After selling rifle scopes on eBay for 6 years I can say with absolute certainty that the one area that confuses prospective new scope owners more than any is the choice of scope mounts. The good news is that unless your rifle is an unusual or vintage type then choosing the right scope mounts is simple. In this article you'll learn how to quickly determine what type you need.

So the, you have a new rifle and want to get a nice telescopic rifle scope to help you shoot better? And make it look very cool too icon smile Rifle Bayonet

Selecting a rifle scope can be a tricky process in itself and I won't cover it in this article except briefly now: If you are shooting in normal dawn to dusk type light at ranges no more than say 300 yards/metres then get a 3-9x40 or similar variable magnification scope. 3-9 = it ranges between 3 and 9x magnification and the 40 bit means it has a 40mm wide lens at the end. This is a very good general purpose combination and there are options for most budgets from cheap to military.

Now what you need in order to fix the scope to the rifle are mounts. This should not be tricky but to save time, hassle and cost in returning incorrect mounts to the seller it's good to get it right first time.

There are 2 things you need to know:

1) What mounts are need for your scope in terms of (a) height and (b) ring diameter.

2) What type of rifles scope receiver grooves you have.

In many cases you may find scope and mount packages sold together, in these cases you can be sure that they will be correct for the scope but you still need to be sure that they will be OK for your rifle before you go ahead. If not then you'll need to ask the seller if they can swap for another type.

What mounts are need for your scope

Scope mounts come in 3 main heights. By height I mean how high they will lift the scope off the rifle. There are 3 main heights:

  • Low - For scopes with upto 32mm lenses
  • Medium - For scopes with upto 42mm lenses
  • High - For scopes with 40-56mm lenses

There are also such things as ultra high but you're unlikely to need those unless you have a specialized requirement.

The size of lens rule is a good general guide but also bring your rifle into consideration. If it has say a bolt action then it's best to go for a high mount even with a smaller lens scope.

Scope Tube Diameter is the second consideration when matching mounts to scope.

Most scopes have a 25mm (1 inch) body tube and you'll find that most mounts are for these scopes. If not then they will specify that they are for a different diameter body - you'll find some with 30mm tubes. So be sure you know what your scopes body tube diameter is the choose your mounts to match.

What type of rifles scope receiver grooves you have

By this I mean the place where the scope mounts will attach on top of the rifle.

Commonly referred to as the scope base or rail, grooves or receiver.

There are 2 main types: Standard and Weaver (also often called Picatinny or Tactical)

In turn mounts are commonly referred to as Standard or Weaver mounts.

Standard -

  • 2 grooved lines running front to back along the top of the rifle body
  •  Between 9 and 13mm apart.

Weaver/Picatinny/Tactical -

  • The grooves are 20-22mm apart
  • The base is often more of a solid block design with horizontal "slats" across it (some mounts have arrestor blocks in their bases that give an extra degree of lock by mating with these grooves)

Standard bases are as the name suggests very common. They are the standard these days for air rifle and paintball guns and many lower powered pistols.

Weaver bases are to be found on higher power higher recoil rifles, especially military, hunting and shotguns. They are also found on many airsoft rifles where the replication is very accurate.

Your mount choice factors combine then...Examples

Your have an air rifle with a standard base and are getting a 3-9x40 scope with a 25mm tube = Standard Medium or High mounts.

Hunting rifle with 20mm weaver base  and you're getting a 6-24x50 scope with 30mm tube = High 30mm Weaver mounts.

1 or 2 piece?

This is a further division, I add this for completeness. If you're new then I'd say go for 2 piece as your first type.

1 piece is where the whole mount body is a single molded unit. This type is very strong and solid but may not be an option if you have a bolt action or top magazine rifle.

2 piece - Simply 2 mounts that you position on the rifle base rail. Not quite the rigidity of the 1 piece but more flexible in terms of positioning and ability to "work around" obstructions. Cheaper too.

I hope this article helps you make the right choice. Once you break it down into steps making the right rifle scope mount choice is not hard and will let you zero your new cool looking rifle scope as quickly as possible!

Nick, originally from the UK now lives in Sweden with wife Lena, 2 daughters and a Border Terrier called Gunnar. He runs Zero Rifle Scope which, hardly surprisingly is all about rifle scopes, how to zero, calibrate and use them. Patlan graduates basic training
Army Pvt. Michael A. Patlan has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

A rifle is made up of two basic components. These are the barrel and stock. The barrel is made of high tensile steel with grooves inside. The stock is the rear of the weapon on which the barrel and trigger mechanism is attached. Wood, metal, or plastic are the materials from which the stock is fabricated. The stock serves as a support for the fire arm. All stocks of firearms are integral parts of a weapon. The rifle stock has some basic functions. It is the central piece that holds the barrel and trigger mechanism together. In addition its construction has a hollow at one end so that it fits in with the curve of the shoulder. The purpose of this is a validation of Newton's third law of motion that states that action must have an equal reaction. Thus by fitting into the groove of the shoulder the recoil is to an extent lessened and reaction to the forward movement of the bullet greatly negated. The stock also gives the weapon stability.

