The AGR Training NCO has a vital role is the success of his or her Army National Guard company.

In most units, the Training Sergeant works with the full-time Supply Sergeant and Administration Sergeant and works directly for the Readiness NCO.

The primaries duties of the Training NCO include schools and training. He or she enrolls soldiers in school, ensures they are prepared for training, and follows up with the soldiers as needed. The Training NCO also resources training areas and training equipment for drill weekend and Annual Training.

As a company commander, it's important that you work with your full-time AGR Staff. Most of the time, you will work with the Readiness NCO and let him or her give guidance to the AGR Staff members.

While I was in company command, I formed a good working relationship with all my AGR staff. If you are in command, you need to do the same thing.

One way to build a relationship with your AGR staff is through effective counseling. You should sit down with your entire staff and determine responsibilities and goals.

Each staff member should have a list of priorities. I call these the big 3. These priorities are the most important things they do.

For instance, your Training NCO's priorities might be (1) schools, (2) resourcing training areas and equipment, and (3) assisting the Readiness NCO as needed.

Once they know their priorities, they know how to effectively manage their time.

In summary, your Training NCO has a really important job. And, they will have a major impact on whether or not the company commander is successful.

German captains, U-boats and other lies about Ireland
By chance, I arrived in Dublin this week on the day that the Saville report on Bloody Sunday was published.

The German Shepherd breed is an excellent choice for a canine companion. However, just like many other popular breeds, there are certain health problems that you need to be aware of. Here are a few of the most prevalent German Shepherd dog health issues to look out for:

Developmental bone and joint disease is a problem common to many large dog breeds, affecting the younger animals. If your dog is affected, he may show no symptoms at all, or he may demonstrate pain or lameness, and seem cautious about movement. Hip dysplasia may cause leg muscles to actually waste.

Many German Shepherds also suffer from Hemangiosarcoma, a cancer of the cells of the interior lining of the blood vessels. This condition can affect the skin, heart, liver, and spleen, as well as other organs. If you dog has Hemangiosarcoma, he may display weakness, light-colored gums, a distended abdomen, or even physical collapse.

Another German Shepherd dog health problem is weakness in the hind legs. This can also include wobbliness or a lack of coordination in the affected limbs. Multiple factors can cause this, including bone or spinal degeneration or possibly a slipped disc in the dog's back.

Another problem to look out for is a diseased thyroid gland which will cause either over or under-production of thyroid hormones in some dogs. If your dog is experiencing skin infections, lethargy, hair loss, or cold intolerance it could indicate a thyroid problem.

Keep a keen eye on the eyes of your German Shepherd, especially if you notice apparent squinting, excess tearing or discharge, redness, or rubbing of the eyes. You should also be alert for any growths over the eye, regardless of the color. A condition called Pannus, an inflammation of the dog's cornea, could cause any of these problems and be detrimental to your dog's optical health.

A bacterial infection of the skin, sometimes accompanied by puss, is known as Pyoderma and can be a problem in German Shepherds. It is unknown what causes this condition, but it may be due to an immune deficiency. Your dog may have this if he displays pimples or sores, hair loss, redness or other abnormal skin conditions. Some dogs also become lethargic, or lose their interest in food.

A first step to avoiding these German Shepherd dog health issues is to make sure that your dog does not come from a breeder where other dogs had these issues. Watch your dog carefully, and be sure to consult your Vet if your dog displays any symptoms, or behavior out of the ordinary.

Boots made for walking: After many years, WWII veteran wears them in parade
Tom Morrison’s boots were definitely made for walking. Among the veterans who marched in the town’s annual Memorial Day parade late last month, Morrison wore brown leather, double-buckled boots he received prior to being discharged by the United States Army at the close of World War II.

We dove U-1105 today! 08/06/06

We just got back from this dive today. I live in Tappahannock, VA so this was almost a local dive for me.

We drove over to a Dennis' river house at (near Coles Point, Virginia) he took his boat out to site. We were supposed to meet another guy at the site who had experience diving this sub. We had no problem finding the site and mooring to the mooring buoy (Blue and White and clearly labeled). We were there at 11:30am in time to dive at the recommended High, Slack Tide. Our contact never showed?

Conditions were PERFECT. Very smooth water, warm, clear day. It hadn't rained in days. There was no appreciable surface current! There were 3 of us (John, myself and Dennis). We wanted to leave someone on the surface so John and I made 1st dive. Visibility was a bit better that I had psyched myself up for (maybe 8 feet?)

