Today in local history
Thursday August 5, 2010 Aug. 5 50 years ago today ADAMS -- Pvt. Robert Gilly, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gilly of 19 Second St., has completed recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C. The 12-week training schedule included drill, bayonet training, physical conditioning, parades and ceremonies and other military subjects.

What the heck is Parallax? I asked the same thing when I first started looking to upgrade from iron sight to a good rifle scope. This guide should give you some insight into getting the best focus out of your Bushnell scope, or any other adjustable parallax scope for that matter.

Have you ever looked through a higher power scope and noticed that if you move your eye off center to the edge of the exit pupil, the reticle seems to move across the target? Well, that shift happens when the parallax setting is not properly adjusted for that distance. Some have mistaken the parallax adjustment as a focus or even a range finder, but it is neither of these. The parallax adjustment, when set properly will insure that the reticle is positioned correctly on the target; as though your crosshairs are a part of the target, unmoving, as if they were painted on, just for you. Of course if your scope is not a "target" or a "varmint hunting" rifle scope, you probably don't need to be concerned with adjusting the parallax setting. In most hunting scopes the parallax is negligible, in fact I have a good friend that hunts regularly and he didn't even know what I was talking about when I asked him. I don't hunt, but I love to spend a Saturday at target practice. So to me, any small increase in accuracy is defiantly welcome.

Most of the higher power scopes, with a power of 12 or more, will have an adjustment ring at the end of the Objective bell (the end closest to the target). Usually the parallax adjustment ring has the suggested settings printed on them, so you can just dial in the range you're shooting from. The problem is these suggested settings are rarely as accurate as they could be. So why should you go through the trouble of getting yours "just right"? Why not just use the suggested setting? Even if you're a great shot, you could easily shrink the size of your groups by as much as 30%, just by taking the time to properly set the parallax adjustment on your scope. Many shooters don't even realize that even with a few adjustments they could greatly affect their shooting performance. Let's face it, the documentation that came with your scope isn't a real blessing when it comes to learning how to use it, they just assume you already know.

Now that you have an understanding of what parallax is, it's time to fine tune your scope for increased accuracy. I'm going to assume you have already zeroed in your scope and that it's properly sighted in. You will need to set up your rifle so it is securely positioned on a bench. A shooting rest with a vise would be best. Dial in the suggested setting on the parallax adjustment ring for the range that you're shooting from. Now, look through the scope and shift your eye back and forth, left and right so you can see if the crosshairs seem like they are moving across the target. Experiment with the adjustment ring until you have eliminated the illusion that your crosshairs are moving. When you think you've got it perfect, take a little white-out liquid paper and make a mark on the parallax adjustment ring so you'll know where to adjust it later. Some people paint their mark or score it into the metal, but to start with I prefer something that's not so permanent until I'm absolutely certain about the position. Next, go ahead and take three to six shots and see how your grouping has improved. Nice, huh! Don't stop there, move your target 50 yards back and repeat the process. You might as well find the perfect settings for all the ranges that you typically shoot from in 50 yard increments.

If you're in the market for an affordable rifle scope that will really go the distance I can recommend two models from the Banner series of the Bushnell Scopes line of rifle scopes. The 1st is Bushnell Scopes Banner 6-18x50. This is a long range target scope that is also great for varmint hunting, and it's parallax focus can be adjusted from 10 meters to infinity. The 2nd is Bushnell Scopes Banner 6-24x40. This long range target and varmint scope features a mil-dot reticle which is my preferred style of crosshair. Both can be purchased for around $120.00, so they won't empty your wallet. To view these and other Banner series Bushnell scopes please visit my Bushnell Scopes page.

Happy Hunting,

Report: Pa. museum statue's stolen sword is found
PITTSBURGH—A newspaper is reporting that the two-foot bayonet torn from a statue outside the Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum in Pittsburgh has been found.

Antique car shows are wonderful venues for car hops. Set up a drive-in style catering event and make your antique show more fun. Dress up your waiter or waitress and have them bring food to the people in their vehicles.

Antique shows have older vehilces that work great for hops. They deal with the fifties theme. Be sure to have food that brings in the theme, such as hamburgers, fries, and milkshakes.

A hop can be fun for customers. Servers bring out food to customers in their car. The waiters and waitresses wear their costumes and have a lot of fun serving them.

They can be anything in fifties attire. Poodle skirts, white socks, blue jeans, and ponytails are great choices for sock hop attire. If you want to do a little more with the costume, have servers wear roller skates.

