Fighting Squadron One: Squier recalls service in WWII
Story created Jun 15, 2010 - 12:19:38 CDT. It was December 1941 and Lawrence Squier had left Osage in a 1931 Chevy and $23 in his pocket. He and his friends Marvin McGill of Osage and "Peg" Balsley from Orchard (who had one leg shorter than the other) were on their way to Pasadena, California.

Since the launch of the Kodak PlaySport early this year, a little shadow was be cast on the very popular Flip HD camcorder. It has been a long time since the Flip had such a serious competitor. If you have ever had the chance to use Kodak's PlaySport model, it is easy to see why.

For starters, it seems to be everything the Flip is and much more. The Kodak model is a waterproof model where it can be used underwater for up to 10 feet in depths. This feature alone will win over a lot of outdoor activity fans. This is the perfect camcorder to bring around with you if you are planning to indulge in some rugged and wet activity without worrying about it.

The Kodak PlaySport can record HD videos at 1080p but we have got the best and most consistent results recording at 720p. Although this by no means could compare to a full-fledged HD camcorder (at the moment, no pocket camcorder can), it does record pretty decent HD videos, especially for its size and price.

It also snaps HD still shots at 5 mega-pixels (16:9 ratio). The quality of the still shots under good lighting conditions was pretty impressive. We also got to test the PlaySport for underwater shots. It managed to capture good details and decent audio during our tests. The underwater footage was again, surprisingly satisfying.

This new model has a more sporty design. It comes in blue, black and purple. The controls are well laid out and generally, quite user friendly. The built-in software that comes with this camcorder in compatible with both Mac and Windows based computers. All in all, the Kodak PlaySport HD has proven to be an irresistible package. It does a competent job at recording both still and video HD shots. For just around $150, you get a stylish, compact and waterproof HD camcorder/digital camera. What more could you ask for?

Germany, the Worlds and the Wars  The Treaty of Versailles The Treaty of Versailles, signed on 28 June, 1919 at the Paris Peace Conference is one of the internationally acclaimed documents that not only came into being at a crucial point in the history of troubled Europe and of the world, but serves as a point of reference to the turnout of the events after the World War I. The document addressed measures against Germany for its prominent role in the WWI; it contained reparations that Germany was to pay to the victorious countries that fought on the side of the Allied Powers and enforced Germany to accept the blame as the sole cause of the war. The conference itself opened...

Not all fencers are equally talented, technically or tactically. If they were, running competitions would be absurdly easy. Any fencer could be assigned to any pool or to any position on an elimination table, and the organizers could still be assured of the fencer winning who was best of the identical athletes. But reality does not work that way. As a result, there has to be some method of dividing fencers so that the outcome reflects the skill level present - enter seeding. The objective of seeding is that the bouts result in the best fencer winning the competition, the better fencers surviving further into the competition (the rounds of 16, 8, and 4 of an elimination table), and...

Frank Thomas, Ted Williams, and the Adjusted 500 Home Run Club In a recent column, I set out to provide an  Adjusted 400 Home Run Club , with alterations made based on era, missed time, and favorable vs. non-favorable home ballparks. Humorously, this simply raised more questions about the 500 Home Run Club than it did answer questions about the 400 Home Run Club. So, maybe we should adjusted that club as well. (Eek, eek. Twitch, twitch.) Are we about to ... Thank God for Sandra Lee! I finally learned how to cook at the age of 45, thanks to Sandra Lee (better late than never). Not only is she a great cook, she's also talented and beautiful. It hasn't been an easy road for her. Before...

Hawaii avoids elimination at LLWS SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Hawaii is still alive at the Little League World Series after a 7-4 win last night over Columbus, Ga.
