Review: New $699 Mac mini is crisp and capable
The smallest sibling of the Mac family just graduated. Little brother has some new smarts and a sharp new suit. I'm talking about the Mac mini, and the "sharp" part is literal: this tiny desktop computer now has an elegant aluminum case with edges so defined they can scrape your skin off.

At least, it matters when deciding which type of aluminum-based material to use for your custom outdoor aluminum sign.

For instance, if you're ordering a real estate sign, you'll need an all-weather outdoor material - aluminum - but you won't need something 1/2" thick. But if you're crowning your business with a large, mounted sign, a.04" aluminum sheet simply won't do the trick. Fortunately, we have just what you need in outdoor aluminum signs, no matter the size!

Good Outdoor Signs Often Come In Small Packages...

Because aluminum is a high-endurance metal, a simple sheet is all that is needed for hanging, or free-standing, signs smaller than 18"x 24". Even for outdoor signs up to 3'x 4', aluminum sheeting is a good choice if mounted flat against a surface.

Smaller outdoor aluminum signs are usually used for real estate signs, directional signs, construction signs, and sale signs, to name a few. They're inexpensive, durable, and professional in appearance, so if you're looking for an efficient way to send your message, a smaller custom sign may be what you want.

Thickness grades ranging from .04" to .08" are available for these smaller outdoor aluminum signs, and we will be happy to help you decide which is best for your custom sign!

But Sometimes Bigger Is Better

You might be wondering how a naturally thin metal such as aluminum can look good on a large sign on top or in front of your building. The truth is, alone, it would not. But thanks to a variety of aluminum-based sign materials, you can have a weather-resistant custom outdoor sign of any size! The following materials make for high-quality custom outdoor signs:

ARMOUR-Wood is just as it sounds, a solid piece of wood 1/2" thick, sandwiched by two pieces of aluminum. ARMOUR-Wood is virtually indestructible for your custom outdoor sign and best for large signs that will be exposed to long-term weather conditions.

Aluminite is an aluminum composite material and similar in strength to ARMOUR-Wood, also 1/2" thick, but available in 1/4" as well.

Dibond is similar to ARMOUR-Wood in construction, only it uses plastic rather than wood. It is still quite strong, though not as heavy as ARMOUR-Wood or aluminite. However, it is ten times as strong as aluminum sheeting and able to stand up to the big boys, should your custom outdoor sign need a little muscle.

So, Goldilocks, Is Your Custom Sign Too Big, Too Small, or Just Right?

A hanging outdoor sign might be too small for your type of business. On the other hand, a large, mounted sign on your building may simply look too overwhelming. Is there a just-right option?

If Goldilocks could find her perfect bowl of porridge, then our experts can help you find your perfect custom outdoor sign.

Sometimes an outdoor aluminum sign actually looks best mounted between two posts. And the best news about this type of outdoor sign is that all of the aluminum materials are available for this professional-looking style.

Deciding which material will be best on your post-mounted outdoor sign depends on a few things:

  • How large are your posts? Because the weight varies considerably among the different materials, your posts have to be the appropriate strength to withhold the sign.
  • What are the size and style of the building you are advertising with your custom outdoor sign? Chances are, you will not want a large, ARMOUR-Wood sign in front of a small cottage-style building, or a thin, aluminum sign displayed in front of your office complex.
  • What is going onto your custom sign? If you have a large amount of lettering and graphics for your custom outdoor sign, then you will obviously need a sign with the surface area to make those graphics look clean and professional. Also, if you have details in your graphics that you really want to show off, then a larger sign would also work best. Small signs are best for small, simple messages, such as a name, number and logo.

So Try On An Aluminum Outdoor Sign For Size

Still not sure what to get? After two decades in the sign business, we will lead you down the right path in choosing the correct size and aluminum material for your custom outdoor sign. Guaranteed for ten years in any of the aluminum-based materials, our signs are built to last.

Just let us know what you want, and we will make it happen for you. When it comes to custom outdoor signs, size does matter, but so does our customer satisfaction! Visit http://www.signsus.com/metal-signs/outdoor-aluminum-signs.php for more information

Radio waves, lasers, magnetic induction: There are plenty of ways to beam volts through the air. Sadly, none are as cheap, efficient, convenient or safe as a cord.

Java Sockets - You Just Got to Plug Them in

I realised that programming in Java is quite a fun only after doing it myself. You will be amazed to know that it's like putting different pieces of puzzle together. You put them relatively in an integrated and coherent manner. The Beauty of it is, that most of the times you dont have to create these pieces yourself. You just customize them according to your need after you get them from an already defined java class or package. It was about programming, now lets talk sumthing about sockets.

Socket is used to establish a point-to-point, bidirectional connection between two entities in a network. Just like a real world socket, it is used to plugin a connection from another source. The connection can be incoming or outgoing or both. Similar is the case at the other end. To understand these sockets  properly, you need to learn a bit about Operating System and its Networking Protocols. Sockets are basically of three types: 1)UNIX Domain Sockets; 2) Internet Domain Sockets; 3) NS domain Sockets.

