What are good but relatively cheap brands for combat/survival and pocket knives??

Before answering this question, I would have to ask this question. Are you going to actually use it for a survival knife under actual survival conditions or do you just want a nifty looking knife to play with. If you are looking for a knife that will be used under actual survival conditions, you have just excluded everything in the "cheap" category. Buy cheap survival gear only if you have a cheap life. If it will be used as a real survival knife, spend the money and get a good knife that will do what you need and will not break just when you need it.

There are many good brands out there. If you buy something from a maker like Cold Steel, Gerber or Buck, you will get a good knife that will withstand the rigors of a survival condition and may save your life. If you waste your money on the cheap crap that just looks good but is poorly made, you have just decided that your life is not worth much. You get what you pay for. Save up the money and get a good knife, you will never be sorry.

Take a look at the knives at www.cabellas.com or www.basspro.com.

Port Richmond residents helping out after Staten Island fire horror

Sanibel Island in southwest Florida is a popular vacation destination, world-famous for its shelling beaches. Just 12 miles long and 3 miles wide, bicycling is a great way to see Sanibel. Bike rentals are readily available and sometimes it seems there are more bicycles than cars, but why not? Paved bike paths cover more than 22 miles the island, with access to restaurants, shops, beaches, fishing, golfing, the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, and more.

To reach Sanibel take I-75 exit 131 (Daniels Parkway) west to Summerlin Rd., turn left to the Sanibel Causeway (one-way $6 toll). Stop at the Visitor's Center for maps, information, restrooms and water. Parking on Sanibel is fee-based, so this is also a good place to park (for free) to start your bike tour. Be aware there is not much shade - bring water, sunscreen, and bug repellent.

Take Causeway Road to Periwinkle Way and cross to the bike path. Going west the path goes through a busy area and bikers should be careful of vehicles. There are shady canopies at 2 miles (Donax Road) with a view of the golf course, and at 3 miles before the Periwinkle Place shopping center (restaurants, shops, restrooms). The path crosses Periwinkle Way and connects to Sanibel-Captiva Road (San-Cap) at Tarpon Bay Road - go straight on Tarpon Bay for a scenic bay view.

The 7-mile San-Cap path is an escape from the commercial area. Within the first mile, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum features an array of shell exhibits. The entrance to the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is another 1.3 miles.

This 6,300 acre Refuge is a birdwatchers' paradise. Wildlife Drive ($1 per person/bike, $5 per car) is open from sunrise to sunset. Access to hiking trails, fishing, and an observation tower; the Education Center has maps, exhibits, restrooms, and water. The 4-mile drive on shells and limestone can be rough for biking. For a smoother alternative, ride the drive about halfway and take the Indigo Trail (2 miles) back to the entrance. The full drive ends on San-Cap Road west of the entrance.

Continuing west on San-Cap, there is a cut-off to Turner Beach, a popular shelling destination. Further along, a short bridge crosses to Captiva Island with its beaches, restaurants, shops, cottages and resorts - but there are no bike paths and bikers need to take care on the narrow roads.

For the return trip, ride about five miles back on San-Cap. This is a long, mostly unshaded stretch; restrooms, water, parking, and a playground are available at the Sanibel Recreation Complex. Swing off San-Cap onto the southern path along Gulf Drive by turning onto the Rabbit Road path - named for the marsh rabbits seen along the path, it runs one mile along a canal where heron and alligators can be seen.

After meeting West Gulf Drive, the path goes past hotels and resorts to Tarpon Bay Road (1.5 miles), where Tarpon Bay Beach offers parking, water, and restrooms. Take Tarpon Bay Road back to Periwinkle, or continue on West Gulf to the intersection of Casa Ybel Road and Algiers Lane (2.2 miles). Casa Ybel leads back to Periwinkle, or continue along Algiers to Middle Gulf Drive. Here the path goes into a wooded area, past the historic cemetery, and links to the beach at Gulfside City Park.

Back on Middle Gulf, the bike path passes beachside hotels and resorts. At Lindgren Blvd., turn north and return to Causeway Road and the visitor center. Or, go straight along East Gulf Drive about one mile to Periwinkle Way and Old Town Sanibel with its cafes and shops. Continue to the Sanibel Lighthouse (1884, the oldest structure on the island), beach, and fishing pier.

End your bike tour by returning along Periwinkle to the causeway and Visitor's center.

Listed among the top Florida bike trails for recreational biking, the Sanibel Island bike trails are featured here, with photos and recommendations on the best sections to ride.

Did I ruin my survival knives?

