The Legacy of the British Raj in India

The British ruled over and administered India for the best part of 100 years.

They started trading with India in the early 1600’s. By the mid 1700’s they were engaged in fighting against various kingdoms. By the mid 1800’s they were fully in control of the Indian subcontinent and were either directly administering through the means of the Indian civil service, or were letting the local Maharajahs administer their own Kingdoms as long as the Maharajahs were paying the British the desired licence fee and were prepared to follow the terms and conditions set out by the British.

In 1947 the British left India partitioned into India and Pakistan as a result of which over one million people died in migration between the two new countries. In addition India was virtually bankrupt with very little infrastructure

or industry. Yet when the British first went to India in the 1600’s it was a very prosperous place with a large GDP and a huge manufacturing base, which is the reason why the British wanted to trade in the first place. The conclusion being that the British left India in a far worse state then how they found it.

Since 1947 India has developed all its infrastructure and industries from ground up, including roads, agriculture, textiles, steel, nuclear, space, military, telecoms and IT and much more. It has made so much progress that some consider it to be a potential global superpower in the very near future, and this has all happened within 60 years of The British leaving India.

So what really was the legacy of the British in India? Many would say that the British went into a prosperous land, bled it dry, and then left. Others would say the British brought culture (education to the heathens), technology and of course the great English language to a country that otherwise would never have experienced all of this.

But one point that often gets missed is that India is now a united country with a democracy and all the relevant institutions needed to sustain democracy, like a judiciary and armed forces. The British had a big hand in this although their motives were all together different. Basically when the British came to India in the 1600’s, it was a fragmented country with many little kingdoms none of whom liked each other. The British took advantage of these differences and slowly gobbled up each kingdom, eventually bringing the sum total of all these kingdoms under British rule. Eventually when the British left they handed over a united India.

It seems that this unification could only have been achieved by an alien power like the British because the Kingdoms hated each other to the extent that they would join the British against each other, yet they would not join each other against the British. This character flaw in the Indian persona is exactly what the British exploited and is also why it would have been very difficult for the Indians to have unified by themselves without some external influence.

India has made great progress over the last 60 years because it is unified. Surely this has to be counted as an important British legac

Why North Americans Hire British Voice Talents

When you think of Britain and the British, images of pomp, chivalry, royalty, tradition, authenticity, and power come to mind. To some, the UK musters romance, dignity and prestige, reminiscent of Jane Austen novels or the strength, bluntness and grit of a book by Charles Dickens. For others, perhaps it's fashion, cosmopolitan airs, trend setting ways, stoicism, and dry wit. Whatever their reasons, thousands of companies in Canada and the US are strategically hiring voices from across the pond to represent their corporate images.

Why is that? Let's look at some of the reasons why some companies find British voice talent more attractive to sell their product or service. British voices are in the mainstream and in most cases are respected for their perceived intelligence and vocal eloquence.

North Americans have always had a love affair with the British. Starting in the early days of settlement in the New World and confederation of both the United States of America and Canada, the British have played a major role in the development of the land and establishment of policy, culture, government and education.

The British, among other nations, principally the French, gave us a heritage and shared connections with trading partners. Tens of thousands of these brave people opted to stay in this new found land to nurture, protect, and establish their own communities.

All loyalties aside, another aspect that influences people to hire a British voice talent is that many high profile celebrities in Hollywood are from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. If you stopped to think, you could likely name at least 20 people who hail from the UK in the movies.

To illustrate, Scotland has given us Russell Waters, Sean Connery, Ewan McGregor, and Dee Hepburn. Ireland has yielded Peter O'Toole, Pierce Brosnan, Liam Neeson, and Colin Farrell. Wales has given us Catherine Zeta-Jones, Ioan Gruffudd, Richard Burton, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Christian Bale. England, perhaps the most generous of them all for celebrities, produced greats over the decades like Sir Laurence Olivier, Dame Julie Andrews, Dame Judi Dench, John Cleese, Helena Bonham-Carter, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and more.

A statistic published on January 27th, 2007 in a British newspaper states that there are currently 678,000 landed immigrants from Britain living in the United States today. This is merely a conservative estimate.

In the most recent US Census (2000), there were 824,000 citizens of British birth living in the United States, the majority of which prefer to live outside of large cities scattered throughout the country.

