The amount of sound and fury expended on Ballistic Missile defense Shields is sometimes mind boggling. And there are Think Tank academics who have spent entire careers just studying who said what, who did what, and estimating what could happen while determining what it all means. Not long ago, I was discussing the Ballistic Missile Defense Shield plans and the Russian anxiety over the whole issue with Jesse Giraldo, a scholar of Russian-US post cold war relations.

Jesse explained to me that; In the end though the U.S got the support it needed from Poland and other collaborators and the defense system was set up. This is obviously a very frustrating position for Russian officials to be in as they have very little power in stopping such agreements from taking place.

The reason being simply that at the end of the day Russia cannot force other countries not employ these defensive capabilities, especially in light of the fact that such contracts usually benefit both parties involved. If Poland wants to establish a nuclear deterrent system on its borders and the United States is willing to provide the equipment there is very little Russia can do to get in the way of negotiations. I do believe though that the United States downplaying of Russian anxiety toward such activities is a very calculated approach designed to paint Russia as "overly paranoid".

Jesse's comments make sense, and the obvious retort to Russian angst might be; "if you aren't planning on attack, why do you care, and if you were planning that, is that why you are upset?" Of course, Russia says; "how do we know these defense systems and launchers will not be used in the future as offensive weapons?" Which is an interesting comment, because no one in their right mind would go and attack Russia without cause.

Now then, do we now find a similar tone with regards to Taiwan and Mainland China, Beijing is utterly upset over the US sale of missile defense tech, and the F-16 deal coming forth. And yet, if China is not considering a play for re-unification by force, why would they care. But the reality is that China could more easily be rebuffed in a political maneuver; "re-unite or face the consequences" in the future. I guess the reality is that every nation has the right to defend itself - it's when they build offensive, first strike weapons that everyone gets bent out of shape, or when those with offensive weapons find their potential future targets with robust defensive weapon systems.

Like Iran and their anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia and future potential purchases. In a way this forces the hand of the offensive force to either act, or find alternative means to political impasse? Jesse adds one last comment of interest; "Basically, which is why when weapons deals take place everyone takes notice. No one wants to lose the advantage against a potentially dangerous future enemy."

Golf Grip Advice for Longer, Straighter and More Consistent Golf ShotsHow you grip the club has a huge affect on the golf shots you hit. But don't let anyone tell you that there is one golf grip that everyone should use, because that is simply not true. You've just got to look at professional golfers to see this. For example, Ben Hogan used a weak grip to help combat a hook problem. Nick Faldo uses a neutral grip. Then John Daly uses a strong golf grip.