Guns particularly rifles have fascinated Americans for long. Big hunters like Wild Bill Hickok, Buffalo Bill Cody and Davy Croquet are part of American folklore. In earlier periods in the Wild West the guns served a particular purpose as a weapon for self defense against Red Indians, rustlers and also for hunting. With the passage of time the love for rifles has not abated and these weapons are purchased in large numbers by Americans from all walks of life for sport, target shooting and self defense. It is therefore natural that a vast number of American gun owners will like to go in for a distinctive stock for their rifles. The promotion and control of rifles is looked after by the National Rifle association. It was established as early as 1871 and is a non-profit group for the promotion of marksmanship, firearm safety, and hunting and personal protection firearm rights in the United States. The clout of the NRA can be seen from the fact that in the United States NRA gun ownership is regarded as a civil liberty which is protected by the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

The most common firearm used for hunting is the rifle while for bird shooting the preferred fire arm is the shot gun. All these weapons can have custom made stocks. They can also be crafted and made to suit your personal tastes. Stocks can be given an individual touch by getting intricate designs and carvings made so as to give your weapon a personal touch. So when you go for a hunt the weapon gives you a sense of pride.

There are a many companies that sell and market stocks for rifles. You can also order stock on the net as a lot of popular e -marketing websites cater to such purchases. Whatever use you have for your weapon, a stock will always remain an essential part of it.

With the development of Fiberglass technology the same has found its way into manufacturing of stocks. Fiberglass rifle stock, composite rifle stock and carbon fiber rifle stocks are very much in vogue. These materials have substituted wood which however remains the principal material used for rifle stock.

Stocks for rifles come in a variety of colors, from which you can pick and choose. You can get Black rifle stocks as well as Camouflage Rifle Stocks. Stocks can also be bought for all types of rifles that include Remington rifle, Savage rifle and the Winchester rifle. A stock is an essential part of your success in using the rifle for whatever you use it for like hunting or Target Shooting. Stock manufacturers will manufacture stock according to your preference. You will of course have to give your option for the style of stock, type of wood, material, design etc. The company will cater to your taste. Once the stock is ordered there is no requirement of sending the rifle to the manufacturer. In any case as things stand most of the manufacturers of rifle stocks do not provide gun smith for services. You will be better off fixing the stock yourself. Its not a very difficult job any way.

Once the stock is received by you from the company, it will require sanding and polishing. Sanding is done by rubbing the stock with sandpaper before the final finishing.Sanding will give the stock a smooth finish. The end result will have a lot to do with your effort and work. After sanding the finishing can be done by oil, urethane, or other finishing compound. In case you need guidance then you can always tap the internet or a friend who knows something about this work. Many sites can be scouted that will educate and inform you as to how to do finishing of a stock. Once the stock is ready, you are on your way for a custom made rifle for hunting or target shooting.

Gareth Oakley is a primary school teacher with problems. He is fighting the demon drink and no doubt the mood swings that come with it. He is still pining over his lost true love, now departed. He goes to bed alone in the small house they once shared, a house full of memories of happier times.

When he awakes he has a massive hangover, but that can't be right for he hasn't fallen off the wagon. He hasn't touched a drop. How strange. He opens his eyes and focuses on the ceiling. It's not his ceiling, it's not his house. So where is he? And more to the point, how did he get there? He soon finds that he is not alone, there are many others there too, and the inevitable rivalries rapidly fall into place.

So begins "abducted The Awakening" the first in a promised series of mystery novels from the young Welsh based writer, Lee Cambule.

The book quickly hooked me and I wanted to know more. It is well written throughout and has been scrupulously proof-read, something that publishers large and small could do with spending a little more time and money on. Not here though, for I found nary a spelling mistake or typo anywhere in the work. There isn't a single swear word either, and that made a pleasant change and certainly did not effect the immediacy or power of the book.

There are lots of twists and turns and hooks aplenty to keep the reader interested and guessing. The chapters are nicely spaced and keep the reader wanting to turn the page. Included are a couple of nods to J R R Tolkien and I also found it in places reminiscent of Dan Brown's work.

This book will appeal not only to Sci Fi fans, but also to anyone who enjoys a good mystery or thriller and is suitable for teenagers and upward. It leaves many questions unanswered that no doubt will be addressed in the next of the series "abducted The Betrayal".

This is a very promising debut novel and I certainly enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. Mister Cambule can certainly write, but more importantly, he has something to say.