Java being platform independent Programming language, supports only Internet Domain Sockets as only they are platform independent out of three. These internet domain sockets are distinguished on the basis of Internet protocol they work on...

1) TCP/IP(Transfer Control Protocol): The data transfer is reliable, in-order,connection oriented, so takes connection establishment time before the actual data transfer takes place. Sockets based on TCP/IP are known as Stream Sockets.

2) UDP(User Datagram Protocol): It is connectionless, unrealiable and unordered data transfer protocol. Each packet in it has a destination address associated with it and is realeased into the network to make its own way. The sockets based on UDP are called Datagram Sockets.

3) Raw IP: It is a non-formatted protocol. Unlike TCP/IP, UDP protocols, Raw IP is not a core protocol of IP Suite. It's different from them as its used to receive header information of the packet along with data, which is not the case in TCP/IP, UDP, they just receive data.

In Java Sockets are mainly implemented from already defined classes and pakages. These are:

1) Java.net.package: It contains all the classes that a user require to create a network based application. The below mentioned classes namely ServerSocket and Socket are also its part. This package also contain classes to create Secure Sockets and to connect a Web Server.

2) ServerSocket Class: It Provides sockets for the Server side. These sockets monitor network for requests or simply waits for them. When such request arrives, a server socket performs assigned task based on the request.

3) Socket Class: This class provides the Client side sockets. These sockets connect to the server, send and receive data for the client.

Remember, no socket can work without a port which is identified by a port no. Port is a gateway to a socket connectivity which is on the both sides of network. A socket is mainly identified as per its ports.

Working Safely With Utility Knives and Box Cutters

Thousands of workers are injured each year using box cutters. To avoid injury or damage to inventory, retail workers should use caution when opening boxes and checking freight. Here is a quick guide to safely when opening a carton with a box cutter.

While working with freight and opening boxes, always keep a box cutter with a sharp blade handy. Set the carton on a flat, steady surface. Examine the box to determine the thickness of the cardboard. Thin cartons require less pressure to cut.

Caution should be taken not to damage the contents with the box cutter.

Place one hand on the box. Use the other hand to firmly hold the box cutter.

Begin cutting with the box cutter blade angled slightly upward and away from the merchandise. Cut away from your body and as close to the top of the box as possible.

Additional Tips:

With each cut, be sure that your body and clothing are not in the path of the box cutter and you should also heed the following points:

• Always wear safety glasses when using utility knives. Blades can snap off unexpectedly.

• Always use sharp blades. Dull blades are a safety hazard, requiring more force to make the cut, which can lead to tool slippage.

• Always pull the knife toward you when cutting, and make several passes when cutting thicker materials.

• To prevent slippage, make sure blades are seated properly in the knife.

• Never leave a utility knife unattended, especially with the blade exposed

You can choose from several different types of utility knives including the following:

Retractable Blade Utility Knife

This is a general-use tool designed to cut materials such as drywall, cardboard cartons, laminates and plastic. The blade retracts into body of knife for safer operation and storage. Some models have up to 3 different blade positions for different cutting depths.

Higher-end models have rubber grips and ergonomic designs for better gripping. The handles on these knives generally unscrew or swivel open to permit blade changes. Many models provide extra blade storage in the handle and some models have spring-loaded blades that automatically retract when the knife is released.

Fixed Blade Utility Knife

On these knives the blade locks between the halves of the knife to provide more blade stability than retractable models. The handle generally unscrews or swivels open to permit blade changes.

As with the retractable knives, the higher-end models have rubber grips and ergonomic designs for better gripping but unlike the retractable models, the fixed blade knives accept larger or special-purpose blades that can't retract into the handle.

Snap Blade Knife

On these knives the blade sections snap off (generally between 8 and 13 per blade) without having to open the tool to change blades. They are generally used for cutting light- and medium-duty materials such as wallpaper, rubber, vinyl and leather, or materials with adhesive backing that will stick to the blade and prevent sharp, accurate cutting.

Carpet Knife

Just like its name, the carpet knife is designed for trimming and cutting carpet and other flooring materials. It's angular design provides easier access to hard-to-reach places and many models feature retractable blades and blade storage in handle.

Precision Knife

Popular with graphic artists and hobbyists this pencil-sized tool Is used for precision cutting of lightweight materials, such as paper or poster board. It is also know as a "hobby knife" or by its trade mark name, X-Acto® knife.

These knives feature ultra-sharp blades made from surgical steel and they come in a variety of sizes in triangle and curved shapes and contain a built-in chuck to hold and secure the blades. Some models feature blade storage in the handle.

So, choose the utility knife that is appropriate to your task, and above all, use it safely heeding the tips that are contained in this article.

Gary Brown: There has to be a plan behind a good Father’s Day gift
Dad was unfailingly gracious in receiving each year’s gift. He would gratefully accept a small, wrapped package that looked like a box of wood screws. Still he was able to feign surprise and wonder aloud, “What could this be?”