So here's the story: I own a Spyderco Tenacious and a swiss army knife hiker version. Lately I've tried everything to get them sharp. Stones, rods, (I'm not good at keeping a constant angle, anyway) V sharpener thingies, everything I can think of. At first they got a little sharper, but now they're even duller than they were when I started. Nothing is working at all. So, my question is, through all of this sharpening trial and error, is there some way I could have ruined my knives' cutting angle so bad that they can never be sharp again? If not, is there a fool-proof product you can recommend and/or is there any where I can ship my knives to so they can sharpen them? Thanks.

You're knives shoud still be fine. You could probably send them to any knife company to be resharpeded. I know the Bass Pro Shop near me sharpens knives for free.

Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training. Have you found a job yet?

Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training

Most states are ill equipped to handle the amount of unemployed people in their state. Rhode Island is ready to do another extension of unemployment benefits. What happens when your uneployment benefits run out? Then what! This article may give you the confidence to pull yourself out of this mess if you are unemployed.

If the people who run the RI Department of Labor and Training could think outside the box like me, then most of would be working in the comfort of our own home, and make more money than our unemployment benefits could ever pay us. This would also save the state millions a month in unemployment benefit payouts. What I am about to tell you might make you feel good about your future.

I am an article marketer who works from home. I am not much of a writer but that does not stop me from trying to reach out to help people. I also write articles to make money.  I believe in sharing my knowledge and my two cents, so here it is.

With about 5 hours training you can have the basic skills to become an article marketer.  I write articles and send them to free article websites to be published like Articlesbase.com

I market items that match up with my articles. Mainly digital download goods like ebooks. I also market clothing.

Because of the new Rhode Island Internet Sales Tax Law, our government officials have taken a way millions of money making opportunities marketing tangible goods online as an affiliate marketer.

Many companies like Amazon.com pulled the plug on all their RI affiliates when this internet sales tax law was passed. If you sell digital download goods then not only can you avoid collecting taxes for the state, you also make more money.

You see, when an affiliate marketer sells hard goods through article marketing or any other means, they make a 2% to 15% commission on every sale. But when they sell ebooks and other digital info they make 50% to 75% commission per sale. Ebooks sell like crazy because they can be obtained in minutes by downloading them. These are impulse buys and sell fast. There is an ebook for everything.

The best source to find these ebooks is ClickBank.com. Clickbank.com is the number one resource for ebooks. There is also Affiliatebot.com which is a decent source for hot products to market.

This is what I think the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training should be doing for all unemployed Rhode Island workers. This is the ultimate in worker retraining and it's cheap.

Rather than just paying out unemployment benefits, I think the state should hire some of the best internet marketers and article writers in the country. These individuals would lecture Rhode Island's unemployed about the benefits of internet marketing and how much money that can be made in this industry. They would inspire many of unemployed in this state and maybe bring some hope into these peoples lives.

The State of Rhode Island would then have an army of people trained by these experts "mainly students, the unemployed and volunteers" who would train Rhode Islanders in this industry. You can article market about anything. If the state took 100 people and had them write articles fivr days a week on Rhode Island's great points and the benefits of visiting and living in Rhode Island.  Not only would Rhode Island see an increase in tourism and residents, but Rhode Islanders could become trained in tourism and internet marketing at the same time. These article marketers will be 1099 employees of the State of RI and get bonuses in their unemployent checks for their articles. There are thousands of paid article writers in this country who get paid per article. Usually $3 to $6 per article depending on the size. A 250 word article usually pays $3.

I have a person that writes 30 articles per day 5 days per week for me about Christian Music and I sell Christian musc downloads. I pay her $500 a week and she writes 150 articles a week. You might think that is a lot of money but I make 4k to 6k a month profit on the christian music articles she writes for me. Get the picture!

The Rhode Island article writers would be separated into teams. Each team would be in charge of writing articles about events, businesses and the benefits of living or visiting towns in their area. Because they live in the area, they would be able to write better, more detailed articles about their communities. This would be an online tourism campaign that would benefit every city and town in this state. The state wouldn't know what to do with all the tourists and new residents that these articles would generate.

If you were looking online to vacation in the New England area, and you saw thousands of great little articles written about what a great state Rhode Island is for vacation. Do you think that we would have a better chance of getting them to vacation here in RI instead of another New England State? I do.

With and increase in tourism comes an increase in jobs and tax collections.