We all had HID lights (I would NOT make this dive without HID). Our prep experience was several trips to Cooper River, SC doing shark tooth dives. We were as comfortable as to be expected with zero viz diving.

We surface swam over to small orange ball that was ascent/descent line connected to the Conning tower. You are NOT to moor to this line! Be mindful of jelly fish and fishing lures around the down line (We all wore full wetsuits - I wore 7/5 mm hood and gloves) Water temp was very comfortable 79 degrees F.

As I reached 60 feet I still could not see any signs of wreck. It was only at 66 feet before I saw Stainless Steel base that down line was tied off to. We were amazed by the surviving wooden slates lining inside of Conning tower area. This has been submerged for some 57 years! As this was our 1st time here, we stayed pretty near conning tower and didn't venture too far fore and aft but did descend to 79 feet to get a look at the HEAVY silt! It brought a new full appreciation of how bad silt could be! I did manage to locate the missing OMS Wreck Reel we were told about and recovered it. The owner promised to buy drinks for whoever recovered it?

We ascended and after almost an hour Surface Interval then Dennis and I made the next dive leaving John to mind the boat. Again we saw Jelly fish on descent line and managed to stay clear of them. We again circled the conning tower but didn't go far forward or aft but it seemed most of the actual deck disappeared into the silt quickly.

All in all it was not near as difficult as much of the available literature made it out to be BUT it is a very poor viz dive and you can not bring too much light! We did have GREAT Conditions and I imagine it doesn't get much better.

I am sure that it would be far more difficult if current was stronger!

I wouldn't want to do that type diving every day (we just got back from a week and 24 dives in Bonaire!) but it was a great day trip!

If you have any Questions about the U-1105 [http://www.nnscuba.com] feel free to email me!

U.S. Government's FCPA Probe of Weatherford Expands
The federal government's probe into Weatherford International's dealings in foreign countries has burgeoned far beyond a simple bribe inquiry. It has become a multi-agency civil and criminal investigation into allegations that Weatherford, one of the world's largest oilfield service companies, did business with terrorist-friendly countries that are under U.S. trade sanctions.

Who inspires your team?

Who develops the ideas, promotes an environment that fosters creative camaraderie, nourishes espirit de corps - and steers the organization toward greatness?

In short, who is your Chief Innovation Officer?

Every organization that grows by creating new products or services or aspires to out-class the competition needs a Chief Innovation Officer, or CIO.

In Robert's Rules of Innovation, "Inspiration" is the first and most important of the 10 imperatives. Inspiration drives everything else - from ideation to new product development to risk-taking itself.

Yet the selection of the CIO, and the definition of his or her tasks in seeing that these challenges are skillfully mastered, can make the difference between innovative success and failure.

What does the CIO do? He or she...

1. Shows support from the top. Ideally, this position is held by the organization's chief executive or president - someone who leads by example and "walks the talk." Alternatively, and in a larger organization, he or she may be a "Crown Prince" - someone hand-picked by the executive leadership to oversee the task of inspiring greatness from within the team. It's important that if the CIO is not the CEO or president, that he or she has the blessing of the senior executive. Otherwise, his or her ideas, inspirations or suggestions might be rebuffed.

2. Communicates Overarching Goals and Progress. The imperative should be to overcommunicate and under-promise. Such communication keeps the organization focused on the vision, successes and failures.

3. Builds a "Communication Corridor." This practice of two-way traffic enables ideas to flow freely for equal consideration and sharing throughout a trusting enterprise. The open-door policy gives every participant a voice and motivation to say what needs to be said - even if they believe the project at hand is a losing proposition. Fear of retribution should never discourage people from speaking their minds.

4. Connects the Silos. Better yet, he or she demolishes them. Knock down the barriers that keep silos apart by creating cross-functional teams.

5. Commissions Cross-Group Stakeholders. These "champions across projects" should have the authority and budgets to test, learn and lead multiple groups through the process and assure ownership across groups is achieved. Bullies need not apply. These champions should encourage buy-in so innovation isn't stymied or blocked.

This isn't just for Fortune 500 corporations. Smaller organizations have more to gain from installing a CIO. This helps send the message that the position - and the commitment behind it - are vital to the organization's long-term growth.

Whatever the size of the organization, inspiration is only valid if it's derived from the vision, mission or strategy of the company - and driven by an executive empowered to see it through.
