Classy on and off the field
When many people purchase a new tablesaw one of the first thing they do is look at the riving knife, think to themselves, "what is this thing" ad then throw it in a drawer or in the trash. Well I'm here to tell you what that thing is and why you should use it.
The purpose of a riving knife is to make a tablesaw safer. Riving knives prevent kickback which can be extremely dangerous. Kickback occurs when the workpiece makes contact with the back teeth of the saw blade. The workpiece can be fired into the operators body or worse, pull a hand or other body part into the blade causing serious injury or death.
When used correctly a tablesaw is a very safe machine but getting distracted for just a second can cost you dearly for the rest of your life. In 2001 an estimated 38,000 carpenters went to emergency rooms from tablesaw related accidents. These accidents are less likely to happen when proper care is taken to ensure a safe working environment. And in many cases making good use of a riving knife will help to increase the level of safety.
There are different riving knives for different jobs. Many newer tablesaws are outfitted with interchangeable riving-knife systems both high- and low-profile, that are better at protecting you from kickback than the older ones. The high-profile system (the safer but less versatile of the two) helps protect against both kickback and hand-to-blade contact. At times when the high-profile knife can't be used, the low-profile riving knife can be substituted such as slotting cuts when the blade does not go through the board and when using a tenoning jig. A low profile knife will stay below the top of the blade and allow these types of cuts to be made.
Any handyman should know what a riving knife is and how and when to use one. Hopefully this article will help to save a finger or more.
