Indisputably one of the key figures in American literature, Mark Twain trivia should be of interest to anyone who is studying American fiction in any form. The most obvious piece of information about Twain is widely known, although several have still not yet heard it. That is that Mark Twain was in fact as pseudonym, and that the writer of such legendary books as "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" was in fact born as Samuel Langhorne Clemens.
Clemons was born in Missouri, and although he was originally born in the town of Florida, it would be a later home, Hannibal, that would have the largest impact on him. Some people have contended that Mark Twain could be considered one of the fathers of science fiction, although his name is hardly mentioned in connection with the genre in the manner of HG Wells or Jules Verne. However, his story, "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" is routinely held up as an early example of science fiction.
Mark Twain's life was marked on both ends by a very unusual coincidence that might appear on a Mark Twain quiz. He was born within a short period of the closest passage to Earth of Haley's Comet. Near the end of his life, he was getting depressed, especially after the death of much of his family. He stated that he fully expected to die with the passing of Haley's Comet, and his prediction was entirely correct. He passed within a day of the comet's passage.
Mark Twain wrote to entertain, to inform, and to critique. He had strong political views which often appeared, although never in an overly intrusive manner, in many of his fictional writings. One of his strongest held views was that racism was an evil that had to be crushed, and he was extremely opposed to slavery. A quote of Twain's sums up his views on the issue - "Lincoln's Proclamation... not only set the black slaves free, but set the white man free also."
