you know- At the end of 1978, the Island joined the United Nations. In addition, Dominica is one of the 53 Commonwealth countries. On the other hand, it also belongs to the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Population

Did you know- The Commonwealth of Dominica has an estimated total population of 72,660 people (as of July, 2009).

The Margaret Thatcher of the Caribbean!

Did you know- By the early 1980s, Mary Eugenia Charles made international headlines when she became the first woman to be elected Head of Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica, at a time when women could not expect to win a democratic election in the Third World. During this period of time, only had four female leaders on Earth: Iceland ( Vigdis Finnbogadottir), India (Indira Gandhi), Margaret Thatcher (Britain) and Dominica. At the same time, she was the first black female to win a democratic election in the world (by the mid-1970s, Madame Elisabeth Domitien had been named Prime Minister by Centroafrica's dictator Jean-Bedell Bokassa). Under her leadership, Dominica became a democratic state on the Caribbean, a region which has been plagued by dictatorships. Throughout most of the next decade, she was a campaigner for the environment on Dominica. Historically, the Island's Prime Minister Charles was one of the Caribbean's most influential leaders. After Charles became a leader, more than five women have been elected leaders on the Caribbean: Barbados (Nita Barrow, 1991-95), Bermuda (Jennifer Smith, 1998-2003), Haiti (Ertha Pascal Trouillot, 1990-91), Jamaica ( Portia Simpson-Miller, 2006-07), Netherlands Antilles (Maria Liberia Peters,1984-86 & 1988-94), and Puerto Rico (Sila Calderón, 2001- 2005).

There are some things you just can't neglect for the safety of your family- getting your car examined before a trip is one of them.

First of all, let your Norwood Park auto repair specialist complete a regular maintenance checkup one week prior to your trip. Having the air filter changed allows for a more fuel efficient running car.

Secondly, be sure to check tire pressure. When tire pressure is too low, it can be cause for blowouts at high speed later on. Make sure that you, the driver, carry a spare tire, with proper air pressure, and all the tools necessary to use one if you have to.

Third, Have your Norwood Park mechanic also check the coolant in your vehicle. An excellent mechanic will know the proper mixture of water and antifreeze in case of extreme climates. Talk with your mechanic and let them know what type of weather conditions you might experience on your trip.

Prince Edward Island Lighthouses: Light The Way Home

As a coastal community the lighthouses of Prince Edward Island not only served the practical purpose of lighting the way home before the era of GPS navigation, they now offer a unique opportunity to those who visit. Prince Edward Island offers a variety of lighthouse tours ranging from the scenic to the informative.

As most are aware, lighthouses served as a navigational aid for sailors and the ships they captained. Lighthouses are towers that are positioned on sea shores, or even sometimes in harbours. They use a series of lamps and lenses to help guide navigating vessels on the high seas. Lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, steer ships away from hazards, mark safe entry points into harbours and assist in aerial navigation. With that in mind it is important to note how important lighthouses were to trade and commerce throughout human history.

PEI has a rich history and is the birthplace of confederation in Canada. It also has many historic lighthouses that were used to guide the ships delivering goods to and from Canada. PEI's lighthouses are classified in two ways "First Generation" (built before 1873) and "Second Generation" (those built following 1873). The difference between the two types is that first generation lighthouses have an octagonal shape and were constructed when timber was plentiful in the province. The second generation lighthouses are square shaped as by this point (post 1873) PEI's timber supply had been scarce because of the shipbuilding industry.

Lighthouse technology, although used less in modern times, employs a series of lamps and lenses to project light over large distances. This technology utilizes concentrated light from a single continuous source and magnifies and reflects it so that it can be beamed across open water. The first lighthouses were lit by candles, later by whale oil, then by the 1870's kerosene was typically used.

As an island PEI boasts over 40 historic lighthouses. Surrounded by both scenic red sand beaches and rugged cliffs touring the lighthouses provides wonderful insight into maritime life and well as a rich Canadian history. Since Prince Edward Island is surrounded by water you are never to far from the breathtaking views of the gentle island.

Abbott matches crime blitz vow
UPDATE 2.15pm: TONY Abbott has moved to match Julia Gillard's anti-knives and crimes blitz by targeting gangs and weapons.

For some reason, fictional stories always seem to portray being marooned on a deserted island as a bad thing. Books like Lord of the Flies, movies like Cast Away, and TV shows like Lost portray it as a terrifying ordeal that one is lucky to survive. But if you ask me, aside from the obvious food and shelter issues, being cast away on some tropical deserted island sounds great. At least if you get dropped off on the kind of island portrayed in these stories, you have access to a beach, good fishing, trees to build a shelter, and regular rain for drinking water. Sure, I'd probably want to get off the island at some point, but the rescuers can take their time.

So-called "deserted island vacations" are a growing adventure travel trend among people with enough cash to spend. There are obvious difficulties to this type of vacation, of course; most importantly, it's extremely difficult to find islands that are 1) uninhabited, 2) picturesque, 3) safe, and 4) open to tourists. However, as the deserted island vacation trend grows, it's likely that governments and private individuals who own islands will begin taking advantage of this potentially lucrative business.

So what are the areas of the world most likely to have the right kinds of conditions for deserted island vacations?

The Caribbean: The Caribbean region has over 7,000 islands, cays, above-water reefs, and islets, and that's just the number that has been counted. To the northwest, there are the Greater Antilles, comprised of larger islands like Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica, all of which are surrounded by numerous smaller islands right in the middle of some of the most beautiful seas in the world.

And even more promising, to the southeast are the Lesser Antilles, comprised of hundreds of little island territories, including the Virgin Islands, Trinidad, Tobago, Grenada, Saint Vincent, and many others that most of us have never even heard of. And then there are also the Bahamas, the Florida Keys, and many more stray islands out in the middle of the sea.

South Pacific: As every deserted island enthusiast knows, the South Pacific region is the mother lode. When you take into account the Melanesian, Micronesian, and Polynesian island chains, add in the islands of Oceania, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, and all the other countries in the region, you get an uncountable number of islands that probably number somewhere around 100,000. If you weren't paying attention, you might not have realized that there were this many islands in the whole world, let alone in one region.

Not all fencers are equally talented, technically or tactically. If they were, running competitions would be absurdly easy. Any fencer could be assigned to any pool or to any position on an elimination table, and the organizers could still be assured of the fencer winning who was best of the identical athletes. But reality does not work that way. As a result, there has to be some method of dividing fencers so that the outcome reflects the skill level present - enter seeding. The objective of seeding is that the bouts result in the best fencer winning the competition, the better fencers surviving further into the competition (the rounds of 16, 8, and 4 of an elimination table), and...
