First aid is the provision of initial care for a sick or injured person . It is most of the time performed by a non-expert human being to a sick or injured human being until definitive medical handling can be taken over by a more experience medically trained professional. Certain self-limiting illnesses or small injuries may not require further medical care past the first aid intervention. It generally consists of a series of easy and in some cases, very life-saving skills that an individual could be certified to perform with minimal products .

Preserving life

In order to stay alive, all human beings need to have an open airway - a clear passage where air can move in through the mouth or nose through the pharynx and down in to the lungs, without obstruction. Conscious humans will maintain their own airway automatically, but those who are unconscious may be not able to maintain a clear airway, as the part of the brain which automatically controls breathing in normal situations may not be functioning.

If the person was breathing, a first aider would ordinarily then place them in the recovery position, with the patient leant over on their side, which also has the solution of clearing the tongue from the pharynx. It also avoids a common cause of death in unconscious person , which is choking on regurgitated stomach contents.

The airway can also become clogged through a foreign object becoming lodged in the pharynx or larynx. And cause them to choke. The first aid responder will be instructed to deal with this through a series of ‘back slaps' and ‘abdominal thrusts'.

Once the airway has been cleared , the first aid CPR responder would assess to see if the patient is breathing. If there is no breathing , or the person is not breathing normally , the first aid responder should undertake what is more than likely the most recognized first aid CPR process - Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR, which involves breathing for the person , and manually massaging the heart to promote blood flow through the body.

Promoting recovery

The first responder is also trained in dealing with minor injuries such as cuts, grazes or broken bone(s) . They may be able to help with the situation as a whole with such injuries as a small adhesive patch on a paper cut, or may be required to maintain the condition of something like a bone fracture , until the trained and certified medical professional comes on site .