Londonderry turns swords into ploughshares

Dahn Yoga is an art that has been practiced for years and has benefitted its practitioners in tremendous ways. Amongst the many advantages, some of them are; promotes energy flow by clearing blockages, enables one to have emotional stability and increases happiness, improves one's balance, flexibility and coordination, one's concentration levels are increased, leads to a positive build up of pure energy, helps increase metabolic rates thus aiding in curbing one's overall weight, it builds the body's resistance to diseases and promotes wellbeing.

Yoga can be practiced by anyone regardless of their ages and locations. It is the least expensive activity but brings the greatest results and feedback. For beginners there are various yoga postures that do not need a lot of concentration and strain. The first one being the butterfly pose. This one is the recommended posture for the beginning of each yoga session. It serves to increase flexibility in the groin and hip area and it will most likely benefit long distance runners and those of us who have to sit for long periods of time. It is also the recommended yoga posture for meditation. The next posture would be the cat-cow pose. This pose is intended to clear any emotional build up we accumulate in our gut. This may be beneficial as most of us go through emotional traumas that leave us scarred and we never really experience true healing. This asana gets rid of all of it and cleanses our systems.

Next on the list is the cobra pose. This is very common and very easy too. This pose increases the back and spine's suppleness and tones your digestive tract and internal organs. This yoga posture's variations help exercise the ovaries and reproductive organs and improve their functions, not to mention strengthening the upper body which includes the shoulders, arms and neck. Another pose would be the bending asana. This pose has to be the one with the most benefits as simple as it looks. It expands your whole nervous system, improves flexibility and strength in the calves and hamstrings, helps reduce obesity, and rejuvenates most of the internal organs; it also strengthens and increases suppleness of the back. This pose is also said to boost the body's natural healing capabilities, thus lessening the need to take medication with harmful side effects.

There's also the yoga stretch pose. This asana is accomplished by lying on the floor and lifting your neck and legs slightly off the floor. This creates a pull which increases core energy and opens our energy sources. Some will be happy to know that this asana helps develop the much sought after six pack abs. The endurance needed strengthens these muscles which later develop.

Jeff Brendan is a Dahn Yoga student and enthusiast. Always willing to share his experiences and help others by sharing his knowledge. To Find Word of Inspiration about principle of Taoism visit Parkinson's Disease Articles page.

Controlled ball flight is one of the biggest desires of the more advanced player. Whether it's a lower trajectory with control on short irons or an increased trajectory for the long irons. Controlled ball flight is a common denominator to raising the overall level of your game and the Rifle Flighted shaft has been the select choice for many. Let's look at this great technology in more detail.

Rifle Flighted shaft was introduced through an exclusive technology called Flex Distribution Technology. This technology was then perfected on the PGA tour after working with players that use the shaft. PGA Tour players are great for having keen eyes and feel for their shafts and were instrumental in developing the final product. The shaft has become a premier iron shaft on the market.

Rifle Flighted shaft comes from the revolutionary concept introduced by Royal Precision shaft maker in 1998. Each shaft has an exaggerated change in kick point to manipulate a better ball flight based on loft. The longer irons have a lower kick point to promote better launch and higher ball flight and the shorter irons have a higher kick point to promote a lower trajectory with added control. Royal Precision worked this technology to perfection!

Common feedback from players that use the Rifle Flighted shaft is the better balance and more efficient energy transfer they experience. Although much of this feedback is subjective, the Flighted shaft continues to gain in popularity, especially for the better player. If positive feedback is any indication of how good a shaft is, the Flighted shaft is doing extraordinarily well.

Royal Precision Rifle shafts are one of the most played iron shafts on tour. Rifle shafts have recently been played by 10 of the world's top 20 ranked golfers! Rifle introduced flighted shafts after a successful launch on the European Tour. The Rifle Flighted shaft has not looked back since -- players continue to flock to this shaft.

Rifle Flighted shafts remain to be a very popular choice for iron shafts. Most of the loyal Rifle customers is the more educated, advanced golfer. These players understand what a shaft can do for their game and Rifle delivers the goods with their Flighted shaft!

Control your ball flight with the premier iron shaft in the game - Rifle Shafts - see a great selection of Rifle Flighted shafts for optimal ball flight!

Buying brand new textbooks every semester is a familiar experience for most college students. Almost every class requires students to buy at least one textbook, and sometimes multiple new textbooks for multiple classes. New textbooks have also long been a point of frustration for students because they can be very expensive. Many books cost more than $100, which, on a student budget, is a pricey book indeed. Throughout the years, various entrepreneurs (as well as students themselves) have tried a number of different ideas to help alleviate some of this pricing pain, but no single idea has caught hold. Students have setup their own exchange programs, and a few boutique bookstores have...