Search online for ideas. You can look at YouTube, or older television shows and movies. Some good examples can be found on Happy Days or in American Graffiti.

While a lot of television shows portray servers always wearing roller skates, that wasn't usually the case. Most waiters and waitresses did not use roller skates. They worked in the drive-in on foot.

Car hops were termed car hop because the server normally hopped on to or over his car to let the customers know where to put their change. Waiters and waitresses needed tips to make money. Customers left the tips in the server's car on their way out.

Car hops were very popular in the 50s, but they are basically unheard of today. Now there are only a few original drive-in stands and fast food car hops. Bringing back the car hop theme can bring back a lot of good memories to people.

Purple Heart survivor of D-Day honored on invasion’s anniversary
Plaque for “Uncle Bobby” Castillo at Mt. Soledad in La Jolla unveiled on anniversary of D-Day Landing. Castillo was active in the American Legion.

Greetings to one and all, in the name and memory of Herbert W. Armstrong who visited and addressed many leaders of the nations you represent here today.

Mr. Armstrong, ambassador for world peace without political portfolio, was a man sent by the Great Creator God (who made all men and determined the boundaries and languages of each nation) to deliver a bittersweet message.

I shall also deliver that bittersweet message, standing before you, facing the nations, dressed in a black t shirt, jeans and sackcloth -- not your typical attire for such important affairs, but these are not normal times and business as usual will soon be history, as you all very much know and express your concern by gathering here in the United States of America to address these issues that threaten all mankind.

The world waits with bated breath to hear the recording of the former tyrant Saddam Hussein and questions whether they will confirm his weapons of mass destruction program and justify President George W. Bush's decision to launch his preemptive attack against belligerent Iraq.

Regardless, our American troops have already been dispatched, they have bravely fought and deposed the proud dictator who imagined himself a modern Nebuchadnezzar driven to destroy the Jews, and free elections have now been held in that liberated country - not that democracy alone is the message God has ordained our British-Israelite nations to spread. However I share with you a greater recording that will directly affect each and every one of you, and trouble your nations and bring mankind to the brink of extinction unless that “Strong Unseen Hand from Someplace” intervenes and saves us from ourselves.

From reading Ryan Mauro's book, Death to America: The Unreported Battle of Iraq -- it was impressed upon my mind how mad some Muslims are driven by the jinns of jihad and insanely seek to wreak havoc and destruction upon all the world who rejects their false vision. I gladly testify that not all Muslims share their perverted passion, as is evident in noble men like Sheik Abdul Hadi Palazzi of Rome, Italy.

However, I do solemnly affirm that such spiritual sickness does not only afflict the Muslim world, but that such religious fanaticism is again to rear its ugly head in blood-soaked Europe. Europe's rapid response to jihad will be a new crusade that will slaughter both Arabs and Jews and every Christian who doesn't agree with the Roman Catholic Church!

The Prophet Daniel records some great provocation, an Islamic confederation or network of sorts that is soon to butt heads with Catholic Europe (Daniel 11:40-45), resulting in a blitzkrieg operation that will strike them dead in the Middle East, taking out countries like Egypt and subduing Libya and Ethiopia and undoubtedly overwhelming Iran.

That is good news. Europe -- not America -- will neutralize the Nazi-Muslim threat. However, the bad news is that it will bring out the beast in Europe and only whet their appetite for more blood. Europe will morph into the final revival of the unholy Roman Empire of the German Nation, and demand Jerusalem become an “international city,” as called for by the accursed UN Resolution 181. The Germans and Jesuits have been the major influence behind this strategic move and have their evil eyes on the prize of Jerusalem, especially the coveted Temple Mount [http://ezinearticles.com/?The-Secret-Nazis-Covet-the-Temple-Mount&id=105789].

The whole world has been focusing on Islamic terrorism, as is understandable, but the greatest threat to world peace is the German-dominated European Union! The United States has foolishly been helping to create such a Frankenstein Monster that will brutally betray both the American, British and Jewish peoples. Herbert W. Armstrong warned of this clear and present danger -- as an early warning system -- for years. The weapons of mass destruction that the increasingly fascist EU possess will unleash nuclear terror upon our major cities and rain down death and destruction upon us and those who survive will suffer deportation due to our idolatry and immorality.

These biblical warnings, based upon reliable information obtained from Daniel and the Book of Revelation, are the greatest recording all mankind must hear and heed -- if we're to be spared from WWIII. I'm here to announce this plain truth as a witness and a warning and share it within Beyond Babylon: Europe's Rise and Fall. What you do with it is between you and your Maker, but I encourage you to take it seriously and choose life and help save your respective nations.