With all the great things to do in this state, why do our elected officials choose to finance the state budget with gambling money instead of marketing tourism, tourism, tourism to increase state revenue. After all we are the Ocean State. Who can market Rhode Island better than a Rhode Islander. The state pays millions to promote state tourism with stupid ineffective ads and commercials. Article marketing is 10,000 times more powerful than any TV, Billboard, Print Ad or Radio Commercial. Best of all, it's free and it always remains online for the world to see. Ads and commercials have a very very short life.

Article marketers average $50k to $365k a year.  Your articles live online forever. If you publish hundreds of articles a month, just think how many cash generating articles you will have 4 years down the road. You get my picture? You see the money now? Are you getting an idea about an article yet? Are you ready to take charge of your future?

I pick 7 topics and write articles on them only. After a while I know which ones are making the most cash. I then tweak those cash making articles and produce even more income from them.

How much money is there in article marketing. It is not a great rich quick business. You cannot expect to make 5k a month, writing 30 articles a month. At first you should write articles like your life and future depends on it, after about 3 or 4 months of writing articles 8 to 10 hours a day you could make yourself making between $2000 and $5000 a month or much, much more.

I can write an article in 2 minutes. Yes 2 minutes! I will share with you how I write an article in 2 minutes at a later date when I update this article. So bookmark this article now to catch that update.  How many articles can I publish online in a day? Do the math. If you hit the right topic you can make $1000 a day or more. Do you watch Oprah? You can make a living watching Oprah!

The Oprah Method of Marketing can make you $10k in one day if you can find out who her guest are going to be and what they might talk about. You then write an article titled "Guest on Oprah this week "and rush  it to print online. From there you have all the books that Oprah choose as her favorites right there for sale along side your article. Get the picture? can you see the cash now? Do you have a dollar to spend?

Do you want to learn more about article marketing? Do you want to take a class online to find out what it's all about?  You can sign up for $1 and take the article marketing class at your own pace. It took me 2 hours to take the class.

Don't just go out and write articles without taking the class first. You'll have a fat chance in hell of making any money just writing articles unless you know how. You need to know exactly how to do it. Even if you have been in marketing your whole life, you will be blown away after taking the course.

You can start the class right now if you like. You need a dollar though, it's not free but there is nothing else to buy. Take the Article Marketing Class now at WAU, then come back and leave your feedback so other Rhode Islanders know about your experience.

Prince Edward Island Lighthouses: Light The Way Home

As a coastal community the lighthouses of Prince Edward Island not only served the practical purpose of lighting the way home before the era of GPS navigation, they now offer a unique opportunity to those who visit. Prince Edward Island offers a variety of lighthouse tours ranging from the scenic to the informative.

As most are aware, lighthouses served as a navigational aid for sailors and the ships they captained. Lighthouses are towers that are positioned on sea shores, or even sometimes in harbours. They use a series of lamps and lenses to help guide navigating vessels on the high seas. Lighthouses are used to mark dangerous coastlines, steer ships away from hazards, mark safe entry points into harbours and assist in aerial navigation. With that in mind it is important to note how important lighthouses were to trade and commerce throughout human history.

PEI has a rich history and is the birthplace of confederation in Canada. It also has many historic lighthouses that were used to guide the ships delivering goods to and from Canada. PEI's lighthouses are classified in two ways "First Generation" (built before 1873) and "Second Generation" (those built following 1873). The difference between the two types is that first generation lighthouses have an octagonal shape and were constructed when timber was plentiful in the province. The second generation lighthouses are square shaped as by this point (post 1873) PEI's timber supply had been scarce because of the shipbuilding industry.

Lighthouse technology, although used less in modern times, employs a series of lamps and lenses to project light over large distances. This technology utilizes concentrated light from a single continuous source and magnifies and reflects it so that it can be beamed across open water. The first lighthouses were lit by candles, later by whale oil, then by the 1870's kerosene was typically used.

As an island PEI boasts over 40 historic lighthouses. Surrounded by both scenic red sand beaches and rugged cliffs touring the lighthouses provides wonderful insight into maritime life and well as a rich Canadian history. Since Prince Edward Island is surrounded by water you are never to far from the breathtaking views of the gentle island.

Early summer through late fall of 1946, occasionally photographs were in the New York's daily newspapers of Navy fighter aircraft having to ditch in the water off the south shore of Long Island due to engine trouble. The pilot always escaped unharmed by swimming or wading ashore to small crowds of well-to-do and very sympathetic greeters who owned palatial estates. These empathic observers would treat the dear hero pilot as if he had won WWII single-handedly. They housed the pilot in their home for the weekend, feeding him and providing him clothes. They even hosted parties to honor this hero; then on Monday, furnished him transportation back to Floyd Bennett NAS in a limousine. In...