Steps to Prevent Dry Socket after Dental Extraction

Dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is an infection in your tooth socket after a tooth is extracted. It occurs when the blood clot at the site of a tooth extraction is disrupted prematurely. This leaves the alveolar bone unprotected and exposed to the oral environment. The socket can be packed with food and bacteria. The pain typically commences 3-4 days following the extraction. This is often extremely unpleasant for the patient, as symptoms include extreme pain (sometimes worse than the toothache that indicated the extraction), a foul taste, bad breath, and swelling in the infected area. Nerves are exposed, and sometimes the bone is visible in the empty socket. It is often accompanied by what feels like an earache. There may be lymph-node involvement.

Dry socket occurs in approximately 5 percent of all tooth extractions. Women are at higher risk than men for developing dry socket. Of the women that have developed it, the majority take an oral contraceptive. Smokers have been shown to have a greatly increased risk of developing alveolar osteitis after tooth extraction. This is thought to be due to the decreased amount of oxygen available in the healing tissues as a result of carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke. It is advisable to avoid smoking following tooth extraction for at least 48 hours to reduce the risk of developing this dry socket.

Treatment for alveolar osteitis is mainly preventative. Maintaining good oral hygiene is a must before and during the healing period. If possible, have your teeth professionally cleaned several days before dental surgery. Take all of your regular medications for systemic illnesses (diabetics and cardiovascular diseases). Women are recommended to have extractions during the last five days of their menstrual cycle. This is to minimize chances of developing dry socket because the estrogen levels are lower during that part of the cycle (day 23-28).
Several things can cause the premature loss of a blood clot from an extraction site, including smoking, forceful spitting, sucking through a straw, coughing or sneezing. You should also avoid consuming carbonated or alcoholic beverages after an extraction, as these have also been associated with the development of dry socket. Also, you should:
• keep your fingers and tongue away from the extraction site.
• apply an ice pack to your jaw for the first 24 hours following surgery — on for 15-20 minutes, and off for 30-40 minutes — to prevent pain and swelling and stop excessive bleeding.
• not rinse your mouth the day of surgery. The next day, you can rinse gently with warm salt water; dissolve one teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Be sure to rinse and spit gently.
Call your dentist right away if you notice any symptoms of dry socket. Treatment for dry socket typically includes a gentle rinsing of the socket to remove debris. This is followed by packing the socket with Alvogyl. Its fibrous consistency allows for easy filling of the socket and good adherence during the entire healing process. The active ingredients of Alvogyl include:

• eugenol for analgesic action;
• butamben for anesthetic action; and
• iodoform for anti-microbial action.

Sometimes analgesics are also prescribed. You usually need to return to the dentist's office two to three times over a two-week time period for re-dressing and monitoring the healing. Fortunately, a dry socket is often self-healed over a longer time. In very rare situation where the dry socket can't heal itself, another operation may be needed. The procedure aims to make the socket bleed again and so that a new blood clot can be formed inside the post-extraction socket.

We have scoured the net and have seen a few interesting and special ideas that people apply to their door hangers. Here are some of them below. The variety door hangers are travel & tourism door hangers, expressions & greetings door hangers, gardening & landscaping door hangers, office stationery door hangers, political door hangers, electronics & communication door hangers, sports & fitness door hangers, beauty & fashion door hangers and more.

Sparkling/Holographic door hangers:

One of the most eye catching door hangers we saw on you research were the door hangers with sparkly material or holograms printed or embedded onto their material. With the light hitting just at the right angle, you should see the door hanger sparkling and shining even from a far. This fact alone keeps eyes interesting in such a sparkly site and marks your door hanger for inspection and reading. Of course printing door hanger with these kinds of materials in it might be a bit more expensive.

Glowing door hangers:

Next we have the glowing door hangers. While the sparkling and holographic door hangers win at the day, glowing door hangers rule the night. For potential customers who come home at night this is perfect. Nothing screams odd and interesting than a glowing message at your doorstep. This idea definitely catches eyes and maybe even a squint if it is too bright. Of course the color of the glowing door hanger must be adjusted so that it doesn't over power the message on the door hanger itself.

Shaped door hangers:

Afterwards, we go to the shaped door hangers. This is one of the nicest ideas out there for door hangers. Some funny door hangers can be shaped like a monkey, snake or bird that is hanging on to the door knob. Others can look like a hole in the door or some other weird attachment to the door itself. One interesting door hanger design we saw, was a door hanger that was shaped like underwear. Things like this of course make people curious about what has been hanged on the door. It can get some laughs too if you have a nice concept about it.

Musical door hangers:

Lastly we have door hangers with music. You think greeting cards are the only one to have them? With a small motion sensor and an equally small music speaker door hangers can make sounds as they are moved. This means that once people pick up the door hanger, they will immediately hear some nice theme music that the subject of the hanger. Again since there is some extra content there and audio content, it makes it a unique door hanger unlike others who just do the same old boring advertising door hangers.
