The beauty of spike lights is that they are flexible, being completely moveable. Put a spike light in, if after consideration you decide it's in the wrong place, simply move it and put it somewhere else.
Illuminating your garden paths and walkways is more compulsory than optional; it's your responsibility to ensure that anybody walking in the garden is made aware of hazards. Placing spike lights along the side of a path, pond, or other feature will illuminate potential hazards, keeping everybody safe.
However, as well as being functional, hazard lighting can also look very beautiful, especially if you choose LED spike lights which come in a whole rainbow of colours. Spike lights are particularly good where paths are narrow, they take up far less space than some other forms of garden lighting and, if necessary, you can place the spike light just on one side of the path, perhaps alternating sides for the length of it.
One idea for using lights decoratively is to arrange them around the base of trees and shrubs, directing the light upwards, which is, by the way, known as up lighting; the effects can be stunning and are well within the capabilities of even the simplest spike lights The thing to do is get out there and play! With spike lights there's no problem if your first attempts are rubbish, just move them and try again.
