How To Keep Your Knives Sharp

Getting straight to the point may be the best way to handle conversation, but it's not the ideal way to sharpen a knife. Knives are invaluable tools around the kitchen and other areas of the home, but if they aren't sharp, they are useless - and dangerous.

Although your knives may seem sharp, a practical test can tell you whether your knives need to be sharpened. Knife blades are essentially tiny saws, complete with teeth. With use, these teeth get worn, bent or twisted. Knives made of harder metal don't get dull as often as those made of soft metal, but when they do get dull, they are more difficult to sharpen. It is necessary to find a substance harder than what your knife is made of to sharpen that knife. Metal sharpeners called steels are often used by professionals like butchers, but for most people who own stainless steel knives, a ceramic sharpener may be a better choice.

Using a Ceramic Sharpener to Sharpen Your Knives:

• Begin by placing the heel of your knife blade at the tip of the sharpener and then sliding the entire length of the blade down the sharpener. Keep the pressure and angle constant; you should feel the abrasion between the cutting edge and the sharpener.

• Plan your stroke so that you will finish with the point of the knife's blade near the base of the ceramic sharpener. Repeat this move on the other side of the sharpener to sharpen the other side of your knife.

Steel Sharpeners:

• If you choose to use a steel sharpener rather than a ceramic one, begin with the heel of the blade at the base of the sharpener (rather than at the tip as with the ceramic sharpener) and work your hands away from each other while maintaining the contact between the knife blade and the sharpener at an angle of 25 degrees.

Depending on how often you use your knives, they will require periodic grinding to create a new cutting edge. If you have a sanding wheel or a large grinder with stones of varying coarseness, you can carve a new edge on your knives, but if you lack this equipment, skill or confidence, it may be a good idea to have a professional handle the grinding as it could damage your knives and possibly your fingers.

Unconditional bail is set at $20,000 for a Rochester woman accused of threatening to kill a man while armed with a knife Tuesday evening.

I'm unsure why some people insinuate that someone who writes a lot of articles must be sacrificing quality. I write 100s of articles per week (for my own marketing and for client assignments) and I do not feel that I sacrifice quality in any of them. I average 25 articles per day, based on word count, each with the same level of quality and attention put in them.

I have over 10 years experience in article writing as a professional. Someone with 4 years of experience writing articles may not be able to do the number that I can but they should certainly be able to write more in a shorter period of time than someone who has been writing articles for 6 months. The more you write, the better you will get as well as the faster you will get.

EzineArticles is one example of an article submission site encouraging a balance of quality and quantity with challenges like 100 articles in 100 days (HAHD). These challenges foster that by giving authors who want to write more the motivation to do so. A lot of people see this and feel that it encourages quantity over quality. The debate is brought up with nearly every one of these challenges.

My goal for this HAHD challenge is to write 1,000 articles in 100 days and I assure you that my quality of writing will not be sacrificed in any way.

Some people sign up for these challenges and don't make it to 100 articles but if they do 30, or 50, or even 75, that may be more than they would have written had they not been motivated by the challenge. I think anyone who attempts it, whether you make it to 100 or not, has succeeded.

Some people argue that challenges like this do not reward the author with quality submissions but only the ones who can write the most. I can see how this could be perceived to be true. But let's compare it to other write-a-thons I have participated in. What about a challenge to write a certain number of words on a novel in a certain period of time? All of the authors get pledges based on how many words they write.

There are rewards for those novelists who write the most number of words throughout the duration of the write-a-thon. Is this to say that whoever writes the most will have a poorer quality finished novel than those who write slower? Why do we assume faster writing means less attention to detail?

I am known to be quite a perfectionist and when it comes to writing, my passion, I take it very seriously. I make mistakes just like anyone else but I take every step possible to ensure anything I write is of the upmost quality. My career and my reputation depend on it which also means my family and children depend on it.

These types of challenges are there to boost the number of article submissions and encourage authors to write more. We should all be trying to write better while also writing more but in the end, the challenge isn't about who has the best quality- only that you have the most that are of quality to pass the basic standards.

Sure, we'd all love a gold star stating that our articles are better than someone else's. But honestly, article submission site editors are not magazine editors. It's not their job to pick out the cream of the crop, only to ensure the "crop" is staying within certain basic guidelines on quality.