The article also reported that a fifth of all British people who live in the United States are living in the state of California with only a slight margin living in metropolitan Los Angeles and the surrounding area. Additionally, most British people living in America have American spouses. That's quite a number, which makes even more of a case for British talent in the Americas. People hear their lilting, distinguished accents and find them comforting and pleasing not to mention sophisticated.

Surely if there are that many people living in the US and Canada, some of them are personalities who are in the media or use their voice to make a living. Those individuals are seeking work opportunities and promoting their British voices as an asset and differentiator, offering refinement and exotic appeal.

To sum up, here are the key reasons why people opt to hire British voices in North America:

- Elevate their company status
- Help connect with people on an intellectual level
- Give perceived refinement to a product or service
- Tap into the sentimentality of people of British heritage
- Differentiate themselves from standard North American branding
- Present listeners with subtle yet persuasive marketing

British voice-overs and what they embody are very powerful without seeming salesy. They establish and engage. British voice-overs can be elegant, heroic, strong, graceful, jovial, quaint, condescending, posh, school masterly, didactic, forceful, and influential among other adjectives.

The dialects in Britain are numerous with each nook and cranny possessing their own twist on the Queen's English. If you went from one end of the nations capital to the other, you will be exposed to several completely different dialects; such is life in the bustling city of London.

While it is true that other accents embody those attributes, somehow (likely due to shared heritage and the entertainment industry), the British manage to pull them off with a more universal style, making them citizens of the world as well as the lands from which they came.

UK Folk Rock: Top 10 British Folk Rock Album

During the 1960s, Britain had an active folk rock scene, which was influenced by contemporary American folk rock as well as by traditional British Isles folk music. The influence was rather mutual. While the British folk rock scene absorbed influences from the likes of Bob Dylan and The Byrds, Dylan was hanging out with the Irish traditional band the Clancy Brothers.

Here you can read about the top 10 British folk rock albums in random order. The definition of British folk rock is elusive. Some of the albums listed below are more British folk than British folk rock, while others have nothing British about them, except being recorded by residents of the United Kingdom.

1. Fairport Convention: Liege and Lief

In their fourth album from 1969, the Fairport Convention with Sandy Denny as a lead singer had transformed from a rock band who influenced by folk to the first and most significant British folk rock band in the history. Liege and Lief contains 8 songs, only one of them is original and the others are interpretations on traditional folk music including a medley of British folk classics with a stirring electric guitar adaptation.

2. Shirley Collins and Davy Graham: Folk Roots, New Routes

This 1964 folk album has been a major influence on the British folk rock scene. Folk Roots, New Routes got together two of two unique voices of the British folk: the veteran folk singer Shirley Collins and the acoustic guitarists Davy Graham. Collins unique voice and Graham rhythmic guitar adds unique interpretation to traditional British Isles folk songs. The influences of both Collins and Graham are evident on the most notable representatives of the late 60s early 70s folk rock scene.

3. Bill Fay: Time of the Last Persecution

Bill Fay is one of the most enigmatic figures of the 1970s British folk rock scene. Fays songs are characterized by dark, apocalyptic lyrics background by downbeat melodies. Fay released two albums, Time of the Last Persecution is his second album, and disappeared. Although the lack of commercial success drew his record company to end their relationship shortly after Time of the Last Persecution was released, Fay became a cult figure among musicians. In 2005, Fay had experienced sort of a comeback when Time of the Last Persecution was re released and a re mastered collection of his demos came out.

Nick Drake: Five Leaves Left; Bryter Layter; Pink Moon

Nick Drake was anonymous in his life and his records sold less than 5,000 copies each. Only after his death at the age of 26 from an overdose of anti depression drugs, he had gained recognition and became a popular cult figure. His list of followers is endless and includes musicians and singer songwriters from both sides of the Atlantic.

In short:

  • Richard and Linda Thompson: Shoot out the Lights: former Fairport Convention guitarist and his wife in a bittersweet folk rock masterpiece.
  • Bert Jancsh: Bert Jancsh: debut solo album of one of the British folk rock most notable guitarists
  • Sandy Denny: Sandy: the best solo album of Fairport Convention former lead singer.