David Ben-Ariel is a Christian-Zionist writer in Ohio and author of Beyond Babylon: Europe's Rise and Fall. With a focus on the Middle East and Jerusalem, his analytical articles help others improve their understanding of that troubled region. Check out the Beyond Babylon blog.

The Exciting Airsoft Sniper Rifle Part II

The Airsoft Sniper Rifle has become a very popular weapon of choice for the veteran Airsoft warrior. Arguably one of the most powerful Airsoft guns in the industry, the sniper rifle is designed to propel the plastic bbs at a high velocity with stunning accuracy.

It is extremely important for the Airsoft sniper to choose the right rifle. There are several reputable manufacturers who produce different model lines of Airsoft Sniper Rifles. Some with such detail that they are very difficult to distinguish from their real "steel" counterparts.

The Airsoft Sniper Rifle is available to the consumer at a broad price range. Some of the models with the more exquisite detail, and with metal and wood casings can cost well over a whopping 2,000 U.S. dollars!

Made almost completely out of steel and wood, these super expensive models have high quality interior mechanisms that fire the gun. With their heavy feel, long barrel lengths, averaging around 42 inches (1070mm), and with their quality detail, these expensive models are well worth the price to the avid Airsoft player.

The above average cost of the sniper rifle has proven to be a barrier to some enthusiasts. Though the average Airsoft player cannot afford such a high price for a gun, there are some excellent, less expensive models.

These rifles are not in the very expensive luxury category, but nonetheless are still a high quality gun. For a well built model, one can expect to pay around the same price that he would for an automatic electric Airsoft gun (AEG), between two or three hundred U.S. dollars.

The higher quality Airsoft Sniper Rifle is usually made from heavyweight ABS plastic. This heavyweight material is a blend of plastic and metal. The ABS plastic gives the gun a cost effective, realistic heavy feel without the expensive steel manufacturing. The Airsoft Sniper Rifle that is made of this material is generally marked ABS, which usually increases its overall value. Tanaka and Maruzen manufacture the most popular of these models.

It is also important to note that even less expensive Sniper rifles are also available. These guns are made primarily out of plastic, and can usually be purchased for around 100 U.S. dollars. Unicorn Hobby Company (UHC) of Taiwan makes one of the most popular models. This low-end, cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle model is called the UHC Super 9.

In purchasing a cheap Airsoft Sniper Rifle, one can easily exchange some of the parts for metal or wood at a later time. This not only makes the gun feel and look more realistic, it increases the its overall value.

Most major manufacturers offer upgrades such as metal barrels, custom grips, red light scopes, wooden stocks, laser sights, bi-pods and other accessories. The added expenses of potential needed upgrades must be kept in mind. Although capable of a decent firing experience when initially purchased, in order to be effective in serious war game battles, some upgrades will be needed.

Tokyo Marui of Japan has developed a new Sniper Rifle called the VSR-10. At a manageable price, this rifle works quite well before any upgrades are made.

Choosing the Airsoft Sniper Rifle that accommodates the right budget is certainly very important. No matter the price, these exciting guns are sure to bring great enjoyment to gallant Airsoft warriors everywhere.

Buying Sniper Rifles to Tip the Scales of Hunting

Sniper rifles are used not just for military purposes but also for hunting. The telescopic lens can help the hunter track and pinpoint the target quarry. The design of the sniper rifles can help the hunters to position themselves and shoot the game without becoming detected. There are many different types of rifles which are used for sniper purposes.

These sniper rifles are not confined to one country only. They are also designed to cater for different caliber bullets. For this reason if you feel that a sniper rifle will be of more help in your hunting it may be wise if you look these different rifles over carefully. The first factor for your choosing sniper rifles is that of the design and telescopic lens.

When you hold this rifle and any other sniper rifles in your hands the balance of the rifle should be perfect. You shoulders and arms should not be aching from holding the rifle in the position you desire. As most sniper rifles have telescopic lens you should have the ability of detaching the lens whenever you want. The lens itself should be in excellent condition.

As there are hunters who prefer to do their hunting in the nighttime the sniper rifles which has night vision telescopic lens will help them to see the night roaming game. The other factors you should think about when you are considering buying one of the types of rifles is the smooth trigger action you will get.

Like with the ordinary rifles sniper rifles come in similar action triggers. You will be able to select from bolt acti
